Make sure the file exists in your admin folder then make sure you have the URL correct.

im not saying it was but im not the first to have this problem after installing the hack

are there any other good supported spam hacks? this one seems to be cutting down on bots registering but the ones that get through are posting links and stuff and i have it set to stop them end i cant delet posta as spam and ban user because of the error so i have to do them seperate so its not submitting the bots. mind you im running 3.8

the easy way around this is to create a new usergroup and set all to no
i have trapped many who attempted to bypass it and can't coz their not put into default group and placed into a custom usergroup with no permissions

also ensure you have put your API keys in and review the logs dailt to submit their details to stopforumspam

India mainly, one after another. If that country didn't have so many IP ranges I'd ban the whole place. The mod Stop the Registration Bots works better than glowhost spam-o-matic for these guys.

you can put an ignore on the user, just place the userid of the person you want it to ignore

IPs have to be used by spammers to get into the SFS database. If a user gets a spammer IP address from their provider, they should contact their provider to get a new IP address.

Here in Italy (and I guess for other countries) most of internet connection get a dynamic ip address, so it could be easy to get a banned IP, but IMHO this mod could be improved by a multi check IP/email/username, I also own a phpBB forum and use this little mod (http://support.prophpbb.com/topic2572.html) to prevent spammers, and it perform this multi check that works very well.

That permissions can be set within vB. using permissions. You can set Unregistered users to not be able to leave a post, but they can still view the blog.

let me rephrase, I have spammers STILL joining & blogging instead of posting, ALL spammers seem to go to the blog section, there have been no spam post, just spam blogs.

Do not put new users in the newbies group. Your settings should not cause many posts to be moderated. IF it does send many posts to the moderation queue, then turn this off. You can use vbulletin promotions, to send users to a newbie usergroup. Configure usergroup permissions for newbie usergroup to apply restrictive permissions. Then add another promotion, to promote newbies to another usergroup if they receive more than X reputation points.

I am new to this mod and noticed today that it had placed 4 spammy posts in moderation cue. So I went to the vb ACP moderation panel. I only see one post and it is by a legitimate user with nothing to indicate spam, so I selected validate on the bottom left, then clicked save. The screen well went sort of blank, it did not show anything so I had to click the menu to the left to moderate post again and it was still there. So I did this again. Same result.

The post the user had made was a comment on an article in the CMS, so I finally disabled the mod, found the post in the vbcms comment section of the forum. Then I moderated it there and selected approve posts, still no luck, but then I cleared the CMS cache and had to rebuild the tables to get the post to show.

If I auto-moderate post, what is the proper procedure to approve them and get them to show if this happens again?

I'm pretty sure he means that if you ban a user as a spammer you can currently remove posts, and the request is add the ability to remove visitor messages as well. If visitor messages are being added removing social group messages would be nice too.

you would need to go into the sql table and remove his info as his ip, name or email has been flagged already

If the IP was used by spammers, tell him that he should complain to his ISP.

I have had to uninstall this particular addon much to my chagrin mainly because while it's running, my users are getting an issue of not being able to post. They are receiving an error of "Your post is too short" when they try to post anything, like their post is being emptied after this mod scans the post.

Anyone have any thoughts on this as I noticed by going through posts that this has happened with a couple of folks and it goes unanswered.

Username check is disabled on my forum, but there is a new member whose posts keep getting sent to moderation. He is a lawyer, his registration email address uses the domain of his website, and his posts don't have links in them. hello all, im new to this site and new to VB, i have installed this mod on our forum and so far its fantastic. but i do have a question, we have had spammers banned pretty much as soon as they enter the forum either by the system or other mods. if we have a banned member with no posts, can we "one touch ban" them? it would be really nice (for newbies like me) to have a "ban and clean" button on each members profile page. or have i just missed something?

3 times now, I had a user signup (not a spammer) and something in the registration system is causing it to double and triple create accounts with the exact username. The user ids are consecutive though. EX: JohnW (id34) & JohnW (id35) & JohnW (id36)

This is the only mod I have that is for Registrations. Anyone else experiencing this? I wonder if the user is clicking on the register button multiple times while waiting for the Spam Check to come back.

Why would I do that...I said he wasn't a spammer? :confused: I think this mod may be fouling up the registrations by taking too long to complete them. The person signing up is probably pressing the Complete Registration button more that once. Sort of like when a double post happens.

