please help me I have a problem as indicated below. It is where I plug the instalation. I upload files to ftp upload where they belong. When I plug intalierte so came one message. I have vb 4.1.5 and up have not yet instaled a plug bitfield_glowhostspamomatic.xml I have not.

I think i have installed 'spam o matic' correctly via ftp

The question is that i know i have to go to admin/plugins/download and uploads

I see the .xml section but thats about where my knowledge finishes and i really need to go the next to get rid of so much spam

How do i finish off the installation of the files to get this up and running ??

i did find a file titled

cpnav_glowhostspamomatic.xml on my computer

but when i tried to import it , the notice was 'invalid file type'

now i am really confused becasue of limited knowledge and skills

i thought i was there for a second

on friday when i tried my first ftp somehow all the folders in the 'download folder' on my computer changed to word document display and i had to install 7zip to be to extract the files and drag them over to filezilla, cant help but think perhaps this has complicated matters somewhat

Download the zip again and you will find a file in it that is called product-glowhostspamomatic.xml i know this for sure as i just did it ;-)

there are two subfolders/ admincp+includes/ when i open 'includes' there is a file called 'functions_ghsom.php' and another sub folder titled 'xml'

when i open the 'xml' file the only file there is called 'cpnav_glowhostspamomatic.xml

So i am not going blind but this does not fix my current dilemma ??

ok the situation was that when i extracted the files from the zip folder the required file does not extract , i have since opened the zip and discovered ther required file is actually there and that for reasons unknown does not extract ??

Long story short once i found it i moved it the downloads folder on my computer where i could access it for the 'import'

So yes i have installed and can see it on the products list in my vbulletin admin !!

In that case, I'd like to report this as a bug. We have QueryConnection Errors set to "Allow Registration". When the API last went down (timing out due to overloading), the registration was not allowed through.

I went back to our logs from the last outage. We had 100+ users rejected during the downtime with the same message:

Spam-O-Matic Tagged email - *****@****.com Unable to connect to StopForumSpam.com. This is probably due to some temporary problems on their website: Unable to check. User passed to vBulletin registration system per your settings at 'StopForumSpam: Q

If this is an uncommon issue (I've only seen one downtime since I started using it), then I'll live with it. A really nice safety feature would be an email notification when the API stops responding.

Installed and working, but I don't have the log option in my admin panel. I have the Spam-O-Matic in my settings >>options but I don't see the log in the Statistics and Logs.

I've searched this thread and I don't see anyone else with this issue. Can something help me find what I've done wrong?

This mod has no control over whats in the SFS database, if the username is in it's DB I believe you can petition to have it removed.
Really though, as many users suggest in the last few pages of posts, you should turn off username recognition, as email addresses and other options can prevent the spammers just as well.

Congrats on a great tool. A couple of observations:

1) Spammers are getting smarter and coming in after a failed attempt from another IP address. If you look at our logs:

you will see a couple of users that tried to get in and failed with a spammer IP address. They then connect via a different IP address that isn't YET flagged in the system and can get in. (geraldevens and JohnAdams even used the same IP address 112.206.138.240) I would think that once a user attempts to get in via a failed IP address, the email address they attempted to connect with would be added to the database so that any future attempts would be prevented. (as well as adding IP addresses from bad email addresses) If when geraldevens tried a second time, the system knew he was a spammer, the IP address of his second attempt (112.206.138.240) would have been logged as well. Not only would he have not made it in, but JohnAdams would not have made it in either.

2) Is there a way to manage/report spammers from a user profile? From the documentation it looks like the only way to report a spammer is through the forum post moderation tools. What about spam that post in a Blog and not a forum? How do I mark that user as a spammer? (sorry if it's been answered, but I couldn't find any insights in the 80+ pages of thread) Having a tool in the user profile to mark them as a spammer would be useful. We want to contribute to the KB of spammers on the StopForumSpam site.

Anyway, thanks for building this tool. A site I help admin has been targeted by spammers and this tool is helping fight those attacks. (it would even be better if the previously mentioned items were incorporated into the product) :)

There used to be a feature of reporting a user from inside the AdminCP, it that was taken out with the latest version, but has been promised to us again in the next.

Patience is a virtue around here...sometimes mods don't get updated for a long while :(

It doesn't auto-flag spammers, it just compares them to what's already in the database. In order to add more information to the SFS database it must be when you mark them as a confirmed spammer. But right now it just checks to see if something is listed in the DB then if so marks them as failed, it doesn't submit any more information to SFS.
Perhaps its something the devs would consider.

I have a list of keywords which will detect most bot posts, but in our site access section where guests can post, everything goes into a moderation queue just to be safe.

