Hi Ted - that worked - only problem is none of the settings in the admincp seem to be affecting anything - for example, the rating display only displays as text despite the setting in the admincp.

What setting do you have for this?

Ted S

I have the same issue, the program shows up, the helpfulanswers.php displays database, the profile seems to be updated, but no graphics, nor no 10 point scale when enabled.

We're gettin' closer :)

So you're just getting the simplified voting option?

I've tried all settings for the rating display and it doesn't change. I also tried turning on 'Manual Template Placement' because I wanted to move it higher anyway, and there was no effect.

Assuming you mean just text, yes.
As stated the AdminCP options don't seem to have an effect, changing to 10 point, or any non default options, don't seem to grab hold.
Thanks for your time.

Ok, fixed the voting options... looks like 4.0.4 requires all variables to be localized, very strange thing to change without making huge mention but so be it.

Let's give 2.3.2 beta2 a run...

Is this just a 4.0.4 compatibility update or does it include the proposed updates?

One thing, the calc for the 10 point scale, when you look at the results is just off by one decimal. See below:

I planned to install this mod after upgrading to 4.0.4
then 4.0.4 was a mess. decided to skip it.
now it seems it is such a mess that it affects this mod too. really sad.
vB devs need to document these critical changes.

Hello Helpful Answers Mod Users -

A new version of the mod has been posted up to support 4.0.4 and 4.0.5 versions of vBulletin. These versions introduced new changes impacting the display of the voting system which have been resolved. If you are running a version of vb4 older than 4.0.4 please keep using the same version of this mod (2.3.1) that you currently have.

To update please install the new XML file. No other changes are necessary.

And thank you to all HA users, as of this week there have been over 1,000,000 reported votes!

Hi TED..I have successfully installed the mod in 4.0.4 with only one complain...user profile is not showing the rating... actually "http://yourdomainname.com/profile.php?do=helpfulans" link is showing the rating for the user.But normally the link is not available to the users in the user profile. I have to let them know about the link for checking their own rating. Moreover, the other users won't be able to see any other user's rating. Sorry!! but the above mentioned link will show only for the current user. Please fix this out or tell me if i m missing out something...

no, not constant. but never mind that. I have bigger problem.

the collapse post if negative rated is working but kinda broken.
it says to "[...] click expand to view it" but the arrow to the far right is faced upwards instead of downwards.
and clicking it doesn't do anything.

also, the collapse doesn't work on non-legacy post bit and breaks the layout a little.

any idea what could be the problem?

Are you using the hide negative rated posts option?
yes, he was using it. when turned off, it was fixed.

It sounds like your css template modifications have altered the default collapse behavoir or the behavoir in the postbit pages.
can you please elaborate? I have a vB's stock skin (only admin available) and this problem occurs in that too.
To me, it seems like while hiding the post, it is placing the "collapse" button instead of "expand" button.
setting display: none; and display: block; thru firebug works fine. so the problem is placing the wrong button in there.

The hide bit adds a new layer to hide the post. If you have a background you should not use this option.

how about doing it this way:
to hide a post,
li#post_203404 div.postdetails, li#post_203404 div.postfoot {
display: none;
}then in li#post_203404 div.posthead
insert something like this in span.nodecontrols [i just copy pasted the collapse code that i get; it should be the expand code):
<a class="collapse" id="collapse_ppost_203404" href="#top"><img src="images/buttons/collapse_40b.png" alt="" title="Collapse this Post"></a>when clicked, i can just set display: block; to those two div.
when clicked again, set display: none;

hey Ted. I have modified it a bit. I believe this UI (http://banglagamer.com/forums/showthread.php?10230-test) is much better (and simple) than lots of texts.
i have moved it to post footer; after multi quote button.

http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/993/capturez.png

anyways, I have two problems.

It seems post.goodrank is not initialized to 0 (but post.badrank is 0) when a post is not voted (up or down) even once.
so i can never get a /\ 0 | 0 \/ it is always /\ | 0 \/

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/9761/captureagm.png

2nd problem: I'm not sure how I can update the counters and images using ajax.
if you can give me some hint, I'm sure i can manage it.
I have modified the _roll template properly. all it needs to do is update codes according to the template.

