Fantastic. We'll work on that for beta 2... obviously it should not present an error.

"Quotes" - print out in review title as "Quotes"

The review title is made up from the product title... Where are you seeing the quotes show up like this? In the body of the review or in the headline elsewhere?

It's the big link on the edit product page... you must have an item created first.

In our beta 2 release we spell this out on the add product page as well.

Alternatively you can keep using image links and then run the bulk importer [also in beta 2] which will move them over for you.

Found .... But if I click on

Upload a new product photo?

are this error:

Not Found

The requested URL /admincp/productforums was not found on this server.

but in the Image Upload Path and Image View Url the cart are images/productforums and not

admincp/productforums...

why?

Thanks

Well then you'll like our solve... Rather than skipping the setting and overriding it we've added prefixes in. So you can create something like positive / negative / great / bad, etc for your review thread forum. If you want it...

Thanks

It's a link bug we posted about earlier today... When beta 2 comes in a few minutes out just upgrade and you'll be good to go.

1.3.0 beta 2 is out with a few changes...

1. Added a bulk image importer. Now you can convert your existing image urls into local photos w/ thumbnails... No local saving or old product updating needed!

2. Added support for forum prefixes to label reviews. If enabled these will be considered required.

3. Fixed a bug with a link to the image uploader script.

Plus a larger note about images when you add a product, making that harder to miss :D

Changed files: /forum/productforums.php, /admincp/productforums.php /includes/xml and the template prodforums_review_create

Hi Ted,
B2 is a fantastic update, I have a question, probably just me being stupid!

With existing Products, suppose they have external images for the main image such as:
http://photobucket.com/blah/blah/DrPlumbQuintexBentAppleSmoothLondonMadeMagicInchBr iarPipe.jpg

What do we do to ensure they have the thumbnail and tiny image, currently nothing has changed on localhost for existing Products, those images are still missing.

The script debugs for valid images a bit but it looks like something is sneaking through or perhaps just not playing nicely... What version of php / gd are you using?

Debugging this will require a few changes. Please try this version of admincp/productforums.php and includes/prodforums_uploader.php

This will print out some debug information and exit the script before trying to process any images.

Just run the bulk script. It will try to load the remote image, reprocess it into the 3 image sizes and update the database if successful.

The nice thing is that you can use this moving forward so rather than uploading files individually you just include the url, hit sync and it grabs them for you.

Don't work doesn't give me much to go off of... Let's dive deeper...

Did it error on you? If so, which script? If not, Did it output messages?

It's not suppose to convert anything... in fact it will stop before trying. It's a debug script and should produce something like:

photoid is: 500126c9ad6d2
filename is: /var/www/forum/prodphotos/500126c9ad6d2
download is: http://www.xxx.com/Image/Product/Full/APLFPCO.jpg
should now have: /var/www/forum/prodphotos/500126c9ad6d2_original.unknown
file name is: /var/www/forum/prodphotos/500126c9ad6d2_original.unknown
skipping the delete
exiting

And since I'm not an admin for your forum I can't see your php info. You'll need to find the versions for PHP and GD and report them back [phpinfo should never be openly shared]

As noted in the documents, this is not upload and go, you must configure certain options to use all the features of this mod.

Please review the install guide and your product forum settings in your Admin Control Panel -- in this case the new product forum is what's missing but there are likely others you will need to adjust.

That depends. What's the problem?

From your last post you had uploaded files to the wrong folder and from your previous one it's not clear if you have a setting issue, a software issue or a script issue. You'll need to run the debugger script provided for us to sort that out.

The error you were getting was in the search function... Clicking the stars won't rate anything if that's what you intended [for that you have to click "Write a Review" and fill out the form].

Unless I'm misunderstanding you?

Your server needs curl to run this function [curl lets us fetch the images from their remote source quickly and without worrying about limited php settings].

It's a good point... No one has brought it up to date but that doesn't mean users get it...

You can of course remove the link by editing the template. Since reviews generally need detail a click alone doesn't seam to be enough but we're open to thoughts.

I enable curl in localhost xampp and ran that script, now there are NO images for the Products already listed, the add image from an url is gone too, all I have open to me now is to upload a new image!

