I am using version 2.0.2 but can't see any list of the version history to know if its worth upgrading to the 2.1 version. Anyone know?

Also, if you are upgrading, what are the steps? It says uninstall if you are upgrading from version 1.x but doesn't mention what to do for 2.x upgrades. e.g. do you set it to Overwrite existing installation? Do you still upload all the files? Or uninstall first?

Hi guys,

Users have been reporting issues with registering and posting.

They get the following error message:

vbulletin support seems to think it is a plugin causing the issue and I narrowed it down to spam o matic.

Can I fix this?

SOLVED.

The function names are totally different between 2.1.0 and the previous version 2.0.2.

I had installed the xml file for upgrade, but I had accidentally copied the wrong include files from the old version (2.0.2 instead of 2.1.0).

As a result, the hooks were calling the updated function names that did not exist. Once I correctly copied the upload/* files from the correct version into vbulletin all was well.

Hope this helps someone.

vB5 vs. vB4 have a completely different format. I could be wrong but my guess would be that the between the two there will not be any compatibility. Now I could be wrong because I did not bother to update to vB5, as it seems that forums are becoming a thing of the past, which we need to fight against. Within the next couple of days I will post on vB.org, vB.com, my site and a number of other sites a start in ending the charade that social media has brought into our lives.

Someone else with vB5 may have a better answer, but I'm pretty sure it won't work.

That warning actually had a big underlying problem. It encased a large amount of code necessary for deletion to work, and when that warning line broke, all the code under/inside it broke too, which is why it didn't work for Nelson and the others reporting the issue.

Another product did not cause this conflict, and the reason you aren't experiencing this problem is because this problem was introduced in a recent release. You probably didn't upload the latest files to the correct directory and inadvertently averted this problem.



That foreach statement and it's closing brace -- there was no reason for it to be there, probably set in by accident.

Again, Sir, I want to thank you for solving this for me (and others). It has not occurred since!

if there is problem on outgoing traffic from vB
and you chose to ban & submit to SFS

then in the GSOM log is stays it submitted the user into SFS database w/o any indication o error

Cool plugin, but there is a pretty serious oversight in this plugin which led to a ton of abuse recently.

The remote cache option states the following: "Duration in minutes that remote queries should be cached to reduce query traffic / lookup duration and load on the remote server"

However the code says this:

$sql = 'DELETE FROM '.TABLE_PREFIX.'glowhostspamomatic_remotecache WHERE `date` < DATE_SUB(NOW(), INTERVAL '.(int)$vbulletin->options['glowhostspamomatic_remote_cache'].' DAY); ';

So we were hit by a botnet (one new registration attempt every four seconds, not even exaggerating) and we were expecting that after an IP was reported, that we wouldn't see that IP registering again after the 30 minute cache timeout. This led to two issues:

1) The cache isn't cleared for the banned user immediately, meaning the bot could immediately reregister without SFS being checked for the new entry.

2) The cache was 30 days old, so the same IP would literally create thousands of accounts before the cache would clear and start reporting the abuse.

This also led to another observation of the code. The order of checks goes username, email, IP. However the order of checks (to take advantage of cache) should go IP, email, username. The code shouldn't even waste time querying for a bad username if it knows the IP is bad, so why put unnecessary strain on the SFS service by querying for username if the IP is bad?

So, as I said, great plugin, but it needs some changes to work properly on a high traffic site effectively.

Edit: I thought I'd mention how I changed the query. This should hopefully increase cache efficiency also:

This would delete SFS negatives that are 30 minutes old, while letting SFS positives sit in the database cached for 30 days.

Stop Forum Spam is fine, but the ability to purge a spammer account and all traces while reporting the spammer is incredibly valuable to me. Remember, these a$$holes are running their scams and WE foot the bill. They are attempting to manipulate search engines with their garbage, and the more that is removed reduced their effectiveness.

There's a reason I removed the "welcome to our newest member code" from my site. Why would I want to welcome a potential spammer and potentially push up their internet search engine standing? Same thing goes for member listings...none of my forum members are listed until they have three validated posts.

Sorry for the rant, but this is a subject that is near and dear. Either way, if more forum owners were a bit more savvy and took more interest in purging/reporting spammers, we'd all be better off. ANY anti-spam tool is better than apathy.

Hi,

Our web servers are behind an Amazon load balancer in TCP mode (transport layer) - so they cannot see the IP address if a client. I could configure load Balancer in HTTP mode and get Amazon to pass X-Forwarded-For header. Will Spam-0-Matic work with this header? Or does it look for REMOTE_ADDR?

