This is a hack that will add icons to your forum categories on the forum home page.
History: I was the originator of this hack back in the vBulletin 1.x days and continued this in vb 3.7.x. I have had numerous requests to port this to vb 4.x.x so here you are.
Please click install if you want support for this mod and to encourage me to continue adding features!
Enjoy!
You can find nice icons here (http://www.iconspedia.com), here (http://www.vistaicons.com/) and here (http://www.crystalxp.net/en.htm).
Thanks to LatinoCheats for this (http://findicons.com/) link.
Changelogs:
1.2.0:
* Option to change icon location i.e. After Status Icon, Under Forum Title or Replace Status Icon.
* Now contains a dropdown listing your icons in the folder so you just select and save.
* Displays icon in forum manager when editing a forum that contains an icon.
* Change icon width and height so you need to only upload one size icon.
* Set icon position so you can center the icon when using smaller icons.
* Dropdown of transparency settings for icons used to replace status icons when indicating "Old Posts".
* Allows you to mark forum/subforum as read.
* Now shows locked icons (lock icon added to download and this overlays the status icons when indicating a locked forum).
1.2.1:
* Now works for Mark Forum/SubForum as read!
1.2.2:
* Fixed: template bug.
* Added: Now shows locked icons (lock icon added to download and this overlays the status icons when indicating a locked forum.)
1.2.3:
* Added: Automatic Template Edits!
* Added: Only jpg, gif and png icons allowed. (extensions checked in forum edit).
* Fixed: Mark Forum Read for specific forum/subforum.
* Fixed: Now shows non-transparent status icon when "Show Locks" is enabled.
1.2.4:
* Fixed: Users Viewing. (This is working on a default vb style, others styles may have issues)
* Fixed: Mark Read should now be fixed, working fine on my end.
* Fixed: Icon not appearing when "Forum Description" disabled.
2.0.0
* Icon size can be set either globally or set per forum, setting is in vb options.
* When selecting an icon in forum manager the selected icon now shows to the right of the dropdown so you can see what you are selecting.
* If your upgrading from 1.2.4 and had to do manual template edits then you will need to revert the templates and redo the edits.
Upgrades: For those upgrading just make sure when you import the product you select "Allow Overwrite". You will also need to revert your templates (only for users of version 1.2.2 or earlier) and then follow the instructions as outlined in the install.html file.
Note: Before you ask, yes this works with all browsers. (Tested on FF, IE8, IE7, Chrome, Safari and Opera) ;)
IMPORTANT! If you use the "Auto Template" feature of this mod and it doesn't work then you MUST do the manual template edits outlined in the install.html. This plugin was created using a default vbulletin style.
If you like this mod than please nominate for "MOTM".
Donations are gladly accepted!

Thanks a plugin is better than a manual edit especially when there is an update to vbulletin then you may need to re-edit your edit again. :)

Edit....this won't be done. After thinking about this carefully if any style change or upgrade to vb is performed the auto edit would no longer work and would force the end user to manually edit it anyway.

I think that is a great idea. Allowing you to add or replace the icons.
The only area I have added any icons is the admin area. I don't want to add them any where else until I get this resolved. Here is a pic.

Looks like you did a "replace" instead of an "add after"....recheck your forumhome_forumbit_level2_post template and see if you have the following:
<img src="{vb:stylevar imgdir_statusicon}/{vb:raw forum.imageprefix}forum_{vb:raw forum.statusicon}-48.png" class="forumicon" id="forum_statusicon_{vb:raw forum.forumid}" alt="" />

probably he means if you click on the icon,it will bring up the forum. or perhaps all unread posts in that forum (would be useful).
Also, I'm specifying that I want my 90x30px icons to be allowed to be 90px in the mod (you say the default is 48)...however it's not observing that. I set it at 90px, I hit save, and it remains at 48px.
issue?

recall, if you currently double click a forum icon (originals) it will mark all new posts in that forum as read. You should add this (or replicate the original function) to your mod.

This is actually only when you select "Under Forum Title". I will update the mod so it works for all locations.

