Ultimate Side Columns 2.2

Hi everyone, if you can help, I'd appreciate it. In IE, Opera (but not Firefox or Flock), footer info has jumped under the USC right column. See photo below. Any idea how to fix this? Thanks so much.

Just a general idea... But most of the time when we see something like this displaying differently in IE and FF:

A) It's because IE is a pile of crap (I keed I keed! Well, actually no, IE sucks ;) )

B) More importantly it's possible you've got a glitch in your tags somewhere else in the page. I'd make sure to turn on the "Add Template Name in HTML Comments" in the ACP -> vBulletin Options -> General Settings then run the page in question though the W3C validator http://validator.w3.org/. Turn on all the options so you can see the source etc (and that's why you want the template names in HTML comments, makes it a LOT easier to track down where the problems are.

It's a major PITA, but keep hammering away at it till you get the page to validate and see if that doesn't solve your alignment issue, it prob will.

Depends on what you want? You determine the base width of the columns in the settings for USC, and if you put larger things (images) in, it will just make the column wider.

Susan figured out a way to do this yesterday. I'll try and get her to write up a series of steps, but the basics of what she did was to use feedburner to grab the RSS feed from vBlog, then used feedburner's buzzboost (http://www.google.com/support/feedburner/bin/answer.py?answer=78991&cbid=1hfrtq5zr0ojg&src=cb&lev=answer) to generate a code snippet that could be dropped into a USC block.

She did some tweaking of the layout via css on our site, but it WORKS!

Take a look at our forum (http://www.ikeafans.com/forums) for a an example of how it looks.

I am not using USC anymore, that is infact VBAdvanced which is a temporary measure. I am eventually going vbDrupal/Drupal once I get things all working correctly.

So navigate to your forum home copy the url from your browser, and paste it into the W3C validator and click the button to tell it to validate.

If you haven't done this before, be aware that fixing the validation errors can be a major pain, it'll probably take a lot of digging though templates, and it's not something anyone can advise you on via a thread, way to many variables. If you're not comfortable using Firefox+Firebug and reading though the errors, you might want to see if you can find a coder that's willing to help.

If you have the basic background and/or are willing to spend some time on it, it's really just a matter of keeping at it till you find the source of the problems. In general you want to try and fix the earliest errors first, as you generally get cascade errors where a badly formed tag causes a whole series of errors below it. Ads are also a MAJOR source of validation errors, they often have & in them instead of the proper escape sequence of: & (don't forget the ; at the end either!). Good luck!

I did a search through the thread and could not see this mentioned...

Only think this mod needs now is to conditionally enable left and right columns per style.

Some styles have a column built in (often with the login there).

It would be nice!

PS: I think a lot of the problems people have with getting the columns to show in non-standard styles might be resolved by trying different positions under the Column start point option... It was useful to me anyway.

EDIT: Nevermind I figured it out which did bring up another question.

My BLOCK edits were done within a specific style HOWEVER the enabling of the column appears to be global so the current default template is showing the left column for the usergroups specified. Of course the column is blank because it isn't the style where I added the block code.

Is there a way to make COLUMN display style-specific?

More of a general CSS question I think but it pertains to this mod. I'm using right column only, forumhome only, and I'm using my own template edits so that the navbar and footer span the width of the page.

How would I go about getting the right column to have a height of 100%? I've tried setting it as a CSS class for the table and table cell, and plain old "height="100%" in the row, table and cell but it still only makes the table the height of the first row's contents. It's drivin' me nuts!

Also: To save me some headaches, if anyone's got this on the right side so that the WGO box is still 100% width (eg: the column is only on the right side of the actual forums) I'd love to know where you tossed the code. :)

Great mod, but I have a suggestion and one complaint. Kerry-Anne, as a vB.org staff member, why have you NOT updated the installation instructions(.txt file) to include 'ok, now, for your side columns to show, you need to update your usergroup permissions from the usergroup manager for each usergroup' and left that part up to all your installers to figure out and complain about? Come on! I spent over an hour trying to figure that out. Why would someone take so much time putting such a greak hack together and not take the time to update that?

Suggestion: Instead of template edits for the usc_block templates, you should incorporate those blocks into the ACP-vBulletin Options->Ultimate Side Columns Options. An option like that, would make this TRUELY the "Ultimate Side Columns" mod.

At anyrate, this mod works well if you are a mid level vB hacker and I personally take the time to "Thank you" for it.

On regular forum pages it's showing the columns.

Having the same issue. Spent most of the day playing with it. The only time I can get it to show with VBadvanced is to select the below header and above navbar option. All testing done on a stock theme with a fresh install of VBadvanced.

I looked in the plugin and saw what it is looking for in the Navbar. Vbadvanced uses the same navbar so it should not have any issues. The only thing I can think is that it is a variable issue where it is good in the header but not so in the navbar.

EDIT: got it working by manually editing and throwing the start into the ad_navbar_below template. For some reason it wont work in the navbar template and show up on the VBa page.

All in all a much more powerful mod. It is more advanced and requires a bit more reading but gives much more flexibility in the long run. Great Job!

Regarding Version 2.0 New Installation
VBulletin 3.7.3

New to this and having problems - nothing showed up after installation...

I uploaded the admincp files to the forums admincp file and the includes file to the includes file and uploaded them via ftp. I wasn't sure where to upload usc_cp.php. So, I just uploaded to the forums root folder. Then, I deleted usc_upgrade.php from the AdminCP directory and it looked like nothing was left there.