This is no good at all for when upgrading my live site, why are the external linked images deleted?

This is no good at all for when upgrading my live site, why are the external linked images deleted?

When a local image is made, the old link is replaced... One product, one image path.

Essentially the script just sees an image field. Whether it's internal or external is irrelevant to a browser or the script and thus calling one field avoids having to check two places for images. Speed is good.

That said, in the syncing process there's a number of sanity checks in place so if an image doesn't load, isn't a valid type, etc it gets skipped over and the external link remains in place. The process runs one image through at a time to avoid any issues with something breaking mid-way and reloads after 25 images to avoid browser timeouts.

But critical errors can always throw curve balls so for beta 3 we're adding a field to store the old link. Just in case.

When you re-ran the script did it say there was nothing to process? Are all of the products now showing local paths?

You can query: SELECT productid, mainphoto, uploadimg FROM pf_products

Ted S
07-14-2012, 08:52 AM
The add image from an url is gone too, all I have open to me now is to upload a new image!

Once you use the uploader on a product we assume you're uploading images [for that product] and hide the fields from view to keep the edit field less cluttered.

I'm not sure why you'd want to go from an uploaded image to an external url rather than another upload but you can reset it by changing the uploadimg flag to 0.

Hiya Ted,
doesn't matter what I change the "Image View Url" to in the core settings, when I check the view in Products listing page all I see is this text where the thumbnail should be:
product photo for Peterson System Smooth 317 Small Briar
139808
When I use firebug to check the image location I see this:
/productphotos/50014e732fa54_thumb.jpg
and a message saying "failed to load the given url"

In the core settings I have set the Image View Url to '/productphotos' but still cannot see any images anywhere.

I have the images in "C:\xampp\htdocs\vb4dev\productphotos"

Any ideas what I am doing wrong here TEd, it's all getting to be a bit of a headache now!

So /productphotos/ is the folder images are set to go to... but when you open it are the images there? If so, do they load properly?

If not, try changing one or two products to an external url [via your database or adding a new item], run the sync script again and see how those look.

You can run this version of admincp/productforums.php which will print debug code if you're not sure on the paths

Kirk Fitzgerald

Hi Ted, the images are present in the /productphotos/ folder but are not loading, I tried adding two new products on my test environment, nothing changed.

I uploaded the new admincp/productforums.php you posted but don't know how to get the debug stuff to show, I turn on debugging but have no idea how make it show!

I think it is going to be simpler for me to delete my existing install on my live site and re-install with 1.3 when it's stable and start afresh. I don't want my site to be running a patched up version of your brilliant mod, I should like it to be functioning fully and properly. :)

In a controlled environment beta means "this mostly works, we're testing to fix the rest" but in mass software beta is more akin to "this works every way we've tested, now we need to see what happens when you try it under other settings". Simply put there is no way for us to account for all of the possible variations, setting, servers that exist out there so while it's painful to watch "issues" come in, it's how mods work.

And, given how vBulletin runs mods, upgraded or new, you get the exact same build structure.

..........

At this point there are no known issues with 1.3.0 beta including the image sync routine -- so obviously we'd like to understand what's happening to your site and if there is indeed an issue in the script before we roll this code to "stable".

So, if you're up for it, let's think through this...

Correct me if I'm wrong but images (3 versions per product) do exist in /productphotos/.
When you view one locally it loads and looks like, well, a product image
But when you load it from the page it does not.Does that sum up the issue you are experiencing?

The debug script I provided only runs when you run the image sync process on new images. It's completely unrelated to the admin setting.

Kirk Fitzgerald
07-14-2012, 10:33 PM

should now have: C:\xampp\htdocs\vb4dev\productphotos/5001fd68874b3_original.unknown

I just added a new product and used an external image link, then I ran the sync external images, at the end of sync I see this text:

I think I see what's happening here...

Your test forum is hosted on a windows server which has backwards urls (productphotos\ instead of productphotos/)...

It's strange that nothing errors in creating the images but perhaps windows is smarter in processing than it is in rendering...

