USC 2.2 has now been released!!!!

Introduction

Following the success of the left and right side column modifications, and building on their weaknesses, the Ultimate Side Columns system was born.

Ultimate Side Columns (USC) is your one stop shop for all your side columns needs. It is an easy to configure, all in one solution.

USC 2.0 was born through the evolution and bug fixing of USC 1.0 for vBulletin 3.6 and is for vBulletin 3.7.0 RC1 and later only. It is not supported with earlier versions and may not work with them.

Features

USC 2.0 is fully customizable, can use conditions and variables (not available in USC 1.0), has greater flexibility in where it can be omitted from (after requests received), and contains new functionality of both independently collapsible columns and user defined custom links to be displayed on a per user basis in the column location of the administrators choosing.

A maximum of 20 blocks spread over the two columns are available at this time. However, if more are required then an expansion pack will be provided. The blocks can be reordered and moved between the templates with ease through simple template edits.

USC 2.1 has additional files. You need to upload the files first BEFORE importing the product

Upgrading from USC 2.0
Upload the contents of the upload folder, except the admincp directory, then import the XML.

Go to vBOptions > USC Options and set the display pages using the new options
Go to Usergroups > Usergroup Manager and set the permissions for each usergroup as desired. By default no permissions are given to any usergroups.

Upgrading from USC 1.0

USC 2.0 has been rewritten from the ground up and therefore all the blocks have been moved from the settings into the templates. Therefore, a unique upgrade script has been provided which must be run before importing the new product. Importing the new product first will result in the loss of your existing USC contents.

The upgrade script is located in the admincp directory after uploading the USC files and is ran by pointing your browser to admincp/usc_upgrade.php

Full upgrade instructions are included in the upgrade readme file in the zip.

Installation Instructions

Download the zip, unzip it and upload the contents of the upload folder to your forum directory. Import the product, all done.

Full instructions are included in the install readme in the zip.

Support

This modification has limited support only and is therefore flagged as unsupported. Support will be given when possible although it is always preferable when users of USC support each other. This was very successful with USC 1.0 and therefore is continued with USC 2.0

If you have any other combinations of pages that you would like to see available for the column options, please post them in the support thread ensuring that you add the title "USC Page Combination Request" to your post, or use this as the first line of your post ensuring that it is in bold text. This is very specific as due to the limited nature of support and time, the support thread will only be quickly skimmed through and therefore requests may be missed if it is not clear what they are.


The screenshots attached to this post and the next one show a range of pages with a range of column combinations. They are not labeled but they are pretty self explanatory.

Problems with your side columns not showing?
For your side columns to show, you need to update your usergroup permissions from the usergroup manager for each usergroup

Awesome, awesome, AWESOME sidebar.

A few things from my experience updating.

I had USC 1.0, followed the instructions perfect, and when I ran the upgrade script, it gave me a db error, and I don't think it allowed it to finish. So I went ahead, and copied all my code that I had previously (just incase it got lost) and proceeded.

Once installed, it worked well, except for the sidebar was showing in the footer, so all I did was remove the old code from the footer, and all is well. Great sidebar, and thanks a ton!

Maybe it would be a good feature to have some page where you can enable default blocks like last x threads (and set parameters like the 'x') and choose if it's got to be on the left or right side column (or both). But well, maybe this would bring the product too far (would almost be a little cms).

Requests were made for some information about vBGallery and no-one responded. As such it cannot be omitted from there unless you are willing and able to provide information about the script.

Omitting other custom pages is not possible unless you know your way around the code and are confident in doing this yourself.

No. It is a side columns script not a middle of the site script.

As per the first post, this does not work on 3.6 and requires a minimum version of vBulletin 3.7.0 RC1. Work on the 3.6 version (USC 1.0) is discontinued and this will not be backported to work with earlier versions. Originally it was not going to be released until 3.7.0 Gold is released, but then I felt nice so I released it now instead of sitting on it for a while.

IF you are running vb 3.7 RC1, then you need to remove the code in the footer, since you didnt run the upgrade script I take it.

Word of advice people. I see all you asking if it runs on 3.6. Freaking READ what Kerry-Anne wrote in the intro post, it's put there for a reason. It's really annoying to see ya'll asking when it says need a MINIMUM of 3.7 RC1.