New version just released. I made changes to provide more granular image sizing (width and height) and added css positioning relative to top so the icon can be centered when using smaller than 48x48px icons. All images will work with the icon size not like earlier versions.
Mark forums read will be coming in a later version.

good changes. I'll updated in a sec.
also, noticed that the icons work when looking at the full forum index, like here:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/
but if you bring up an individual forum category (in this case, teamplayer media), the icon's aren't shown for the forum categories.

I figured it was, and I was going to try this. I would assume you'd want everyone to know of this, since I'd think most people woudl want an icon to be present anytime that forum has an icon next to it (index, category, and subforum view, etc).
Also, what about opacity in regards to read/unread posts? That's one of the other functions of those icons (like doubleclicking to mark as read) that most people are going to want. I know my users are already asking about it. Please add such an ability.

Opacity is already there and I will add it to the next version where you can change it. I already added the changes to leve1_post in the file attached when I posted the fix for you.
As for the read/unread I need to figure out what vb is doing and add this functionality, it will come just need to spend some time on it.

I installed this earlier today "before" the new update and am having some problems getting the icons to show next to the main icon. If I replace the icon, all seems well, but for some reason I cant get them to show next to the icon.
Do I need to update counters or optimize any tables before I see these?

INSTALLED & NOMINATED!
Great work with this mod Dark Wizard!:D
I installed this mod on my test board and everything work out fine on the first try. I like the site you listed, iconspedia.com but I decided on creating my own transparent png images. I made a slight change however on where I wanted the cat-icon to show. Take a look at the attached image below.
I wanted the icons I made to float over the default status icons of vB. I know a bit weird LOL. But if you notice in the attached image below, the vB status icon still works of course and pretty much shows if a thread contains new posts or not. It shows really good behind the icons I created.
Again, thanks for this mod!
Note:
Testing on the latest versions of IE8, FF, Chrome and Safari. Installed on vB v4.03

Actually it's an issue with IE. FF, Opera and Safari are not the problem. If you look at your templates, look at what vb has done, they have css templates specifically for IE. :(

vBulletin sets the div size, the only way to do it would be to redo your CSS completely for those templates....it would require alot of work.
I wouldn't suggest icons larger than 60x60 pixels. Sorry.

Please... no more template changes for a while. ;)
I did make one change for my site that you might want to add in the next version though. In the "old posts" section of each template edit, I added this to the 'alt='
{vb:rawphrase forum_contains_no_new_posts}
That way there is something there when you mouseover the icon. Users might think there is nothing there when there are new posts if they don't see anything there on mouseover when there are no new posts.
Also, are the icons centered automatically now? I left the settings at default and they are centered vertically now.

I followed the vb standard when indicating posts but I can add that in the next version. Icons by default should (I use that term lightly as I have no control over other hacks.) be centered if left at default. The next version will also allow for the lock icon when indicating locked posts.
Boofo
06-22-2010, 02:59 PM
They are centered horizontally on vertically now at default. Before I had to add some padding for the vertical setting. That is why I was curious if you had changed something to cause it to center vertically now.
The no new posts idea was just for users who are not used to not seeing the default icons.

The lock ions work as advertised, Bob. Nice add-on. I do have a question, though. Shouldn't the icons show without transparency to unregistered users? They are showing the default 50% for unregistered users.
EnderNolan

I went live with them today. Some members have asked if they can turn them off. Maybe a feature that allows members to activate or deactivate them at their discretion. Nothing that has to be added immediately, but just a thought.
Also, maybe if you could make it so you could set the icon location for each skin, one skin have them replace the status icon and another under the forum title, for example.
Also, what does this feature adjust in the options settings?
Forum/SubForum Category Icon Positioning
Set this option to specify which Category Icon is to be positioned.
I've set it to all of the options and I don't see any change.