To this this run the mySQL query:

update pf_product set mainphoto = replace(mainphoto, '/', '\\');
update pf_product set mainphoto_thumb = replace(mainphoto_thumb, '/', '\\');
update pf_product set mainphoto_small = replace(mainphoto_small, '/', '\\');

Then check that C:\xampp\htdocs\vb4dev\productphotos\5001fd68874b3 .jpg [png|gif] opens properly.

Note: This will update all images, including those with external links.

Once you synced the images the first time wasn't this already the case? The same paths are used on the frontend and backend.

View a product [in the front or backend] and open the page source. Copy down the image src path and try loading it on your server... it should be \productforums\xxxxx.image which should correspond to where the image is saved.

I can't see your server configuration to know how your folders, slashes and file types are set so it's hard to tell what part of your links are broken but from everything you've posted there doesnt seem to be an issue in how the script works but rather in the configuration versus where images actually are.

sorry about delay, had to sleep. :)

http://localhost/vb4dev/%5C%5Ci1049.photobucket.com%5Calbums%5Cs386%5CKirk Fitzgerald%5CPetersonCeramic3PipeStandPipeRack.jpg I can send you the main Apache config file httpd.conf is that helps to know how xampp is configured on my end, do you want me to do that?

I'm so confused here... didn't you process the images through the bulk sync script turning them into local links like /productforums/xxxxxx.img?

The reason external links won't work is the query I had you run which changes / to \ to work specifically for local links. If you want to use remote images instead that's no problem, we can fix the links to point back to those...

This has got to be one of the most valuable and best mods ever. You guys have worked HARD on this. I will wait until the beta graduates before upgrading to the latest to go live with but I am watching this thread very closely! I think tens of thousands of my forum participants are going to use this once I turn it on.

Thanks!

Hi Ted,
yes, I did sync the images and I did run the query, the result you are seeing in my last post is the result of adding a product from the front end where members would be submitting Products. I changed nothing after running the query other than submitting a new Product on the front end to see what happened, and the results I posted was what happened.

Perhaps this is a problem specifically with using Xampp on localhost, I don't know, windows is notorious for being riddled with bugs, we may be looking at a conflict that windows is to blame for. I don't know what else to tell you Ted, the process I went through has been laid out as acted upon, I have absolutely no idea why the results are as they are.

I could shut down my real site for an hour or so, back up everything and run the upgrade there for the Beta and see what happens!

Ted,
I used your "old" mod which worked fine for me and love it.
I just updated to your newest version and a little confused/lost.

Now all the new reviews I post need approval/moderation. I can't figure out anymore how to turn this off as I don't want to approve them.

Also when adding a new review the image uploader doesn't show up on the page.
What could be the issue?

Thanks for any help or suggestions
Michael

The moderation process didn't change but it is an admin option in the general settings [Screen New Reviews?]. Also be sure that your forum settings don't place posts into moderation either.

Also when adding a new review the image uploader doesn't show up on the page. What could be the issue?Reviews don't get images.... Products do and only as an admin.

Well if you added an external url image and then ran my query which was designed to handle internal urls of course it broke. Like I said when I posted it, it will impact every url.

Can you do the same source comparison on an image that was actually up and moved locally?

Ah, okay, sure, here is one that was already there, the source shows this:

Now we're on the right track...

So \productphotos\5001db3eda3fd_full.jpg

1. If you type this path into windows [C:\server\...\productphotos\] does it work?

2. When you open the file 5001db3eda3fd_full.jpg from that folder in windows, does it show anything?

3. Looking at another image on your pages that does work, what's the path?

Just a quick heads up for you all that our team will be at an offsite much of this week with limited access. We will of course still try to provide the fastest support we can and, given that all signs for the beta point up, we hope to launch the stable version of 1.3.0 the following week!

I think I explained the issue some topics back and I was not the only one affected by this, just look some pages back. You said it would be fixed in a future release, not sure if this beta is the next release.

I always get the message that the description does not contain the minimum length to send the review.

The full change log mentioned customization, and this is the feature that's keeping us from implementing the product on our big board.

Unfortunately this forum does not have a method for tracking issues thus once something is pages back remembering who specifically asked about it is about impossible. Thus it's much easier to include the topic than for us to go finding it..

That said, we have addressed this as explained in the change log. Of course we'll leave it to you to confirm if it works properly with your forum settings.