Use the manual template edit setting. The template edits have been linked to previously, or you can find them in the version 1.0 thread. The instructions will be being updated to include them when an update is released. (I sorta forgot to put them in the package - ooops)

The variables must be global. if they are not global they will not work.

In the zip file. You need to download and unpack the zip. Read the installation instructions very carefully. Then follow them exactly.

It can, but you will need custom plugins to do that which can then be integrated via the variables produced by them.

Anything that is fully global with an execution order of 5 or less can be used in the side columns. There is no list of available variables that I know of, but there is no reason why you can't use if conditions.

That is the default layout of the profile page which has it's own column. The USC column is the one at the far right.

In terms of using multiple tables, make sure that your tables are started and ended correctly in the block templates. Put a <br /> at the end of the table if you want a gap between them.

I'm trying to get my Photopost feature to work vertically in one of your templates. The way you usually do this, is to put this, $photopostfeature, in the FORUMHOME template. It then pulls a few thumbnails from the Photopost Pro installation. It works fine on my site, (www.russbo.org/vb/index.php), but I can't get it to work in one of the UCS1 boxes.

Also I tried allowing the user to ad content option to see if I could add content through usercp but when I clicked the link in usercp it went to pretty much a page that showed nothing. Also if I got this to work out one day, I would like that it didn't show the 'your custom content' link if it was disabled (not visible) to users would be great, as it looks like they are missing out on something if says you do not have permission to access this link

I followed the exact installation instructions explained but I can't get the columns to show. Is anyone having the same problem or knows what's going on?

Here's what I exactly did.


Uploaded usc_cp.php to the main forum directory.
Went to Manage Products (Add/Import Product) and Imported product-ka_ultimate_sidecolumns_2-0.xml
Searched for usc_block templates and added a few rows to some of them
Went to Ultimate Side Columns Options and made sure left and right columns were enabled (they were).


I don't know why nothing is showing up. I followed the instructions words by word and have never really had problems installing mods in the past.

Just doing updates now. It will def work when I'm done although it will work now apart from the custom links section (which won't work anyway due to a bug in version 2.0).

The blank page issue is resolved in version 2.1 (I missed a couple of templates from the XML - oooops). Permissions are being investigated at the moment.

The collapsible icon pushes the whole column to the right in Firefox but does not in IE7. It's not a big issue but thought I'd let you know.

Is there a list somewhere of what we can put in the UCS boxes? I'm currently just using HTML code, and it works great (www.russbo.org/vb/index.php), but has anyone figured out how to put other stuff in here? Like Last Posts, Statistics, Random Photo, etc??? Do we have to change any of the plugin stuff in vbulletin to make this usual forumhome stuff work in the side columns? Again, I apologize for my ignorance; I just don't fully understand the plugin system yet.

Sure, I'll add an all pages too as I know there are a handful of pages that have been missed out. :)

I've got 2.2 planned, it just will need some serious coding to do what I want to do with it so it wasn't put into 2.1. Every time I change something I think of something else. It's taking on a life of it's own now but it is fun coding it especially as I am learning so much while doing it.

I'm not letting on what will be in 2.2 yet though as the chances are that it will change again before I start and morph into something else again by the time I have finished it.:eek:

Standard forumhome variables are not global. They would need to be made into plugins in either the global_start or global_complete hook location to allow them to be used.

Things that do come up more than a couple of times are being considered for inclusion in future releases.

If people start making UCS addons then that would be really cool! :D

Added usergroup permissions in addition to the global options for viewing the left column, viewing the right column, and using the custom contents block.

If I change USC Options to ''I'll edit my own templates thanks'' and have this in it works okay.

But if I take that out and change USC Options to ''under navbar and notices'' everything goes squiffy.

Also I have to have the similar part from the footer taken out else my forum expands with the right side bar copied below the page across 100% width.

I've just upgraded and the side columns are showing where I have set them in the admin, however I have several pages which do not show side columns because they are not included in the list.

These are mostly pages which have been created by other mods, but version 2.0 worked on all pages. How do I get this feature back?!

You haven't uploaded the files in the upload folder. Upload the files in the upload folder then reimport the product.