So you mean it's blank? Yes. It's not set unless there's a value... simple solution is to edit the plugin to make this variable an INT so if it's empty it goes to 0. This is changed for the next release but you can do it yourself... around like 946

$post['goodrank'] = int($post['goodrank']);

I have modified the _roll template properly. all it needs to do is update codes according to the template.

You need to use the javascript voting code:

<a href="./helpfulanswers.php?do=rate&postid={vb:raw post.postid}&rank=1" <vb:if condition="$vboptions[disable_ajax] != 2"> onclick="return helpfulanswers_rate({vb:raw post.postid}, 1);" </vb:if> rel="nofollow" onmouseover="document.post_{vb:raw post.postid}_up.src='images/buttons/ha_arrowup.gif';" onmouseout="document.post_{vb:raw post.postid}_up.src='images/buttons/ha_arrowup_gray.gif';"><img name="post_{vb:raw post.postid}_up" src="images/buttons/ha_arrowup_gray.gif" width="11" height="20" border="0" alt="{vb:rawphrase helpfulanswer_yes}" /></a>

how about doing it this way:
to hide a post,
li#post_203404 div.postdetails, li#post_203404 div.postfoot {

when clicked again, set display: none;

The post ids are generated dynamically per thread so it's a burden to set this per li.

The css styles for your post will generally still show, i'm looking to see what's getting overriden... vb css is pretty evil.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure where to place it. 946 number line of which file? the main XML? it didn't work :(

sure is - can you share how you achieved this?

I want this!
sure. but let me get it working properly first :)
If Ted feels like, he can even include it in the core product.

You need to use the javascript voting code:

<a href="./helpfulanswers.php?do=rate&postid={vb:raw post.postid}&rank=1" <vb:if condition="$vboptions[disable_ajax] != 2"> onclick="return helpfulanswers_rate({vb:raw post.postid}, 1);" </vb:if> rel="nofollow" onmouseover="document.post_{vb:raw post.postid}_up.src='images/buttons/ha_arrowup.gif';" onmouseout="document.post_{vb:raw post.postid}_up.src='images/buttons/ha_arrowup_gray.gif';"><img name="post_{vb:raw post.postid}_up" src="images/buttons/ha_arrowup_gray.gif" width="11" height="20" border="0" alt="{vb:rawphrase helpfulanswer_yes}" /></a>

The rating, ajax etc...everything is working.
After rating, I get the msg "...thanks for rating...".
But I want to update the counter and arrow images. I'm not sure from where the ajax response text is coming from.
I managed to pull it off :)

The post ids are generated dynamically per thread so it's a burden to set this per li.

The css styles for your post will generally still show, i'm looking to see what's getting overriden... vb css is pretty evil.
then you can try using the already built in post hiding method. the one vB uses for deleted posts. it has a view post button. so you can just reuse that template with a little modification.
then add a hide post button if necessary.

I want this!

Here's what you need to do:

first open the helpfulanswers.php in your forum root.
then comment out the lines shown in image. our objective is to always use helpful_answers_roll.

Then go to admincp > style manager > edit template > help templates > helpful_answers_roll

replace all the code in that template with this:

<vb:if condition="$show['helpfulanswer']">
<span id="helpfulanswers_box_{vb:raw post.postid}">
<span class="seperator">&nbsp;</span>
<vb:if condition="$show['rate_helpfulanswer']">
<a class="rateuppost" href="./helpfulanswers.php?do=rate&postid={vb:raw post.postid}&rank=1" <vb:if condition="$vboptions[disable_ajax] != 2"> onclick="return helpfulanswers_rate({vb:raw post.postid}, 1);" </vb:if> rel="nofollow" >&nbsp;{vb:raw post.goodrank}</a>
<vb:if condition="$vboptions['helpans_neg']">
<span class="seperator">&nbsp;</span>
<a class="ratedownpost" href="./helpfulanswers.php?do=rate&postid={vb:raw post.postid}&rank=0" <vb:if condition="$vboptions[disable_ajax] != 2"> onclick="return helpfulanswers_rate({vb:raw post.postid}, 0);" </vb:if> rel="nofollow" >{vb:raw post.badrank}&nbsp;</a>
</vb:if>
<vb:else />
<vb:if condition="!$show[guest]">
<vb:if condition="$post[yesno]">
<span class="rateuppost_u">&nbsp;{vb:raw post.goodrank}</span>
<vb:if condition="$vboptions['helpans_neg']">
<span class="seperator">&nbsp;</span>
<span class="ratedownpost">&nbsp;{vb:raw post.badrank}</span>
</vb:if>
<vb:else />
<span class="rateuppost">&nbsp;{vb:raw post.goodrank}</span>
<vb:if condition="$vboptions['helpans_neg']">
<span class="seperator">&nbsp;</span>
<span class="ratedownpost_u">&nbsp;{vb:raw post.badrank}</span>
</vb:if>
</vb:if>
</vb:if>
</vb:if>
<vb:if condition="$show['guest'] AND $vboptions['helpans_guestshow']">
<a class="rateuppost" href="./helpfulanswers.php?do=guestrate" rel="nofollow" >&nbsp;{vb:raw post.goodrank}</a>
<vb:if condition="$vboptions['helpans_neg']">