Yes, you can add multiple rating attributes to products using a 5-star, yes/no or free-form attribute. The option is global [all ratings for all products] and will be for the time being.

Take a look at the screenshots or try the beta and let us know if this cuts it.

We can fix this with a simple query...

update pf_product set mainphoto = replace(mainphoto, '\\productphotos\\', 'productphotos/');
update pf_product set mainphoto_thumb = replace(mainphoto_thumb, '\\productphotos\\', 'productphotos/');
update pf_product set mainphoto_small = replace(mainphoto_small, '\\productphotos\\', 'productphotos/');

Or something along those lines depending on your current image paths.

[Note: to replace \ you must escape it with another \ thus \\]

Ted S

With the release of 1.3.1 stable we wanted to provide a quick recap on how to upgrade. While the process is straight forward and quick, the new image uploading and other features do make it important to go through a few extra steps so please read on and ask if you have any questions:

1. Start with a backup of your forum for this or any other mod you install.

2. Download the latest version of PRF and upload the contents of the upload folder to your forum directory

3. From your AdminCP update the Product Forums plugin package to the included file

4. Review the main addon settings paying special attention to the new upload and image paths if you wish to use the image uploading features

5. Run the image sync script to convert existing images from external links to local images [requires cURL and GD]

6. Post your comments / suggestions whether they're good, bad or indifferent back here for us, and everyone else in the community

This is a major update and as such you'll see changes throughout the templates and phrases. As always we encourage you to make the mod your starting place and customize beyond it with the options and your own adjustments.

For those who wish to use the image uploader & sync script you will need to have cURL and GD installed on your server and be able to create a writeable folder for images to be saved in. Images can be processed either one at a time by editing an existing product or in bulk by using the sync images link which will fetch all external images and resize, localize and update them [credit too Simon Jarvis (http://www.white-hat-web-design.co.uk/articles/php-image-resizing.php)].

Wondering what's new? Here's the main changes [yes, there's a lot of them]
Customizable rating options... yes/no, 5-star and text freeform
Product images. You upload, we resize [gd required]
Bulk image importing from external links [curl & gd required]
Thumbnails all over... the product index, even forum display
Activity Stream updates when a review is posted
Support for user-selected thread prefixes
Automatic add product links for the user
Improvements to product management for speedier changes
Cleaned up product adding interfaces for admin use
Lots of small tweaks, bug fixes and other changesSee the full change log @ http://www.giftery.me/productforums/changelog

They don't. For a variety of reasons we opted not to build this into 1.3, or at least not uploads. Of course end users can specify a link for an image which, if you run the sync script, will get converted in.

Little addition for anyone wanting it in the forumdisplay for your products, to add the +add new product button to be at the top of the thread listing as well as the bottom, do the following:

Open FORUMDISPLAY

FIND:

BELOW ADD:
<vb:if condition="$show['newproduct']">
<a href="{vb:raw $vboptions.vbforum_url}{vb:if "$vboptions['vbforum_url']", '/', ''}productforums.php?do=addproduct" rel="nofollow" class="newcontent_textcontrol" id="newthreadlink_top"><span>+</span> {vb:rawphrase post_newproduct}</a>

Perhaps something you could add in future release Ted, not essential as easy enough to hack. :)

just updated to the latest version and all seem to work great but I have an issue with the images.
I added the URL from an external image by using the option "add new product" on the site itself.
When I sync then the pics in my admin CP I get the following message:

All Done!

When I look in the created thread the pic is there however looking into the general overview page the thumbnail is not there. Just a question mark.
I looked into my server and the thumbnail was created in the correct folder. Also when I looked into the link where the question mark is it points to the correct image and folder on my server.

You add fields through your AdminCP. Expand the first PRF option group on the navbar.

When you install a vBulletin mod it adds version 1, 2, 3, etc... to account for upgrades so it really makes no difference.

1.3+ gives admin photo uploading and resyncing user submitted images.

You add fields through your AdminCP. Expand the first PRF option group on the navbar.

Sorry for being a pain. I'm running 1.3.0 beta 2.

I'm guessing you're talking about adding fields in the Custom Ratings Field? When I do that, nothing shows up.