Either use the manual edits setting or delete the old manual edits from your header and footer templates.

You need to enable them, set the permissions for who can view them, and set the pages that they are displayed on. You also need to add some contents. When you have done this you will see your columns.

This is clearly stated in the upgrade instructions, in the first post of this thread, in the post that was added when the update was released, and was stated in the notification of an update that was sent out to people that have marked this as installed. Thats a problem with your firewall. Disable it then download the file again.

You edit the templates called block_ as per the instructions.

right then, I know this should be clear by now, but it appears that there is a lot of problems following instructions.

USC 2.1 has additional files. You need to upload the files first BEFORE importing the product

2.2 did have more features. Going off the number of people having problems following the instructions to upgrade to 2.1 this is now being scrapped. 2.2 is now going to be a bug fix release only.

The new features are going on indefinite hold and earmarked for 3.0 which will be created when I have time and released when instructions can be followed as it will be complex for the initial setup. As I have previously mentioned, USC has a life of its own and is evolving rapidly. The more it evolves the more complex it will become. If a relatively simple version is causing so much difficulty then version 3.0 is going to have to be rethought. This will not happen quickly as a lot of though needs to be put in to the plans for the future of it.

True, but that did not fix the extra line break at the start of the right side column (top) as shown in the picture.

Also, not sure why you assume I use IE. I'm using Firefox, occasionally Opera.

I used to use your old right side column only hack for 3.6 which never caused that extra break on top.

edit: $vbgallery code (from Photoposts's Vbgallery) no longer works on forumhome either after using USC

Further clarification, not even this hack is able to pull the poll info in the USC block

They used to work fine in the 3.6 version of your right-side forumhome only hack. The reason I switched
is because that older hack had endless W3C errors.

I have recreated this on localhost. Looking into it now.

[edit] I've found the problem. It is something to do with the auto edits. I'm still looking into it but a fix is that if the autoedits are disabled and the manual edits used that it will resolve the problem.

[edit 2] I've put a fix in which disables the display of the columns in all profile.php pages. I haven't found the reason for this yet or why it only affects that one particular page.

Well now that would be a little more difficult as the ZIP file I downloaded didn't include any other files that needed to get moved over. I'll download it again and see what I come up with.

Well I see the problem, the Zip file seems to keep generating little error messages about missing files. When I auto extracted the zip file it just pulled out what it could and in this case missed the entire uploads folder. Was this zip compiled on a Mac by any chance?

These are things that are on my 3.0 wish list. 3.0 is not yet in active development.

Please remember that the modification you were using was a simple template edit. USC is not a template edit. USC is a complex modification that is getting more complex with every major release. It is not however a portal system nor is it intended to be. I still do and always will recommend simple template modifications over complex modifications where the modification is only required on one page and is required to be able to access existing page specific and non-global functions.

I know there is already extensive support for what pages the sidebar should appear on. But can't you add 2 text fields in the options page for default pages to include/exclude.

most pages have an identifier, in example 'payments.php' has:
define('THIS_SCRIPT', 'payments');

So maybe a text field:
include sidebar on pages (and then the this_script identifiers seperated with commas), like:
payments, usercp, ...

same thing for exclude.

This could be useful for modifications where you want to disable/enable the navbar...

for example, I want to see the sidebar on all pages, except on a page of a mod that hase already a 3 column layout, so the sidebar would be to much.
Then this option would be very useful...

If it is a popular modification that you are referring to then let me know which one and I'll add it into the options. I'm always a bit wary of adding too many options, especially ones where there is free input allowed as it is more likely to be a failure point for people who misunderstand the setting or set it incorrectly. If I was able to provide more support time for this then it wouldn't be too much of an issue, but at the moment it is not going to be practical because it has a high likelihood of causing issues for the average user. Adding additional exceptions via the plugins is possible for people who have a moderate understanding of PHP and will be easier when more comments are added to the code in the plugins (they pretty much just contain the code with little to no comments at the moment).

That's easy to answer - your board is RTL so all lefts are rights and rights are lefts. RTL languages get a mirror image of vBulletin so that everything is the correct way around for these languages. As USC uses the same standards it does the same thing.

