View Full Version : Add-On Releases - [AJAX] Helpful Answers - Allow users to rate individual posts

Helpful Answers has been used to record over 6 MILLION times on more than 2,000 forums. If you're not using HA your users are looking for it!
Every day your users contribute hundreds if not thousands of posts making it hard for new members and guests to separate out the best answers from those that are less helpful. The Helpful Answers System offers your members a quick way to rate individual posts as either helpful or not allowing future visitors to understand the value of each post.
Designed to be flexible, HA has over 30 configurable settings:
Use image or text ratings AJAX or traditional links.
Offer yes/no or scaled 1-10 point ranking.
Turn off negative ratings for a positive only system.
Decide which forums are open for helpful answer ratings.
Audit the system and identify top users and potential abusers.
Ban specific members from using the system.
Customize the message shown after a post is rated.
Show a page with the top helpful posts.
Show rating stats on a user's profile.
Hide posts that rate "too low"
Template driven so you can customize it all for your forum.For advanced users template conditionals and variables let you further extend the functionality to color highlight good or bad posts, include ratings in user?s profiles and much more.
Modification Installation [Must Read]:
Step 1: Upload the addon files found in the upload/ folder to your forum directory
Step 2: Install the plugin through your vB Administration area
Step 3: Configure settings & enable the mod in individual forums
You must configure settings & enable forums before voting will show up.
Anonymous Stats Tracking (optional):
By default this addon will pass basic rating data (positive or negative) to a 3rd party site for statistical purposes. Only the most basic data is captured (the vote and your site name) and no user information or specific forum details are logged, not even an IP address. You can disable this through the admin.
Mod Philosophy -- Drive Your Own Success:
All of my mods are inspired by my work in digital marketing and are designed to drive registrations, interaction or other engagement activities the core platform does not address.
Each is designed to fit a general need by providing a starting point but it's on you to decide how to make things work to their best possible outcome. Feel free to suggest what you'd like to see next but don't wait to have what everyone else has; figure out what your forum needs and customize away.

Moving this mod to below the signature line:
1. Enable Manual Template Placement
2. Find the code:
{vb:raw template_hook.postbit_signature_end}
</div>
</vb:if>
3. Add {vb:raw helpful_answers} below this line
Tips & Tricks Using Template Variables:
{vb:raw post.totalrank} - The total number of ratings
{vb:raw post.goodrank} - The number of good ratings
{vb:raw post.badrank} - The number of bad ratings
{vb:raw post.helpfulgood} - True if the post is positive overall (more good than bad ratings)
{vb:raw post.rate_helpfulanswer} - True if the user can rate the post (false if they are banned or have rated it).
{vb:raw post.helpfulanswerid} - True if the user has already rated the post.

The user? This variable does not exist at this time... You could run a query to fetch it.

I'm using legacy as well, but it really shouldnt matter. I think we need to include the variable $helpful_answers but I don't know how. Not sure just putting {vb:raw helpful_answers} is doing what we need it to. Ted will show us the way.

Correction for manual placement...?
Moving this mod to below the signature line:
1. Enable Manual Template Placement
2. Find the code: {vb:raw template_hook.postbit_signature_end}
3. Add {vb:raw helpful_answers} below this line
Should instead read:
1. Enable Manual Template Placement
2. Find the code:
{vb:raw template_hook.postbit_signature_end}
</div>
</vb:if>
3. Add {vb:raw helpful_answers} below these lines
...otherwise whether the voting shows up is dependent on whether that user has a signature displayed.

OMG I can't believe it, I was just checking my forum settings and it wasn't turned on, lol How stupid was that... I'm very sorry for that, cheers it works now.. for others you must go into your admincp - Forum & Moderators - Forum Manager, then select which forum you wish and down at the bottom click to enable, then save...

Hi,
I'm seeing a problem.
It turns out that VB4 Helpful Answers - 2.1.2.zip in the first message that is displayed once, if under the scroll to the second message, VB4 Helpful Answers - 2.1.2.zip, is shown twice, if the page has 10 Posts The VB4 Helpful Answers - 2.1.2.zip, increases until the message 10 and show 10 times.
You can see in the picture ...
Please how to solve this?

Please try this version and be sure the template helpful_answers_top is reverted and not using any customizations which would stop it from updating.

Each user? No. The user who is viewing it, yes. Just enabe the 10 point voting scale and add your star images for values 1-5.
Sorry I am running a product review forum. Don't know if you could add some add ons like - only the user who made the post can rate the product with a post once from a scale of 1-5. An option for only the owner of the post to rate with stars. Thx!

Mate when a coder, like yourself sorts stuff out, faith plays a big part in our trust.
Yet again , great fix. No issues at all. Love it.
Now question for you please.
Is it at all possible to embed a background Image, and sit the Yes/no images on top ?

Also daft question.
Is there a reverse system.
For example.
Thread starter posts really useful stuff. So the Helpful answer system appears just on the very first post, and then viewers can click helpful yes or no, but the graphic does not appear on subsequent replies.