** edit - I just upgraded to 1.3.1 but still can't get the extra options to show up. Thanks.

Hi Ted,
found a bug, when searching for products in the admincp, when I select a specific category (Pipes) I get a page saying 151 results and the first 10 results, when i click next page the search result returns 'all' 366 products not just the remainder of the 151 from Pipes that I searched for.

Sorry if my explanation was a little complicated to follow.
I went through all the steps again and I found the issue. I had something wrong in my URL settings for the image folder.

Really sorry I have wasted your time to follow up on this while it was my mistake. Feel so stupid right now.

No problem!

Now it works, really nice component ...

you can upload images to the users?

End users can not upload images. They can however add a url for an image which the admin can either upload or import via the image sync script.

my first install was the 1.3.0 beta 2 and then I upgraded to the 1.3.1 and it all looks the same.

As for usergroup permissions, I only have it set for the administrators right now to be able to add products. If it's something different you're asking then I'm not sure.

There's no built in support for that.

You could of course add a database field, query element and for field. [and I'm pretty sure all major gun brands use SKUs to identify products].

Given the way this mod works it would be a pain, although certainly possible, to port it down to 3.8. For reasons that aren't worth diving too far into we've elected to move to 4.x only but would certainly support anyone's desire to build out a ported version.

Ted,
Nice mod first off. I wanted to ask where you have the photos is it possible to embed a video in place of that image? The reason I ask is I want to use this mod as a way to review our communities live stream broadcasts. Each person has their own embed code which I think would work well if it were embeded in the photo area. Let me know what you think and if this is possible.

Sure...

Basically you'd ignore the thumbnail image fields and rename the input for the main image to video url then change the detail template to call that as an embed link. The script checks that field for a valid url so you'd either have to change that to allow HTML or just use a youtube style link [or such].

Basically you're looking at template edits with the possibility of one or two small code changes depending on where videos are stored.

upgraded to latest. i just disabled require prefix to post and it works. though cant add a prefix to reivew or product. can select a category but I'd have to make new categories to match the prefixes already established. categories are useless to me as I am unable to use them to sort through a mass of products or reviews. whereas I can with the clickable prefixes mod

also i create product and it posts to forumid 88 as an inactive product. when i activate it via the admincp it disappears...now is in forumid 45
create a review and it posts to forumid 45

but when I activate the product it posts to the review forumid 45 and disappears from the forumid 88 for product displays.

I'd like to keep the products seperate from the reviews or reviews as reply posts under the product thread. at this time this is not happening. a review is made and creates a new thread.

my current settings are:

Review Thread Forum ID
Required only if "Create Thread On Review" is enabled. Specify which forum [by id] product reviews should be posted too. You may want to disable posting new threads to this forum. forumid 88

and
New Product Forum ID
The forum where user-created product threads are placed by default. forumid 45

88 is my product reviews forum topic
45 is my product display forum topic

the attached image may shed some light on what is happening. the prefixed threads are threads made before the mod. this was our old system and I haven't removed it...yet. Once this works I will remove these posts.

Reviews will always make a post reply, there's no setting or function to disable this... the thread is the option which you can turn on or off.

Approving a product lets you change the forum [the first option] so be sure the area you want it to be in is the same as what's selected.

As far as prefixes, nothing should have changed but we'll figure it out.

Phrost

Yes, you can add multiple rating attributes to products using a 5-star, yes/no or free-form attribute. The option is global [all ratings for all products] and will be for the time being.

Take a look at the screenshots or try the beta and let us know if this cuts it.

Thanks Ted, going to give this a whirl.

Product threads can be created in multiple forums you want. Simply enable the option per forum and either create a product their in your ACP or move a user submitted product there also via your ACP.

Review threads can go in any one forum you want. If you chose to enable them at all.

Review replies always go into the product thread and are not an option.

You can do whatever you want with the threads themselves, just be sure product threads stay in a forum that's product review enabled.

An example structure can be found in the main post of this mod showing 4 different product areas and one review discussion area.

Product Reviews
|--> Parachute gear
|--> Rock climbing gear

This way I can have some sort of organization...?