I'm completely baffled by that too - had a good argument with the code and I'm still looking into it. If it can be fixed to work correctly on that page (I found the plugin but haven't yet worked out why it isn't working) then I'll include it in 2.3 but at the moment the fix that has been put in does work, it's just not ideal. There has to be something that is clashing for some reason which is what I'm looking into but it will take a while as it is such a large file to go through (profile.php)

Standard forumhome variables are not global. They would need to be made into plugins in either the global_start or global_complete hook location to allow them to be used.

Things that do come up more than a couple of times are being considered for inclusion in future releases.

If people start making UCS addons then that would be really cool! :D

Even global_start, etc. variables do not work. I am trying to include rss feeds in the sidebars

I can reproduce this and it will be fixed in the next version. In the meantime, setting the display order to 0 will stop the link from being displayed.

Make sure you have also set your usergroup permissions. By default the columns are not displayed to any usergroups. You need to set the usergroup permissions for the usergroups that you wish to be able to see the columns.

This is an issue with your style. I cannot support custom styles for obvious reasons.

OK..strange issue...

I cannot use the GO button to moderate posts, threads or any other item that needs moderation.

I had this problem once before..then discovered that the USC mod interfered with V3.7Beta.
When the new version came out supporting V3.7, I installed it..and everythign worked great...

BUT..after this latest update (2.2 - THANKS!) ..my GO button quit working again.

Strange...anyone else have this??? Or please..let me be the only one..lol.

Yup :) Don't worry though - we only learn by making mistakes :)

You need to import the product-ka_ultimate_sidecolumn_2-2.xml file, not the bitfield file. The bitfield file should be uploaded to the includes/xml directory.

Ok...it was not USC 2.2 that caused my Moderation (GO) button problem... whew..

BUT...now I have another issue.

Load time of my forum has been slowed to a crawl when USC 2.2 is enabled. Even without items in the columns the load time is like 5-8 seconds per page. Without it, load time is instant. What would cause this?

You are using it in an unsupported way. You will need to figure this out for yourself. It is an unsupported modification and as such support is limited and can only be provided for default setups.

Hi im using this mod, it was all working ok on 3.7 ive just upgraded to 3.7.1 and now the coloum sits under the forum instead of the right hand side, its fine on all the other pages but the home page it just isnt working correctly please can some one help. Thanks

This is a template issue, either with reverted templates and manual template edits, or with custom styles, or with the block contents. Check that all opening tags have closing tags.

Start a new table in the block, then end it at the end of the block and put a <br /> or two to add a gap.

I am using this mod and I have found that I have to make variables global when I want to use them in the left/right column. I tried to use plugin manager and I did short code there with global start - I am not pretty sure it is right way.

Therefore - please, is anyone able to show me how (for example) to make available information on total number of threads, last registered user and so on?

Yes, adding code to global start is the correct way to make the code global. You should always use a new plugin for each code that you add then you can manage it easily.

Adding the stats that you are requesting is something that is already coded into 3.0 which is in development (albeit slow development because of other commitments)

Revert the template like you would with any other template. It will return it to the original state.

It had no effect if i had chosen vbulletin or usc product

I had version 1.0 installed earlier but I uninstalled it and installed the latest version from scratch. (i.e. didn't run the upgrade script)

I added the sample code in block1 but still the left column doesn't get displayed. (Yes, it's been enabled in vb options)

It won't do that, or at least not in version 2.x I haven't got this on my wish list for 3.0 either, and it is unlikely to be put on there as there are many completely different issues for this type that are specific to that. I did release one that did this a while back which can be found in my profile. As long as it is for 3.5 or 3.6 then it will work on 3.7 (I think it is probably 3.6, but it might be older than that - I know it is a good while ago).

Check that you have enabled the usergroup to be able to view the columns in the usergroup > edit usergroup page. By default it is disabled for all usergroups here.

I tried to move the $spacer_open part to the navbar to get the wifth of the header for the navbar, but this little mod doesn't work with the USC 2.2 - I changed the parts in the xml wich says:
$vbulletin->templatecache['header'] = $vbulletin->templatecache['header'] . '";$spacer_open="';

to:

$vbulletin->templatecache['navbar'] = $vbulletin->templatecache['navbar'] . '";$spacer_open="';

and it seems to work.