Just noted when we look at source code.
Output code for helpful answers displays.
<div id="helpfulanswers_box_173107" style="text-align:right;"> <br /><hr size="1" style="color:$stylevar[tborder_bgcolor]" /> <strong>Did you find this post helpful?</strong> <a href="http://www.yobromofo.com/forum/./helpfulanswers.php?do=rate&postid=173107&rank=1" onclick="return helpfulanswers_rate(173107, 1);" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://www.yobromofo.com/forum/images/buttons/ha_plus.png" width="18" height="18" border="0" alt="Yes" /></a> |
<a href="http://www.yobromofo.com/forum/./helpfulanswers.php?do=rate&postid=173107&rank=0" onclick="return helpfulanswers_rate(173107, 0);" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://www.yobromofo.com/forum/images/buttons/ha_minus.png" width="18" height="18" border="0" alt="No" /></a> </div>
The part of concern is the /./
This appears in the product file ./helpfulanswers.php
So Is it okay to remove the . from the code associated within the xml file. In a few places.
Cheers Ste

Well took a while fiddling, but managed to tweak it.
I hope Ted doesnt mind, I have amended the product with new hover thumb images. Background image and css styling.
If he agrees I will share the code - I am in no way in Teds league ( so please NOTE you if he agrees use at own risk ), BUT please please note this is my bastardized version, and I cannot guarantee it will work for you. However, if you use the hover thumb method, then my rejigged product file ( if you want it to look like ours ) should work.
The backgroudn image is a png 200px by 200px Could be replaced with anything really.

Sure. The voting block is all done with a template and a few conditionals. You could make an image map, build something with a little table, whatever you like.

I wanted to follow up with a couple of bug reports:
1) In template "helpful_answers_top", replace:
<title>{vb:phrase helpfulanswer_mosthelpful} -- {vb:phrase vboptions.bbtitle}</title>
With:
<title>{vb:phrase helpfulanswer_mosthelpful} -- {vb:raw vboptions.bbtitle}</title>
2) Find:
{vb:raw headinclude}
Add after:
{vb:raw headinclude_bottom}
3) Suggestion: I think the pagenav at the bottom of the same template above looks a bit better with spacing around it. Maybe replace with this:
<vb:if condition="$pagenav">
<br />
<div id="pagination_bottom">
{vb:raw pagenav}
</div>
<br /><br />
</vb:if>
4) I also noticed that all sorting works perfectly on helpfulanswers.php EXCEPT the Average Rating column, which is incorrect in either ascending or descending order.

Possible bug: When I give myself a thumbs up (after allowing this in the settings), I get:
%1$s members found this post helpful
edit: I'm not sure what's wrong but it seems it's not saving my choice on the Rating Display (Select how the rating options should be shown.)
I choose images and it only shows the "Yes" text... this seems to modify whether the bug of %1$s shows or not. In some options it works as intended.
edit again: On further review, the problems seem to originate when I change the "Allow negative responses" setting to "No".

I'm finding this really confusing. It's a great idea but I am not having much luck with it so far.
The first thing is this 2.1.7 version says it's for vb4 but it also says to include "$helpful_answers" into the postbit template. $helpful_answers just shows as $helpful_answers - no substitution happens. Is that the right code? It looks 3.x style rather than 4.

I'm not sure where you saw that instruction as that;s from the vb 3.8 version of the mod. You don't need to add anything to your templates unless you want to move this around -- the addon will automatically place everything right into the post once you enable it in a forum.

The optional reporting tool sends voting data (just sitename + vote) back to this mod for global stats. These are not published or shared in any detail but are simply used to report on the success and impact of this mod in this thread. This feature can be turned off at any time.
You have a much more robust analytics tool included with this mod in your admincp.

Hi Ted, the only other mod I'm running is Blackthorn last 30 pm's. Other than that it's the vb blog and vb cms. This was a new install (I came in to the party on 4.01). The only other things I've done other than altering control panel option settings are I've renamed the admin and mod folders, and I've password protected the renamed folders and also password protected the includes and install folders. I assume this has no effect on the mod? Obviously the files were uploaded to the appropriately renamed folder. The "simple" was this answer helpful yes/no works fine, it's only the 10 point system (the one I really want to use!) that has the problem.

Feature suggestion if you're taking them:
When a post reaches a certain # of ratings, it changes background color (to a user defined color preferrably).
For instance, if 5 people vote +Yes to a user's post, it becomes a light platinum shade that makes it stand out from other posts.
Not sure if it's possible on vb4, but on the previous mod I was using in 3.8 (Post Ranking Stats) it was really helpful to skim quickly a thread and figure out the best posts.
Thanks! Willing to donate a few more bucks if you work this in! =)

The bulk feature is for forums. No sense in bulk enabling threads which change every day...

It says "Threads" in the settings that's why I was confused. :) Gonna try it out now.
Thanks for the help.