then go to admincp > style manager > edit template > postbit templates > postbit legacy

so after that </vb:if> and before </span>, add
<vb:if condition="$show['helpfulanswer']">

now go to admincp > style manager > edit template > css templates > additional.css

Finally, go to admincp > options > helpful options > enable manual placement.

I have only checked it in legacy postbit.
if you make the similar change in regular postbit, it should work.

NOTE: This layout is NOT for "ten-based" rating.
Please remember to backup your database before trying. and I'm not responsible if anything goes wrong.

edit: you need to extract the arrow_mini.zip in /images/buttons directory.

Ok one last question, what bit of CSS do I need to change to make the non-rolled over arrows have my darker footer background. From the screenshot you can see that the background is lighter, the rollover color is correct.

Thanks.

refer to the postbit legacy modification i posted.
there I asked you to place a code after </vb:if> and before </span>.
if you notice, there is another <span> right after that </span>.
move that piece of code right after this <span>.

only goodrank is blank. badrank is 0.
Once voted (up or down), it becomes available.

Ok but can you tell me how to fix it? for now, hidden posts are impossible to display.
Clicking the "arrow" doesn't show anything.

For the 0, in the XML file go to if(!$this->registry->options['helpans_manual']){

Above this add:

$post['goodrank'] = int($post['goodrank']);

I'm not sure why they are not expanding, as it works fine on my test site and several live sites. now it doesn't but the collapse still works.

Ted: Can I request a feature? What's the possibility of building in a script that shows each user that has weighed in on a post directly under the post (exactly how the Post Thank You hack does). Possibly divided in half so one side shows good and one side shows bad or something.

Everyone on my forum is pissing and moaning about this so I figured it was worth asking if it could be added.

Thanks!

The feature lets you pick the number of votes, just be sure you set this in your admin options.

Yeah I understand that part clearly...I think you missed the main problem though ;) Any time a post is voted negatively and it collapses, every single post below it in the thread disappears as well/collapses, and there is no way to view them then because if you click the button to view the post, it only shows you the original collapsed post.

edit: I should say, none of this matters if we can get the 'top post block' back and running in this version :) I just want to have either my members be able to find what they need quickly, or to not have to see the crap. How is this coming along?

Have you customized your postbit / legacy template in a way that may have removed the last template hook or added a spare div? It sounds like the first <div> to hide the post is working, but the second one to tell the page when to stop hiding isn't there...

Awesome, set me up with a donation link and i'll gladly help you out. This rating system literally calms my board. They are rabid football fans.

How hard would it be to code the collapsing of posts based on a NET total for votes? Reason I ask is because some people just are idiots and don't like certain people, and will always rate them down. I have one poster who could post a really good write up and he would have +40/-10. I can set it to -9 to collapse at -10...but I don't want a post with +40 and a net of +30 to be hidden.

Basically what was mentioned before,

- Exclude certain usergroups from voting
- Exclude negative reputations from voting
- Follow VB reputation user spread option rules
- Voting per day based on usergroup or exempt Administrators
- Hide posts with low ratings

That would make it perfect :) This is just a personal request but I would like that instead of having the thumbs up / thumbs down disappear for those not allowed to vote it is still there but they get an error that explains why they can't. So if a user is banned from using it, or doesn't have enough posts, the thumbs up/down doesn't just disappear but they are reminded with a message why they can't use it or need more posts to use it.