I don't think, that you can change your mod to do this automagically, but I wanted to mention it, since it gave me a big headache. :eek:

You have to start the block with:

Would it be a simple process for you to add time or date or other options like the Notices function has? For me it would be great to have the ability of Notices included in this mod.

Even global_start, etc. variables do not work. I am trying to include rss feeds in the sidebars

Now, if you put the $rss variable in the usc_sidecolumn_right template like:

Then it works... but not when put in the block templates.

I've been trying everything I can think of, most especially reading and rereading the instructions, to get an install. I develop software myself, so I hate to give in ask for advise, but I can't think of anything left to do.

I've uploaded the files, then went back to remove the usc_upgrade.php file.

I've imported the product-ka_ultimate_sidecolumns_2-0.xml

This part works fine. I get 2.0 installed.

Next, I go to import product-ka_ultimate_sidecolumns_2-1.xml

No luck. I made sure to check the "overwrite" box. I get a blank page when importing. No error, just a blank white page.

Same with product-ka_ultimate_sidecolumn_2-2.xml

I've uninstalled everything. Tried to import 2-2 first. No luck, blank white page. The only file I can import, is the 2-0 file.

If I go to userpermissions, I can see the user options at the very bottom. There is no text next to them, but looking at the code, I can make out these are the settings for usc.

Thinking that maybe I don't have permission to alter the tables, I do a search and find this page:

How do you add anything to the blocks? All it says on my forum is left forum sidebar and then right forum sidebar. This is different then the previous mod, I don't know how to add any advertisements or anything into the block because there isn't a place for it?

Do this: 1) Uninstall what you have done. In your AdminCP click on Plugin & Products then click on Manage Products. 2) Look for Ultimate Side Columns in the list and opposite it there is a text drop-down box with the word "Edit" in it. Click on that dropdown box arrow and choose "Uninstall". Then..

Use your FTP program to upload everything in the Upload folder that came with the 2.2 version file. But before you upload to your server remove the usc_upgrade.php file from the admincp folder. After you upload all files check the admincp folder on your server to make sure the usc_upgrade.php file isn't there. If it is then remove it. Once you have uploaded all the files to their proper locations on your server then...

Go to your AdminCP click on Plugin & Products then Manage Products and click on the Add/Import product link at bottom of page. In the Import Product window browse to the location where your 2.2 files are and choose ONLY the 2.2 product file. DON'T import any others as this is a new install and not an upgrade. Make sure you choose Yes for Allow Overwrite. Then....

Click Import. Mod should be imported properly and you can now make necessary changes to usergroup permissions in Usergroup Manager. To add content to a block just read the instructions and when you are ready to add content go to your Admincp, click on Search in Templates, type in the letters usc in the text box and click Find button. All the usc templates will appear and you can begin to choose which block(s) to add content.

I just upgraded to VB 3.7, USC 2.2 and VBA CMPS 3.01 - prior to this I had no alignment issue. Now, my right (USC) column has dropped to the left side below all content - see here (http://www.xpmediacentre.com.au).

I don't know where to go with this since I can't be sure if it's a a VBA CMPS issue or a combination of VBA & USC, so I'm posting it with both authors in the hope I can find a fix.

On first glance it would seem likely that it's a style problem, the same problem presents when I select the default VB skin - see here (http://www.xpmediacentre.com.au/community/index.php?styleid=18) - then go to http://www.xpmediacentre.com.au/.

As can be seen, I have no problem with the main forum pages, just the portal page. I'm guessing that it's related to a rogue <div> problem, but having scoured my templates and the forums here and over at VBA - I'm at a loss as to where to look next.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Further clarification, not even this hack is able to pull the poll info in the USC block

So basically so far I've noticed USC does not pull info for:
- the poll hack above
- latest gallery posts (vbgallery)
- forum stats

They used to work fine in the 3.6 version of your right-side forumhome only hack. The reason I switched
is because that older hack had endless W3C errors.

Considering this hack is listed as "unsupported" and the developer stated the above won't be available until the 3.0 version, does anyone know how to resolve this in the meantime?