If I run HTTPS then I will have to terminate SSL traffic on the load balancer to get this header forwarded to the web server. Not very good from a security point of view.

Any other alternative if the above is not possible?

Yes, we look for REMOTE_ADDR. You can modify the SOM sources to use any other header you want. Search & Replace will do the job in few seconds.

Any number of reasons. There are some options that if enabled and not properly set up will stop anyone from posting on the forum.

Start by disabling the option below and see if that fixes it (at least until you set it up correctly).

I have installed this one mod where you have to confirm your email before the registration and u can't register if u don't confirm your email via given code. So far it's helping me a lot. I would say it brought down spammers from 100 in 12 hours time to 5-6 in 12 hours, however they are still that pass this option as well. If this gets hectic i will contact u for sure. If that okay for you :)

It would be great if any action at all - made by a mod on a post
(disapprove / approve / move ) would then cause the mod notification to go away,
but this was happening for me before this latest SOM update too.

Try going over settings for whatever mod you have installed will save you the time making unneeded posts

Yeah, that's how I'm leaning. The main feature I'd like added is to be able to Spam-O-Matic zap spammy threads at the forum display level, instead of having to open those threads and and select the individual post.

dont know this is a bug or not.

when a thread submited, and the member edit the 1st post and put lots of link inside it, the thread get moderated.

me (admin), try to approve the thread using the moderation tools, but the status of the post still moderated, i have to approve the post from the admincp.

very strange.. never had a problem like this before upgrade to 2.1.2

That's not a bug, it's part of Spam-O-Matic. In the settings you have to state how many url links are allowed per post, and if someone puts more links in that you've stated then no matter what their post count their post goes into moderation.

The thing to do is decide how many links you want members to put in their post. If they go over that amount then their post will go into moderation.

Have you set S-O-M to auto moderate?

If I was you I would not upgrade to vb5 for some time as there are way too many bugs in it. For me I never will don't like the look or the options. By the time vb5 is stable they will be plenty of mods to use on it so best to wait

I thought that since the user name was dynamically allocated that the IPs may be never-ending as well.

We use & rely on the SFS plug-in; the other one simply aids in the process.

I used an FTP utility to upload the contents of the upload folder to the root directory. I then used both the FTP utility and the File Manager in the cPanel of my web hosting service to verify that each of the following files is on the server:

admincp/glowhostspamomatic.php
includes/functions_ghsom.php
includes/xml/cpnav_ghostspamomatic.xml

Each file has the exact same size shown on the original copy on my local drive.

After uploading I imported the product_glowhostspamomatic.xml file using the product manager. I was then able to view and edit the settings in the Options section.

So please humor me. What am I missing?

Check you have not renamed admincp folder you can do this by checking your config or check url when logging into admin panel on forums

No. Still working great, the same as always.


You might want to check that you weren't just getting slammed by a bunch of bots or spammers at the same time (throughout the day) from known bad ips. It could appear that it was blocking everyone but in reality it could've been doing exactly what is was suppose to do ...that is until you turned it off.

Two things to check:

1. Google speed?

2. Cloud VPS?

the web host thinks it is caused by varnish which does reverse proxy, looks like installing mod_rpaf should solve the issue.

I have a problem. When the script sends a notification about spammer to StopForumSpam.com, then the user names that are written in the Cyrillic keyboard layout does not appear in the statistics. And I think that in general are not entered into the database. Although the logs on the site contains cyrillic usernames.

Here is example (http://www.stopforumspam.com/ipcheck/37.140.4.11). As you can see after the script reports to StopForumSpam there are blank usernames written in cyrillic (win-1251).

My board started acting screwy, people that hadn't visited in a while and new people's threads ans posts go into moderation... I disabled Spam-O-Matic and they can post normally.... Any ideas ? I hadn't made any changes to the Spam-O-Matic settings before this started happening and never had an issue before... I'd like to get it figured out because this is a GREAT add-on and I want to turn it back on.

I am having a problem where known spammers (I checked the credentials on sfs.com) are being allowed to register.

However, it auto-moderates their posts like clockwork. (usually via akismet)

Any suggestions on why it would be passing the SFS even though they are listed as known spammers?

Ok so I turned off Spam-O for a month and this issue did not appear. I turned on Spam-O Wed night and once again the ACP shows zero moderated posts, but clicking on new posts shows 2 posts in moderation.

I don't know if this has been happening from the start because I rarely check the ACP for moderated posts. One of my mods pointed it out and I checked it out. We've decided to ignore the issue since it's so minor and it doesn't appear that anything else if wonky.