It can be admin defined.

1 show user names
2 show user names with votes
3 show user names for members; show user names with votes for moderators

for 1, have a box with small text size and comma list all user names.
for 2, place two box with small text size and comma list all user names accordingly.
for 3, combine 1 and 2 and simple template if condition.

Ahh, I thought the "Enable Most Helpful Post Block" option was to put a post block after the first post, and have like the top 3 or so rated posts. I misread it...it says the same as the "Get Top Post per Thread" block. Would be a great feature ;)

Version 2.3.3 is now live for vB 4.0.4 and 4.0.5 and adds in a top rated post option.

Coming next... a scheduled task to close low rated threads.

Got other ideas? Share them for a future update.

I'd like to see CvP's post display mod as an actual built-in selectable display option. :) I can't update without having to redo it every time.

Ted - can the $toppost['postid'] = $threadinfo['postid'] be used to highlight the post?

Top 3, Top 5, whichever...heck make it an admin option..maybe 3 is too little for some people. Or just have it be a certain rating to be in there.

Only other option is the post rating to be done on a net total, since I have a problem with people getting voted +40 and -10, and if I have collapse set to -10 it gets collapsed. I'd rather just set posts to collapse at a NET of -3 and call it good.

Ted - can the $toppost['postid'] = $threadinfo['postid'] be used to highlight the post?

Actually - I figured this out too. Had to register the variable with postbit...

Added
vB_Template::preRegister('postbit_legacy', array('toppost' => $toppost['postid']));

After
$template_hook['showthread_above_posts'] .= $templater->render();

In Helpful Answers -- Query To Get Votes & User Vote History

Then added
<vb:if condition="$toppost == $post['postid']">Rated most helpful post - </vb:if>

Before
<a name="post{vb:raw post.postid}" href="{vb:link thread, {vb:raw thread}, {vb:raw pageinfo_post}}#post{vb:raw post.postid}"

in postbit_legacy

For anyone interested with the above I also figured out how to highlight the top post...

Here's what it looks like: http://nikonites.com/feedback-suggestions/803-can-we-make-site-more-interactive.html

Assuming you're using postbit_legacy:

Edit template postbit.css:
After

.postbitlegacy .postbody, .eventbit .eventdetails .eventbody {
margin-{vb:stylevar left}: {vb:stylevar postbitlegacy_userinfo_width};
border-{vb:stylevar left}: {vb:stylevar postbit_userinfo_border};
background: {vb:stylevar postbit_background};
_background-image: none;
padding-bottom: 1em;
}

Add

.postbitlegacy .postbody.toppost {
background: #F0FFF0;
}

In postbit_legacy
After
<div class="postbody

Add
<vb:if condition="$post['threadid'] AND $toppost == $post['postid']">toppost</vb:if>

So the line will look like this:
<div class="postbody <vb:if condition="$post['threadid'] AND $toppost == $post['postid']">toppost</vb:if>">

The above (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=2078177&postcount=632) must be done for this to work.

I'm sure this was asked someone else, but i can't seem to find it.

Is there any way or allowing the user to change their vote?
For example, if I like a post, and then the poster changes the content, I'd like the ability to revoke my like, or at the very least, dislike the new post.

Thanks. Great Mod. Site is almost done.

For the next version could we get it so that for the minimum post check the helpful answers block does not disappear, it instead shows an error when clicked informing the user that their post count is not yet high enough?

With the minimum post check the way it is, people think there is an error that it does not show.

Ted - Any update on when it will be able to collapse posts based on the NET rating? Like I've said before, the current system is good but causes problems on active forums where posts that are read by a lot of people may get a +40/-10 and be collapsed. I can't set that to collapse at -10 though because posts on less read forums may be at +5/-6 and not collapse or just +0/-6 and not collapse. Having it collapse on just a net total would be great.

Hi Ted, this mod is very similar to what I'm looking for. I was wondering if there is a way to make it do what the "Judge it" feature does on Topix's forum. To see what I mean just check out this thread on Topix, and the link above everyone's posts that says "Judge it"

http://www.topix.com/forum/city/kingsville-tx/T709DVIR5S4V7A4IP

The "Judge it" uses rating by making different judges with fun images people can select for a certain post, and when someone selects a "judge" for the post it will say above the post what judges people have selected for that post, with the images of the judges there.

