It is mostly working for me on a vBulletin 4.1.11 board. I am able to apply icons to all of the subcategories, but the top level categories doesn't ahve the option to add an icon from the Forum Manager page.

For those who are claiming that it's not working on newer versions of VB, have you tried applying it to subcategories?

Yet up until 4.1.10 when you had a Subforum you could have an icon for it, I am not talking about on the main Forum page, when you clicked on a Forum which had a sub forum, the icon would show within that Forum for the sub forum.

I fully understand about the sub forum icons not showing on the main Forum home page, but within a Forum from the main Forum Home page , the sub forums did have icons before, so this was added from day one with this mod.
This stopped working for 4.1.10 onward.

So this mod is no longer working as it was, there must have been some slight code change in a Template for 4.1.10 and above.
I am sure a lot of us would appreciate If and when you have time to update this mod.

Great mod

I have created my picture size of width 400px & hight of 63px with the maximum opacity (10%) to create a backdrop picture that spans all the forum section. Whilst this looks great im unable to click the forum link text to read the forum. Is there any work around for this?

Is there perhaps a way of adding z-index as a work around?

Dark_Wizard, would you try to have a look and see why it doesn't show for Sub Forum icons within an actual Forum as per it did before 4.1.10 please.
There must have been some code changes for the Templates for the Sub Forums after 4.1.10 I'd think, that's why it stopped working.

I just installed this on 4.1.12 and it works great. I had to use the manual install but I'm sure that's due to my custom templates.

One thing that seemed rather odd: I only see the icon option in the Forum Manager when I am creating a new forum. It does not show up for existing forums. Is this a bug or by design? My site is still in the development phase so it's not a big deal as I can recreate the forums without losing posts but it may be an issue for existing sites.

One other thing: Because you cannot see the icon option on existing forums this means that once you assign an icon you cannot change it unless you rename the icon and name a new one with the old icon name.

I think we are all going around in circles with our posts about the mod.

It's like I said a few pages back.
This mod works great, all versions of vB including the latest 4.2.0 Beta.

But from 4.1.10 this mod stopped showing images for Sub Forums.
I don't mean on the MAIN Forum page, as the icon shown for Sub Forums there is just a very small icon.
But when you click on a forum category which has a Sub Forum in it, the icon within that sill not show the custom icon you set for it, this is from 4.1.10 and after.

And that's about it, this modification wok on all vB Forums right up t0 4.2.0 But the Subforums stopped showing the icons you set them to show from 4,1,10, before they did, as I have a 4,1,3 forum working showing this and then a test forum at 4.1.12 and 4.2.0 showing they stopped the icons.

I just created a forum and assigned an icon to it. That worked fine. Then I created a sub forum and tied it to the first forum and assigned an icon to the sub forum with this mod and that also worked. And this is in 4.1.12

So I don't know why you're having problems.


BY the way...my prior post was incorrect. I can see the icon option on existing forums that were created after this mod was installed. Older forums will not show the icon option if they were created prior to installing this mod. This is certainly understandable.

In the forum manager. When creating or editing a forum you specify the Parent Forum in the first section.

Example, go to www.vbulletin.com/forum/
You will see a Forum called: vBulletin Announcements
Then you will see this Sub Forums attached within that Forum such as:
eBulletins & Press Releases
So when you are actually here: https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forumdisplay.php/1-vBulletin-Announcements
Those Sub-Forum icons are the ones which stopped showing custom icons after 4,1,10, before 4,1,10 the icons you had added would show, now they don't.

This is what I have been talking about for weeks if not months now.
It can't be a big thing, just some kind of Template code change or hook or something after 4.1.10 came out, I just wish it could get fixed

The way you have your Categories/Forums set up half way down the site is really strange to say the least, nothing like most of us, including vBulletin.com, have ours set up.

Check you 'depths' of the Forums in the Options setting in the admin panel, this is why Sub Forum don't show, you have to get the number set right.

If you check the 3rd and 4th screen shot that Dark_Wizard provides for the mod you will see that he set up the category forum exactly like I did where it appears as a section ("This section contains....). So if my layout is "wrong" then his must be "wrong" as well.

Try to keep an open mind. There are more ways to set up a site then your way. Don't ridicule others just because you don't agree with them.

As for the screen shots from DW, they show the same as how most vB forums are set up, your bottom half of your Forum isn't set up like his screen shots.

This works great for me on 4.2.0. It resizes the images in my subforums just fine. The only issue I do seem to be having is that it won't change the icon for just two forums I have as links. The other links I have has changed but, for some reason, those other two won't.

I have been using this mod for a long time. Besides altering where I store the icons (moved to a static site) and some weird "png" file extension thing, it has worked flawlessly, even on sub-forums. I do not recall messing with any of his code there. It has been a great mod for us... Thanks DarkWizard.

Note - We are running v4.2 and have 2 levels of nested sub-forums.