If by grayed out, you mean there's nothing under: Spam-O-Matic Statistics, that's because you haven't had it installed long enough to list any stats there. Once it starts blocking spammers, you'll start seeing the stats

If you are worried about your members adding other members to the list then make sure you protect the members groups from within the glowhost settings.

Since I've Installed it and signed up to both akismet.com and StopForumSpam.com It's caught every bad registration so far so I would definately recommend you sign up for both Keys and then enter them into your glowhost settings.

Yes but that gives me all the detailed info. I would have to go through it manually and count up each one for a summary. If I turn it on, It will publish the stats to my Board Statistics section that is open for public view but I don't want to advertise how many I have stopped to the public, just to my self.

I guess I can just manually count it, just dont understand why there is only a public summary page and not a summary page in the admin center.

BTW what I don't know is what will happen to that specific user from now on. If his IP, address and username was sent to the spammers DBs, I think you will have to go to each one of those two sites and send a letter to their webmasters or something. I didn't see any "send good infor about this user to spammers lists" button anywhere in this addon.

I never did this, but I still have the database backup. Is there anyway to insert the threads and posts from that user back into the database? Maybe use the new user ID for the member?

It's about 10,000 posts and some of the threads were very good topics.

I've just set up a test instance for 4.1.7 and all my other products work so far, but this one gives the following when I try and import the xml file (after having uploaded the relevant folders):

EDIT: I get the same error for the limited guest viewing product. I can't see anything wrong though - I have MyISAM as my default storage engine (I actually don't have InnoDB at all). I'm off to check the manual (mysql version 5.5.16), but if anyone has any ideas in the mean time, please post away.

EDIT2: The 5.0 manual suggests TYPE is deprecated and it should say ENGINE, but that TYPE is supported. There is no mention of TYPE in the 5.5 manual.

I have been handed our companies forum to look after and im stuck trying to install this as im a complete newb.

I have downloaded but i cant seem to upload to vbulletin 4.17. I point to the cpnav_glowhostspamomatic.xml and vbulletin reports inavlid file specified. I have tried to follow the instructions in the zip but not sure where to put the other files using filezilla as the forum was installed by global gold and again im a useless newb.

Any help would be superb and help me save a few hours of my day on spam.

Just installed at our forum today running 4.1.7 patch 1, caught 8 spammers already and allowed legitimate registrants in without a hassle. We've been able to turn off manual moderation of new members. Great mod. Thanks GlowHost!

If I activate it, I can't post anything, after I click send when I start a thread or reply, I get a pop up telling me "are you sure you want to leave" and after I click ok, I get a blank page.

Strange, the same happened to me when upgrading from 4.1.6 to 4.1.7, but I had an outdated [GlowHost] Spam-O-Matic, I updated it and everything fine.

Now from 4.1.7 to 4.1.7 patch 2, the same, blank pages and alerts when trying to post, reply, erase a message, etc...

So definitely there's something.

That was happening to me as well.

Download it and upload the files, so installing it again fixes the problem.

the annoying "are you sure you want to leave" prompt is something I experienced in 4.1.4, and fixed it/disabled it using a suggestion here:

not sure why you are trying to stop spammers trying to get in by yourself cause this is what this mod does it is automatic and the few that get in you go to your thread tools and go through process which report it to stop forum spam ....this mod is the best there is imo this has saved me and my staff at my site much time ....

if this happens and its very rare what i usually do is wait for the spammer to post and then i block the ip in acp and sever of course if you know its a spammer from the logs then you can just ban it without a post... when sfs comes back online its auto again and you are back to normal

Instead of pissing people off that are choosing some benign username, maybe you could say that the username they have selected is not available.

I usually end up turning that off too when adding this mod to clients forums. It's just way too aggressive due to the fact that as you say so any benign names are on th list (for example choosing yor first name will almost certainly see you told you are a spammer)

To me an option to only block username if it also matches the spammer ip or email would be good.

looking at the path foro/includes it should say forum/includes you sure you have the files installed in the right path

I have problems using this product in combination with automated posted via the scheduled tasks of vBulletin. We have an product that is using the datamanagers to automatically create threads/posts.

But because the Spam-o-Matic is relying on the "userinfo", it doesn't work when the scheduled tasks are ran via the cron (When you manually start a scheduled task, the userinfo DOES exist).

vBulletin doesn't rely on the userinfo within the datamanagers, but is using the information supplyed in the datamanager, for example "userid" or "username" in the thread/post array.

Is there any way you can fix this in the very near future?

On my big board a frequently recurring theme in support questions, is questions from users that were denied registration. My moderators try to answer these questions by searching for IPs on stopforumspam.com This is not very effective, since users can be banned on other grounds. Please give moderators a function to search the SFS log, so they can see why a user was denied.