I think this would be fun mod that a lot of forum owners would love, including the ability of the admin to make their own kinds of judges for people to be able to select.

Yep! Doesn't matter if I use a custom image, the default thumbs up image or the arrows or hovers, it shows that " /> (including the quotes).

The alt text for the image also says "alt src=" and nothing else. It's pretty weird.

Other than that, the plugin works, I've modified the text option to use my custom thumbs up image, but it's very strange behavior. I'd like to use the hover option with images, but I'll use my "hack" in the meantime.

any possibility to do a feature in a future release where you can set a different help topic for different threads and forums.
For example you could set helpful answers to work on forums or threads you have dedicated to music,movies,games or whatever and set separate topics and questions per forum instead of just "Did you find this post helpful".
So you could do something like "Did you like this movie" for a movie thread or forum and "Did you like this game or review" for a gaming thread/forum.

I think that a feature like that could make this the ultimate rating system,especially if the helpfulanswers.php page was divided into those categories and instead of post# of top posts like you have now maybe you could use the post title if the user made one,so a user could make their post the movie or game or whatever title and helpfulanswers.php would say something like

Movie - Get Him to the Greek - in thread: Rate This Movie Thread - forum title - rating blah blah
instead of
post - 55342 - in thread: Rate This Movie Thread - forum title - rating blah blah
like it does now

I tried to explain that as best I could and here's an image of the forum manager where helpful answers enabler setting are, to give you a better idea what I mean I added a bit to the image.

Hum. If all you wanted to change was the question and not the style (i.e. always have pos & neg votes or just pos) you could tweak things fairly easily to localize the questions to forums either with conditionals (for a few forums) or a new variable (for lots of forums).

FROM reputation,user WHERE user.userid=reputation.whoadded) AS reputationbit ON reputationbit.postid = post.postid";

I'd like to throw my vote in the hat for at least option 1 above.

Something below the signature that read something like:

The following 4 users found this post helpful: George, Sue, Pat, Rich

With linkable usernames.

One of the collateral benefits of a Thanking or Helpful Answers system is the useless "I agree with you completely" post. It allows for more focused answers rather than a Ditto. Furthermore, some of my users use the Post Thanks hack to let people know that they read their post about some event in their lives and are happy for them.

I want to Thank You for this very useful addon and don't want to seem ungrateful for the suggestion. I'll use it either way but I'd like to de-anonymize the helpful feature for many reasons (Admin selected). It would be great to be able to go into a profile of a member you trust and just search for the posts they find helpful.

I'd like to throw my vote in the hat for at least option 1 above.

Something below the signature that read something like:

The following 4 users found this post helpful: George, Sue, Pat, Rich

With linkable usernames.

Part of what I like is the anonymity as if users are shown they will no longer use the negative rating aspects of it. Anonymity even allows friends to keep friends in check with neg rep clicks.

My only issue is that certain users abuse this and will continually neg rep the same person.

Well, like I said, it would be nice to be Admin controlled. I like to know who found a post helpful. I'm not turning on the thumbs down thing as I want people to have to articulate their disagreement to a post whereas agreement or finding something helpful can be noted and pare down the size of a thread. I've had some posts with as many as 80 users Thanking it which dramatically cuts down on thread length if everyone Posted "Thank You."

I installed this according to the instructions, it's enabled in all forums, the "Manual Template Override" is set to NO.... but it's not appearing anywhere on the forum.

A friend is having the exact same issue on his forum too.

We are running vb4.0.6 and downloaded the 404 file for this mod.

No, I thought that was optional and not necessary. Is that needed to get it working/visible (referring to the template edit mentioned in first post of thread)?

Thanks Ted ... :)

Before I venture down the road of installing this in our 4.04 site, two questions for either you, or perhaps others can answer them ...

1. Can this mod peacefully co-exist with the very popular "Thank You" mod? Any reported problems? If so, is it logical to have both running simultaneously, or would that create confusion amongst users?

2. We have years of the add-on mod "Thank You" records from members in tens of thousands of posts built up on our site. I think our members would freak if they disappeared by turning that mod off suddenly. Has anyone ever thought about writing a conversion mod that would take those records for each post and convert each "thank you" to a "Thumbs Up" vote for the post, essentially preserving the historical perspective for members of old posts?