I tried going back to v1.2.8 after a complete uninstall and I started getting a DB error while trying to import xml file. So I re-installed v2.0.1 and looks like my issue is a mod conflict with KeyCAPTCHA here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=257294).
I disabled KeyCAPTCHA mod and now SOM is displaying stats on forum home page and in the logs in admincp. It would be nice if I could get both mods to work together like I did when I had v1.2.8 installed.

I have disabled and even uninstalled Keycaptcha, but the stats are still not showing on my home page. All it shows is the "Spam-O-Matic Statistics" and nothing underneath.

Well, I'd like to say this mod has done its job well on my forum. Can't recall if I've had many spammers get through since installing this (Though I've had some issues where it wouldnt let a real person register). About a years worth of using this resulted in this: "13904 Spammers Denied Registration". Sounds like its doing good to me.

So what mysql version did you have

So I was running 1.2.7, on 4.1.2 I believe, I upgraded.to 4.1.11 and started getting error 500s on replying orc reating a new topic or post.
After troubleshooting for a couple of days, found out that disabling Spam-O-Matic made the error go away.

So I removed 1.2.7 and installed latest version from here, 2.0.2, and the same error 500s are showing up when replying or new topics.

again, disabling it, fixes the problem.

I have tried running just Spam-O-Matic with no other mods and still the same issue
Any ideas?

Seems to be that Users which are found with too much URL-Count automatically gets posted to Akismet. Seems that I have to find a suitable URL-Count.

In this testing time: Will there be any possibility to report "false-positives", so that the User will not be blocked by Akismet again?

You have already removed the previous XML file? The next step requires FTP access to your server. Just change the name of your upload folder to the name of your forums folder. Drop the upload folder after the name is changed into the primary folder that holds your forums folder.

What is the name of my forums folder? I have so many folders. Is it the "Includes" folder? That has a folder in it called "XML" which has other items in it.

However my "install" folder also has a folder called "includes". But that one does not have an "XML" folder in it.

This stuff is so confusing.

The folders you are naming are withing the primary forum directory. Your structure should look similar to this one that I kind of made up!! I figured a picture might help. Notice the following:

1) The top folder is the primary folder that holds the forums and or other items that you may have like shopping carts and so forth.

2) The second folder is the vB folder for your forums. It may not be called forum, mine is not, but that folder is where all of vB resides.

3) All the folders under the second folder are vB folders for the forum. You may have some mods on your forum and they will show up as well.

So by telling you to rename the Upload folder to the name of your forum folder you would be looking at the second one in the picture. However, you will drop the folder onto the 1st folder. The first folder is the ROOT of the forum.

This is handled through permissions. Do not allow guest to post, and do not allow new members to post on blogs until they reach a desired number of posts on the forum. Or you can set it so that all new members posts are moderated before they are displayed.

Now Spam-O-Matic will remove a lot of stuff for you, but you have to make other preventative measures against problems like that. I don't allow guest to post, leave guest messages, leave messages on blogs, and new members I have set to have a minimum of 5 moderated posts before they become a registered user. Then they have a lot more freedom.

In my FTP program, however, I can only see the Forum folder (actually mine is labled "/") and then the folders beneath that (admincp, etc). I cannot see the primary folder (the one you labeled "My Primary Directory")

I may be able to offer you a little more assistance. I suggest having PHPMyAdmin because it gives you a direct link to the database. However, that is another totally different tool to learn how to use, and without a full understanding of database and the structure of a database, I would not mess with it for now.

So you did not point your forum to a primary folder? That is okay there is another way to do everything, just ignore what I told you in the threads above. It takes a little longer to transfer, because you transfer items individually.

As far as shopping carts, yes you can add them however, most of them are not great. I'm speaking with a designer and trying to get a nice cart integrated into vB4. That's another topic. I tell you what send me a PM. The rest of this I can help you with away from the thread.

change permissions of the normal reg user group so they cant post at all in the blog then make a new user group and set it to transfer them to the new group after so many posts

Check this one out, invesiple stoonswimmilt@gmail.com 212.94.104.4 signed on April1. SFS list stoonswimmilt@gmail.com 788 times starting back February 19. However none of those entries list IP 212.94.104.4. While a spammers IP may change they have to confirm with the e-mail addresses.

Another one; feariammaby j.u.l.o.ngj.u.long@gmail.com 121.11.64.13 joined April 1. Listed 1000 times on SFS starting March 14. Again I do not see the IP in the list.

is it just me or does each version upgrade just seem to make things worse. I spend more time fixing and updating than working on content. Now I understand why alot of big boards are still running 3.8.
Sorry for the rant but I can see why developers stop updating these mods we've all grown to love and depend on.