It does work on sub forums but it depends on how you set up the sub forums. I tried to explain that in post 595 but was promptly told I wasn't setting up the forums in the "normal" way (as if there is a mandatory way in which to set up your web site). If you read my posts you will see how I set it up.

Some folks need to learn how to think outside the box.

Ok, as I will be upgrading to 4.2.0 and this mod will save me so much time for the images if it worked with Sub Forums as it did before 4.1.10
I will pay $15 so anyone who can get this modification to work as per it should.

There is no rule that says you cannot modify someone elses code on your own site, thats perfectly legal and acceptable.
What you cannot do is release the changed version in public as a complete thing. However, its also perfectly ok to post a list of changes - i.e find this ..., change to this ...

Here's another example where I removed the commas and have all the sub forums on the same line with the subforum titles centered under the subforum icons. I also changed the link so the icons are hot links to the subforums just like the titles.

I think this one looks better than my first example.

Here are my changes. I suggest you make a copy of your original code first as I am not responsible for any changes to your forums you make.

To display the sub forum icons:

Styles & Templates>Search In Templates>forumhome_subforums

Look for this line of code:

<a href="{vb:link forum, {vb:raw row}}">{vb:raw row.title}</a>{vb:raw row.comma}

and replace it (comment it out - I don't like to hard delete) with this code:

<div style="width:65px;">
<center><a href="{vb:link forum, {vb:raw row}}"><img src="images/{vb:raw vboptions.forumiconimg_folder}/{vb:raw row.forumiconimg}" /><br>{vb:raw row.title}</a></center>
</div>

That's all there is to it. Note that I left off the comma between subforums. If you want that then include "{vb:raw row.comma}" after "</a>". Also I included a <div> to control the width of the icon display and a <center> to center the title below the icon.

I also added a line break at the top of forumhome_subforums to add a line between the forum and sub forums.

If you want to control how many subforums are displayed on each line (I limit it to 4) then do this:

At the top of forumhome_subforums add this:

Try scanning for "{vb:rawphrase subforums}:" but make sure it's the one you want because that heading is also displayed in the sub heading when you click on the main forum and I don't know iof you want that one displayed or not.

I am sorta of new at this so bare with me. I have the newested version of VB and I installed your mod. I can get it to work on first level forums. I just can not get it to work on my second and third level subforums.

I thought what you posted on post 677 included a fix for this, so I tried the first method you talked about and I still can not get it to work.

Looks like you might be missing an ending quote or terminating tag just prior to "<img" I would check that code again

I'm note sure what you're talking about. My change works for all levels. I just added a test sub forum then added another test forum one level below the first test sub forum. The icons displayed fine for each forum on each level.

So i have the mod working for my sub forums but i can not add an icon to the main forum? Am I doing something incorrect? any help would be appreciated.

Hey All,
So I wanted to use this but when you had a Category > Category > Subforum layout the images would not properly showup (actually they wouldn't at all).

There was a post on "how to fix it" but then my problem was that the images were not correctly displaying.

I spent 3-4 hours fixing it (should have been easy but hey im not coder) so if anyone needs - just update your forumhome_forumbit_level1_post template and have it look like this. Should work for default template - I had to go in and copy the code from his XML to figure it out.

It would be nice if you could add this in so subforums would properly work out of the box.

Is there anyway to have a different category image folder for each style?

I don't know much about coding but I feel like its possible to do this. The css code points to the folder you've typed in (in Forum category Settings.) So you should be able to replace that line in the postbit template so that instead of pointing there, it points to a different folder. This way you can edit the postbit template on each one of your styles.

Can anybody help me out with this? It would be extremely useful.

vb 4.2.0

When logged in these look outstanding
When not logged in, unregistered, the icons are large and for the most part unviewable. The lock icon looks good, large but good

Basically they are not resizing the images when not logged in which makes no sense to me.

Thoughts?

Seeing as "Developer Last Online: Sep 2012" I wouldn't count on the developer changing the mod anytime soon.

I have posted numerous posts (look at posts 672 thru 677) with screen prints and code examples explaining how to apply very simple fixes to have the mod work for sub forums as well as displaying the forum & sub forum icon at the top of a thread. Check my posts

Did you specify the folder name in the Options>Forum Category Icon settings?

Also, for some reason it would not list my images if they were any type except png. It would not accept gif or jpeg . What type are your images? Try one as png

Here are my changes. I suggest you make a copy of your original code first as I am not responsible for any changes to your forums you make.

To display the sub forum icons:

Styles & Templates>Search In Templates>forumhome_subforums

Look for this line of code:

and replace it (comment it out - I don't like to hard delete) with this code:

That's all there is to it. Note that I left off the comma between subforums. If you want that then include "{vb:raw row.comma}" after "</a>". Also I included a <div> to control the width of the icon display and a <center> to center the title below the icon.

I'm afraid this doesn't work because of the plugin "VSa - Sub-Forum Manager" is replacing the sub-category codes.