The reason you see that in the log is because it was found on SFS data base and rejected the user from registering on your site. The work has already been done for you and the mod is working correctly.
Should a spammer get by the mod and spam on your site then you can report their info to SFS so the next site they try and join they will get automatically rejected.

Is there a way to set it up to automatically delete zero post members that are still in the Newbie group after say 48 hours?

Or a way to report the members that are still getting past the spam filter. I had to remove the ability for Newbies to stop spamming my Blogs.

I don't want them to reflect statistics that don't really exist.

I'm sorry Glow, but this confused me a bit. Are you saying that what is in the database is automatically submitted to stopforumspam.com at some point? Or, are you saying it was already in the database at stopforumspam.com?

I think my second guess is probably right, and that makes sense. I was thinking that the addon did some sort of checking internally to determine that the email address was 'bad', but now that I think about it, it's probably coming from the stopforumspam.com database.

sorry for all the posts, testing like mad here.
all these problems happened on a test version of the site we built.

Not having any problems on the real site, and the mp3 bbcode player is working.

Perhaps we just need to re-install spam-o-matic in the test site. Right now it's a consistent problem that if it's enabled we get the above error message on any post attempt.

Problem solved FYI. Somehow functions_ghsom.php got deleted during some install we were doing, don't know how.

Once I copied it back into the includes folder the test site works again.

Since installing this mod every time a user joins up (if not spammer) it says "Sent to vBulletin Registration System" but the user is then sat in the (COPPA) Users Awaiting Moderation primary usergroup rather than registered user. Am I missing some config for this mod as I can't see anywhere in the mod to alter the group it places users in.

So, I cannot absolutely attribute this to your mod, but I installed it on 4.1.8 a few days ago and some of my new users are not being registered correctly...Infact, they are showing up as guests...However, guests are not supposed to be allowed to post (per permissions), and although their user names show in the newbies usergroup via the adminCP, none of their info (even email or username) is viewable in the user view of the adminCP....Kinda not good on my live forum...

The users that show of as guests show they cleared the system and got sent to registration, and they show as recently registered...

I no longer can see which users have confirmed their email or not....

I think there is an small bug. When settings default usergroup for newbies.

Newbies Manager: Newbies Group ID
The group ID that new users will be put into immediately after successfully registering.

What is successful registration?
I have set email verification as first step.
So, my successful registration comes when the newcomer confirms his email.

But Spam-O-Matic moves the newcomer to Newbies Group ID without waiting for email confirmation. And should have move after email confirmation.

My mistake. This was reported several. Any fix or workaround?

My question is: what is the easiest way to Lift a Ban on a user? I see them listed in the log file, but I'm not finding any way to release them from the user ban..

Do I just have to go to ACP > Users > Add new user - and manually create their account?

I think I found the answer to my own question; since no user account is created when a user is 'blocked' by spamomatic - there is no way to 'lift the ban'

Any suggestions for another approach to this that would involve lest steps than manually creating user accounts for legitimate users?

Turn off username checking. Since bots use fairly common names sometimes, real people will get blocked. Just keep IP and email address checking on, turn on human verification in your VB settings and ask a simple question.

I had a typo above. Yes the file glowhostspamomatic.php is uploaded and in the correct folder. I renamed that folder on install for security but have updated the filename on line 11 so that it matches the correct structure.

Not sure why the xml is being impacted?

406 Spammers Denied Registration
3 Spammy Posts Automatically Moderated

Results speak for themselves.

One question I do have, I have perhaps 3 or so users which I know are spammers, I don't want to go banning them since it doesn't help anyone, is there a way of reporting them? Share the love I say.

I believe that option was removed. Go to thread(s) you want to report and click on moderation tools. You should be able to do all from there.

@ chatpalace check my earlier posts on this topic. The Author basically never even bothers visiting here let alone update or give a hand and a voice their work. You'll have to visit glowhost.com and ask for him to have a look , thats what I had to do, twice this year. The Mod is somewhat semi abandoned. Shame, such a good mod

that doesn't work for me, most people that join our forums come from local references, google search's, and word of mouth and we are targeting a small like minded group of people from a specific national region. The last thing I want if to discourage my genuine members even more by using such sanctions.

But the point I was trying to get across wasn't about stopping spammers from filling up their profiles, I already have measurements for that. The point I was trying to make is that this mod should have allowed the users to be able to submit suspected spammers to the Antispam (Stopforumspam) database like we used to be able to do with the earlier version. I've run into a problem where spam-o-matic lists other users that signed up with the same ip, but when I click on them the link is broken.