Thanks again for your work ... appreciate it ... :up:

Love the mod - thanks!

It was working great on my site.. then i switched from litespeed to apache w/ mod_security and get this error if a thumbs up/down is clicked:

Warning: curl_setopt() [function.curl-setopt]: Invalid curl configuration option in [path]/helpfulanswers.php on line 483

Line 483 is:
curl_setopt($curlHandle, CURLOPT_MUTE, 1); // dont show output

If you reload the page it shows that your helpful vote registered, and the error is gone.

I'm running v2.3.3 - latest version..

Any ideas?

Badger,

I've been running the Post Thank You hack for years as well. What I did was leave the Thank You hack installed but set the threshold for new Thanks to a post number way above what anyone can reach. By doing so, all the previously thanked posts still have who thanked them. The two addons co-exist fine.

I could have left the Post Thank You hack available to Thank New Posts as well as have the users find a post helpful but I opted to switch over users to Helpful Posts.

I really liked the Post Thank You hack but the author has pretty much abandoned it and some of the old features like the ability to see what posts a user has been thanked for look like they're not going to be available for vB4.

I think the Helpful Answers switchover will be better in time as it has so many advantages to displaying the Helpful Posts within a thread. I also think the author of this hack has found a nice way to parlay Open Source in a way that it is in his interest to support it long term whereas Post Thanks relies on the good will of users to support his continued coding (something that is sadly very rare).

Makes sense ....

When you say you set the "post number" way above, do you really mean Post Count Needed to Give Thanks?

I couldn't find any other reference to a something that would be a quantity of posts.

So, essentially, the thanks icon disappeared for members and your new "Helpful Answers" appeared simultaneously.

Doesn't the Thank You mod have the advantage of being more personalized in that a person sees the individual member's name who left him that positive expression?

Thanks again for your work .. I use almost all of your mods and the are first rate and reliable ... :up:

Badger,

My name is Rich. Ted's the coder of this app but I thought I'd answer your question as a board owner who has gone through the same thing you're going through.

1. Yes, I meant Post Count needed to Give Thanks. I raised the level to 100000
2. Yes, the Post Thank You button and the Helpful Answers thing will appear simultaneously (assuming you don't set Post Count level high as in 1.) Since I raised the Post Count needed to give thanks, users can no longer see the Thanks button but, because the Post Thank You hack is still installed, users can see who thanked posts before I raised the post count needed. In other words, I'm weaning users away from the Post Thanks and, in a couple of years, I'll probably just uninstall the Post Thanks hack altogether.
3. Yes, right now the Post Thank You hack allows you to see who thanked the poster but Ted just noted that he was going to mod this application to make this an option for the Helpful Answers product. It will completely replace everything good about Post Thanks when he does that.

As for your previous question about importing old Thanks Data into the Helpful answers hack, I'm sure it could be done with some sort of SQL query but I'm not sophisticated enough to know how to do that.

Can users who are not registered rate specific forum posts?

Also I would like to ask you to consider a feature where if a user is not registered and wants to rate a specific post, he/she should use reCaptcha to verify their identity.

Also another things to consider is that allow only up to X number of pposts they can rate.

Hey Ted, I was hoping I could convince you to add in the "reputation user spread" variable. I know I have asked before, but I would gladly pay you for this. I just really need this check as people continue to abuse the system to negatively rate the same person over and over. It is becoming a big issue on my board.

- an option to enable it in forums by entering the category ID's

Where exactly can I edit the text color of the mod? I want it to be a bit more transparent or something so it doesn't color clash with the post.

Hey. Thanks for this mod. I'm testing it out on our dev site currently.

I had a couple of suggestions that would help us immensely.

(If these features don't already exist) Can you add a function to disallow rating of posts by administrators/moderators? i.e. People cannot vote posts made by admins and mods, etc (or selectable usergroups).

Also, I would love for there to be an option to "view only helpful posts in thread" or something. For example, if I am using a positive only system, a user could select an option to only view posts that have been rated as helpful, and leave everything else invisible.

The point being (whether using a negative, or positive only system) users who wanted to, could easily cut to the meat of a thread, and ignore the noise by choosing to view only posts in the thread that have been rated helpful (either at all, or an admin set minimum number of positive ratings)

Thanks.