Sounds like I need to clean up the introduction a bit... Let's try this:

PRF has two elements: products and reviews. Products are the master to which reviews are made, thus there needs to be a product before there can be a review.

You can structure product forums literally however you want with 3 even levels
- Gear 1
- Gear 2
- Gear 3

Or you could nest levels to be even more specific

- Gear 1
--- Gear 1 subset a
--- Gear 1 subset b
- Gear 2
- Gear 3
--- Gear 3 subset a

Reviews will always be appended to product threads as posts plus you can optionally elect to have them create a new thread to just one forum.

Does that make sense? Does it accomplish your goal?

p.s. I'm an avid climber, diver, etc so if that's a real example shoot me over your forum url, I'd love to check it out. :D

This is what is in the database for the content of this post: http://www.pipesmokerscubby.com/showthread.php?1014-Savinelli-Tortuga-Straight-Apple-207-6mm-Filter-Italian-Briar-Smoking-Pipe

Savinelli, the worlds No.1 selling pipe Ferrari have given the Italians a reasonable edge in the world of motoring but that?€™s not all they strive at. Since 1876 Savinelli have kept the Italians at the pinnacle of the pipe manufacturing game! Putting the Italian legacy behind us for a minute if you where to look at the Savinelli range you could be forgiven for thinking they are a classic high end British made pipe. We have received a number of comments over the years from our high end pipe customers who believe the quality of the briar and the finish of Savinelli pipes exceed what is strongly regarded as the epitome of the pipe world and they don?€™t demand the same price tag (No names mentioned as we are British through and through) Savinelli Tortuga 207 The Savinelli Tortuga 207 is a classic straight Apple 6mm smoking pipe with a stunning black, Sandblast finish on the bowl and contrasting tortoise shell effect, tapered, mouthpiece. The Apple shape is arguably the most comfortable bowl shape for most palms and the briar wall stays thickest where it is needed the most, which helps keep the pipe cool along with the smoke. Ash cap As soon as we saw the Savinelli Tortuga we had to have them. We?€™ve seen pipes with lids before but nothing this high end. Each Tortuga comes with a hand fitted lid, in a stunning tortoise shell effect to match the mouthpiece. The base of the lid is made from a fire proof rubber so you can plug the pipe mid smoke and bury your pipe in your pocket so the boss doesn?€™t catch you smoking. Balsa wood filter Unique to Savinelli is their Balsa wood filter system. The triangular shape does not form a seal in the bore of the pipe so allows an un-restricted full flavoured draw but the extremely porous and highly absorbent nature of the Balsa wood is very effective at removing moisture and impurities form the smoke. And for those who prefer a totally unfiltered smoke Savinelli provide a plug to block the system.

The XML process should update every existing product that's included using the SKU / UPC and Title as a key.

There is only one link field supported by default but of course you could add more, or put them in the description.

Why not make a quick change to your XML to add in SKUs [they don't have to be real to anyone else, just a simple 001, 002, 003, ... works], delete the forum & existing products and reimport now?

This will save you a lot of headache making updates down the road.

Okay, so essentially I need to add sku's no matter what, it makes more sense to me to add the real ones, adding fake sku's would be a bit faster as I would not have to access the real ones from the source site but it feels wrong to me so I will add the real ones.

Ted, once I delete the existing Products and then import the xml's again, is there some way I can stop them from showing in the activity stream. Actually I'm not surprised. The activity stream is the most modular part of vB4 I've worked with and clearly just getting started... In searching for examples of mods with their own bits I found none so while I don't know that PRF is the first to get into it, it is possible.

There's no hooks for us to plug into, which is why we didn't make any exclusions in 1.3 but you can trick it manually... but it's not a solve I'd suggest.

How unique are your titles [i.e. how many overlap with other products]?

A great many have similarities, there are multitudes fot Products from the same manufacturers, IE there are several listings starting with Falcon, or Peterson and so on. I am more than a little intrigued to learn where you are going with this. :)

Well we don't have to match on SKU + Title, we could just do title but if there's products with identical titles that would cause all sorts of problems and essentially leave you with multiple items for one and no way to find what's missing.

Ok but first let's see if the import update worked...

When you ran it what sort of output did you get [it should tell you if it updates or creates a product for each record].