This may be in how you have the system configured. Do you allow registration if there is a hang up in the system? You have to go through the settings and pay close attention to small things like that. You also have to let your moderators be aware of the fact that not everyone will be caught, if you allow registration anyway.

My suggestion is to allow registration, but still moderate at least the first two posts. Make sure the new members do not write access to blogs, or comments, etc. etc.

Try reducing this: Auto-Moderation: Minimum Post Count- 6 Maybe set it to a 2. Then after they make two post they can post links. That will at least give you the opportunity to see if they are posting good or bad information. If that is the case and the number of post to be moderated is 2, then they will be moved into the Registered Members area and be able to post links. If that is the case and what you want to do, then change the number of links back to 0.

Just remember that not bots, but people that are posting information will make a good post at least once. You have to watch out for signatures, so turn them off for newbies.

They tell you step by step how to create the new user group that the new members are placed in for SOM to moderate. After the moderation of SOM they are moved to the next usergroup where vB takes over.

I hope that gives you a little better understanding.

Hello. I was told to ask you guys "what to do" from Wayne Luke over at VB Tech support.
OK. New users are not showing up as "Users to be modified" any longer.

The same six "users that need to be modified" are always there.
The newest users show up in the "user" section, but don't show up in the Control panel to alert me. Wayne told me it was Glowhost issue. He could not find any other problems.

So.
I have the latest mod, 2.0.2, and so that can't be it...
do you have any ideas?

I'm on the fence about this, it's an internal message that only moderators will see. This is a free mod, that boy does help when fighting spam, and is almost necessary.

Giving you the optional ability to remove credits in the footer is something other authors don't do.

So I wasn't hurt by it, what ticks me off are straight out advertisements stuck in my footer by authors, that kinda stuff is nuts (which this mod doesn't do)

I do agree with vissa. As this hides from the admin, this secret advertisement of hosting to moderators is plain spam. It seems intended for moderators to start a competing forum, which would be simply malicious.

I find this very ironic for an addon that is supposed to fight spam. This should be clearly stated in the description of this addon.

Are you still having the same issue? I was and after a little research I found that if you are running MySQL 5.5 it does not recognize the ?Type=MyIsam:? . It was valid for for older versions. Let me show you how I corrected the problem.

Don't think so, the whole point of submitting a spammer, is that there is a submitted spam post/evidence with their user info.

Exactly. If someone hasn't spammed, why would you submit them to a spam database? If people start doing that, the spam database becomes useless.

90% of the spammers that I get don't get the chance to post because they don't seem to get past the advanced forum rules check that I have. This is site wide and no one can post until they accepted these rules.

This option would be userful to me, but I have not pushed for it because I can see how it could be abused.

If they post spam but the post is moderated, then submit them to the database. If they don't get a chance to post at all, they're not spammers (yet) and should not be submitted.

I personally disagree. And I think this states the obvious:

Users: loans_online_bc07, payday_UK0420, same_day_loanb07, credit_check_ loansA30, payday_loans_bb07, Instant_AA24, cash_loansCAS23, online_insurance419, payday_loans0419, payday_UK_AA30, cash_loansAA03, cash_loansAA24, Bad-credit-loans23, advance_onlineAA03, instant_onlineAA03, loans_online0420, cash_loansBB24
And I have over 100 more accounts like these. Plus their profile information (URL, etc) are showing all kinds of advertisement links.

With other anti-spam methods I installed, they can't even post. But that doesn't stop them in registering. Spam-O-Matic, or in this case stopforumspam isn't 100% bot-stop-proof and I'd like to submit them to stopforumspam (the easy way) but I can't because they haven't posted.

I hope you do realize that the Spam-O-matic is meant to perm ban bots. Why would you want to Infract those AI? (Artificial Intelligence). Bots are not real humans, they are programmed to spam (usually advertisements) on other people's forums. There is no point in Infracting bot users.. They are meant to be banned and or removed entirely.

I do agree that sometimes the email address or member name is a giveaway that might warrant submitting to the database.

It would be really nice to have a form for new users like the one shown in the image, but with tick boxes on the right for banning and submitting to the database.

I've done some searches in this post, but so far I can't find the answer ...

I'd like our moderators to be able to see the Spam-o-Matic logs so they can check if they get an email from someone claiming they were rejected at registration as being a spammer.

Currently, they don't see those logs, so is there a way of turning on an option so they can?

For spambots, I identify the IP address and block them as IP ranges at the server level: xxx.xxx.xxx.0/24 - otherwise, it's way too much work trying to keep up with them.