The username part of it needs to be disabled as it is set like this when you install it. But if you dont want the same member to get that same error best to remove the xml and all files in ftp then reinstall it again and if you dont want to mod each post you will need to change a few settings in it so do look over that part of the settings.

I am having a problem where known spammers (I checked the credentials on sfs.com) are being allowed to register.

However, it auto-moderates their posts like clockwork. (usually via akismet)

Any suggestions on why it would be passing the SFS even though they are listed as known spammers?

Well I changed those things to the way you have them and I did enter the akismet key but still the same result with every new registrant being passed on through. Since it is not catching a single registration I'd think I just didn't have something checked or enabled. Under plugins in ACP when I go look at "edit" Glowhost it has no dependency checked. Don't know what that is exactly but figured I'd put it out there just in case.

ETA: Just submitted info. I think I just Delete user now that they haven't made any posts. And they won't be able to register again since their details were sent to the banned DB.

As i have already said do not update it remove all files and install it again. This means remove the xml and all files from the ftp then install it again as if you are doing it for the first time. If this still does not work for you (making sure username is disabled) then login to phpMyAdmin and find glowhostspamomatic_log find this guys name and delete it if you need help with this pm me

What is error message check server logs and email see if they have been sent to you. Will be emailed to the one in your config file. Make sure you have uploaded the files to the right folders

Even if you do have the latest best to install the one above as the latest version is letting in bots so the coder has messed something up and the one I have above fixes that and a few other things

Then you have other problems with either PHP files or a custom plugin. Try reinstalling all default files again from vb member area then running the upgrade.php make sure you disable all plugins from the config file first before doing this if you need one to one help pm me

Just installed this plug in due to a constant heavy spam attack.
While trying it out, a new user with a totally fake e-mail address is allowed through to be placed in the Newbie group.
Perhaps i'm not understanding the entire rules, but, i had thought that if the server for the e-mail address wasn't valid then the user would be classed as spam?

I have noticed the latest version in the ops post seems to be messed up the xml as well as the PHP files so I have fixed them try this fixed one

I personally haven't been having issues up to this point but I also don't use half of the options.


What sort of issues did you find/fix? ...and do you recommend all using this mod to update to your edited version?

If you are not having a problem then you have no need to install but if you want to see what changes have been done download both and compare them

I don't know what has been going on lately, but just overnight I had 3 spammers register for my forum and they all got through. They wait a few days before posting, but their usernames are all garbled up.

You were nice enough to take the time to fix the mod, which is greatly appreciated especially by those who needed it. But you then won't take 20 seconds to give a brief overview of what you did/fixed and just tell me to go compare hundreds of lines of code in multiple files. That's definitely your choice but doesn't make much sense.

You take the files from the upload folder and upload them to the right folders but make sure you dont upload the upload folder its self as a lot seem to make that mistake

Edit includes/functions_gsom.php and change the URLs around line 95+ to the US mirror.

Suggestion for author: Add in a fallback to the US mirror and/or let us select which mirror to use.

After I installed this mod all my new registered members were moved to the Users Awaiting Email Confirmation group (even if they activated their accounts) instead of the Registered Members Group. I'm using vb 4.2.1. Please look into it and find a fix.

I have been using this mod for a while with tremendous success in combination with Spam hammer.

I noticed this morning that there has been no recent activity in the logs which is strange as the mod is constantly stopping spammers. I have not had any new spammers register but also have not had any blocked so was just wondering if the logs are not working suddenly.

Do I just push the restart button for this in the ACP under the log section

hi there, I've added it to my site www.saverscene.com.au as I said before, I've set it to only block posts that have 3 or more links in them, however it's blocking every post from new users with 1 or 2 links as well.

I think the "Auto-Moderation: Bad Words" should check the Thread title also, not just the thread content.

Because lately, lots of people spam forum using Their "Spam" Title, but the content is an image, and they write the spam words or links into that image, so the "Auto-Moderation: Bad Words" didnt work.

You should change your user group settings so that those new users cannot create threads or that threads are automatically moderated.

Currently the only time you can use Spam-o-Matic is to be in the thread and select the post. I'd like to be able to select more than one thread and then just have the Spam-o-Matic show up in the Moderation options. this way it will affect the thread creator so we can get rid of several threads at once.

Can you imagine if you have 500 new users / day, and they creating 500 new threads every day?

That is not the answer of the problem, the glowhost spam o matic should read the title in the "badwords" option.