Any duplication?

MS office does some nasty things with special characters, we'll have to work on the filtering a bit more using the version we posted for you. No reason to use it now unless you have other updates to make through XML importing.

Hiya Ted,

please do not continue with the weird character problem, I have just discovered the problem has absolutely nothing to do with your mod at all, the problem is coming from the source data itself, the weird characters are in the data entered into the xml's when I wrote them. I took the text from the website the products are sold on and they are right there in the text on that site.

So sorry for wasting your time with this, I will notify the site owner and let him know of the problem, thank you for your continued excellent first rate support Ted.

Products have a whole extended set of data that is displayed back so you'd have to create that manually or import it off of other products. Basically yes, but not without some work.

It's never even been mentioned before so sorry but no info...

I'm not familiar with GARS in the least so if you can explain how it worked [were there items, clustered reviews, single reviews, etc] I can get more specific.

Phrost
08-10-2012, 07:54 PM
GARS basically added extra fields and custom templates to a thread on a per-forum basis. It allowed you to have multiple numeric rating fields for a product (associated with a single thread). Each thread would be the "parent", and subsequent posts could either review the product by rating the various options, or just make an ordinary post.

For example, we had Martial Arts School reviews broken down with ratings such as:

*Class Size
*Equipment
*Facility
*Striking
*Grappling

All 1-10 ratings.

It was basically an overlay onto existing threads, and had options to customize the layouts of said threads. You could either use it as a Reviews, or an Article system, by customizing those meta-templates, and then assigning them to individual forums.

Here's the only screenshot of GARS that I have left; it's from a sidebar added to a forum thread displaying the ratings.

http://www.bullshido.net/images/ads/reviews.jpg

On a personal note, it boggles my mind why this hasn't been remade or even incorporated into VB itself. When we upgraded to 4.0, we essentially turned thousands of reviews into ordinary forum threads, because we lost GARS.

And oh, if you have modified templates prepare to merge them.

Your settings are incorrect and the script can not create images. Double check the path for where images should go [you need to work from root so /home/mysite/forum/products/ or such] and set the folder to 0755 writeable.

Once that's complete and you can upload one image re-run the importer which will try to salvage the old images [if not I can show you a query to get them back and then let you import then again].

Right now, the product reviews are sorted by the date the thread/product was created. How do I set the forum to show by latest reply and how do we get productforums.php to show a list of categories and then latest reviews below that? (Or just latest reviews?)

The first issue requires a hack as [currently] we're looking at the product table rather than the reviews one. You could either add a column for last reviewed or change the table query around to do a JOIN statement.

The second change also requires a quick hack to the code to add in the drop down list. You can basically copy how the manufacturer dropdown works or wait for the next release as this sounds like it's worth being added in.

You'd have to hack the php code to insert the images rather than text... Sub-elements are built as a review is created so there's no database storing of the individual selections.

There are however phrases you can work off of which will help a bit.

Having lots of problems with search. On any search for manufacturer for example, the URL as shown in the browser is productforums.php?mrfg=xxxx but the results page says "No products matched your search. Try broadening your criteria or selecting another category."

There are definitely manufacturers in the database (and verified via phpMyAdmin) that have the exact string as chosen from the drop down menu.

Additionally, a text box search for product name (thread title) uses URL as productforums.php?title=yyyy which returns a list of every product in the database, regardless of it being in the thread/product title.

Ideas?

GCC LLC
08-27-2012, 08:14 PM
OH and FYI, for a future release I noticed that you had the manufacturers drop down box limited to a maximum of 100 results. We have a large import and our manufacturer's drop down box stopped showing results at the letter N.. I dug through the code and removed the SQL LIMIT statement on that and now it works fine. Others may have a similar problem, so that's how I fixed it on our end.

Lists of even 100 names are rather unmanageable for users and should really be changed to search input boxes...

That said I'll take a look at the search bug and see if we can fix it.

GCC LLC

Every store in our industry has well over 100 manufactureres so if your going to support a mass import of products then users are going to get a list of companies that stops in the middle because of the 100 set limit whether its manageable or not. I agree there has to more search options but you will still run into this error with bulk imports.