Hmmm, style dependant, I would have to think that one out. As for member activate/deavtivate which piece are you talking about?
The "Forum/SubForum Category Icon Positioning" is just that, it allows you to specify which one you are needing to re-position in case of a hack you are using that is causing them to skew off a bit. 99.9% of the time this option won't be needed but is there just in case. ;)

Yes, Boofo is correct. While I like this mod, some of the members felt it was too 'busy' for their liking. As such, they wanted to know if they could turn off the feature. Right now, I think to work around it, I will create duplicate skins and leave the code out of one version so they can select a skin that doesn't have this feature in the code.
Boofo
06-23-2010, 09:45 PM
The only bad thing about that is if they visit other forums that have this mod, they will expect the same treatment in return. I, for one, won't use something like that as when they get used to certain icons for certain areas, it will actually be easier for them to get around the forums.

I think this is the best option, just use the same skin but rename it and let the members choose. To code something like this would take considerable time which I am not really willing to put into this mod as I have already added many, many features that surpass the others. Sorry.
Just installed, works great!
Only suggestion I have at this point is a way to make it so that the icons are theme specific. Right now they dump into the /images folder. I'd like it to be /images/{theme} so I can have different icons per theme. Not a huge issue really though. =)
Installed and all that good stuff.

I was referring to only the transparent part of it, the rest needs to stay the same. The icons shouldn't be transparent for unregistered users as they don't have the read markers, do they?
Correct. Will change it in next version. Check your PM soon as I am going to send you one...

Only suggestion I have at this point is a way to make it so that the icons are theme specific. Right now they dump into the /images folder. I'd like it to be /images/{theme} so I can have different icons per theme. Not a huge issue really though. =)
Nice idea...not sure how to implement it since developers that design skins, styles etc...put their status icons into different locations i.e. images/skin name/statusicon or cpstyles/skin name/statusicon. There is no consistency....
One way is to move the icons to a folder under the statusicon folder and then set it in the forum manager per style/skin...let me think on this a bit.
Anyone else looking for this feature?

No, they can just name the icons according to the skin. Like for styleid 3, you would name the icons iconname_3. I like the directory how it is now.

"Auto Templates" means that the mod will do the edits for you so all you need to do is revert the templates back since you are using an older version, then select "Yes" to "Auto Templates" in the settings and it replaces the contents with what is needed in the templates through a plugin.

In the options you can set the size in width and height and the default value is 48x48 pixels.
As for forum by forum not sure I really want to do that now as it would require more coding and forcing anyone wanting to update to make changes again...if it's a big request then I will do it.

I would suggest clarifying the instructions for those with previous versions installed.
Simply revert the modified templates to their originals, import the product (allowing overwrite), and then go into the options menu for the mod, and select auto-template edits. Save. Done.

??. What is not working? Did you read the instructions, warnings and notes? If you selected "Auto Templates" and have modified your forumhome_forumbit_level1_post & forumhome_forumbit_level2_post templates then you need to do the manual edits instead as outlined in the install.html included with the mod.
Please do not post "It's not working" without more info, I cannot read your mind.

If your templates aren't modded try the "Auto Templates", if after you try that and have selected icons for the forums and don't see anything then you would need to do the edits manually as outlined in the install.html file.
First, this is a wonderful modification and I've already nominated it for MOTM.
Second, when I double click on a forum's icon, it marks all the forums' posts read, not only one forum.
Note: I've chosen "replace status icons" and "category Icon As Status Icon" options.
Thank you very much.

Hello friend! I have a big doubt. I installed the mod.
Now I have icons now
Where the climb and that folder? Or if I have to create one.
2 ? I have the configuration only in "vBulletin Options -> Forum Category Icons" But I see no options to put an icon for each forum or in the right pane does not appear.
And forumhome_postbit1 and postbit2 modifications, which appear in the "install.txt" give me errors on the subject, so I reverted.
I wonder where is the option to put an icon for each forum and replace any that is by default.
Thank you very much, I await your response.

You need to create the folder you want for your icons as outlined in the install.html file and then set it in the options. Adding an icon to the forum is done when you edit the forum and you will see it at the bottom.

Hi Dark Wizard,
Love hack you've made, Keep up the good work.
Is there anyway to change to main domain name?
I would like to serve the icons from a cookieless domain.
http://mysite.com/images/
to lets say
http://images.static.com/images/
Just need the icons served from another address if this is possiable.
Thankyou for your time.