Uploaded the xml file as a product under Plugin's and products on AdminCP

In the VBulletin Options there are two errors... One for the R side and one for the L side:
Using this setting you can determine the pages where the left column will be displayed.
Error: An error occurred while processing the bitfield files, the following information was returned:

No columns are appearing on any pages. However, the forums table on my home page has changed it's shape.

I tried to change usergroup permissions. But there is nothing related to adding the columns under any of the usergroups.

Can anyone offer any help on what I have done and how I can fix the problem?

Not sure what I did wrong....but I cant get any columns to show up......I uploaded the files, installed the product...2-2 one...I have never installed any previous version....

I made a test block on the left side...# 1 started it and ended it with the code in the read me file....

I updated the usergroups to be able to see it......and I still cant see any side columns?

I am trying to get a left column to show up only one one type of page. I am setting up an addon called vbAdvanced and in my admin CP, I have this listed as one of the check box options under the "Display Pages For Left Column" section of the "Ultimate Side Columns Options" setup page.

I have tried to check all of the available options (except all pages) and the left col does not show up. When I do check "all pages" it shows up fine.

Check your HTML for errors. FireFox is the least fussy about bad HTML so will show things when other browsers refuse to do so.

No it wouldn't ;) They were there in the original version, but no variables can be passed via the vBOptions which caused many complaints about limited functionality and usefulness so they were moved into the templates instead.

I will update the release post, but the docs won't be updated just for a small change to the instructions.

And the block codes was originally in the vBOptions but was moved to the templates as the use of the vBOptions severely limits the functionality available in the blocks. Simple things like basic variables are not available via contents through the vBOptions. It doesn't mean that I don't think about a better solution for it for 3.0 when I start writing that (I'll get to it eventually).

I can't seem to unzip your 2.2 file - it converts the folders to 0 size files. Also, there's a lot of ".DS_Store" files from Mac which comes through, too. Can you recompile?

Is there a way to have two left columns?

For example: Column 1 will show on Pages X , X , X , X

Column 2 will show on pages O , O , O , O

But still on the left side - so two left columns, with different things?

If you just want two left and no right, use the manual tempate edits but instead of putting the right variable in the footer edit, put it right after the left variable in the header edit. Then treat your left column and right column as separate left column instances

i thought that support was included for conditionals now?

I have lifted the login box code exactly as it was, and the stats code exactly as it was and neither work.

SOLVED! Twitter Updates working now. I guess it takes several hours for code to work. This post was like going to a mechanic; problem goes away while talking to mechanic.

I put two FLASH but the bar of the Title (anuncios) appeared underneath the FLASH (check pictures)

I tried putting in start HTML of flash <tr><td class="alt1"> and the end </td></tr> and the FLASH appeared towards the right, outside the measures of the Web.

The zip file was made with an Apple and at least for some it is incompatible with the Vista unzip utility. Got around it by downloading pkunzip.

Using Vista to unzip the file causes errors which are not readily apparent. Including leaving files out without telling you. So when you upload, you think you uploaded everything but you didn't Very annoying. It might help if someone would recompile using Windows.

How can I move the breadcrumb area into one of the columns? It would include the login/private_messages box as well as the current location.

When I move the code for the log-in/PM area it always shows the log-in form even if I'm logged in.

Standard forumhome variables are not global. They would need to be made into plugins in either the global_start or global_complete hook location to allow them to be used.

Things that do come up more than a couple of times are being considered for inclusion in future releases.

If people start making UCS addons then that would be really cool! :D

Everything is finally working. Thanks for a great mod. All of these problems are because people think they are following the instructions but they are not.

I have a final question. I have my right column set up to be 160 pixels wide. Block 11 and 12 are fine but Block 13 keeps being about 1/4 inch wider. It seems to be due to the border. The border won't go away even if I use "0". In fact "1" doesn't make it any narrower, either. It screws up the symmetry.

Here is the code I am using for Block 13:

The image is only 160 pixels wide. Using Height and Width doesn't help either.

Any ideas on what knocks it out of alignment? Here is a link if you want to see what I mean. It's the right column.

I wonder if it is possible to include dynamic content. I created a Plugin using the code below:

ob_start();
include('myfile.php');
$includedphp = ob_get_contents();
ob_end_clean();

Hook Location is global_start

However, if I add $includedphp to usc_block_11 for example, it doesn't show the contents of $includedphp.

I am aware that this is not an issue with this product. However, maybe someone is already loading dynamic content into a Column and can help out with this.

Followed all the install instructions for USC 2.2 within VB 3.7.4, even with it all turned on I get one title block on the left side at the top which has a black gap that is too wide and one at the bottom on the left, not the top right where it should be. Also mucks up the size pushing the whole forum off one page view.

Any ideas how to get the block at the bottom over to the right where it should be and make the black gaps smaller? (sorry I'm not an expert so excuse the terms used) Thanks.

Everything is finally working. Thanks for a great mod. All of these problems are because people think they are following the instructions but they are not.

I have a final question. I have my right column set up to be 160 pixels wide. Block 11 and 12 are fine but Block 13 keeps being about 1/4 inch wider. It seems to be due to the border. The border won't go away even if I use "0". In fact "1" doesn't make it any narrower, either. It screws up the symmetry.

Here is the code I am using for Block 13:

Make your column wider or your image smaller. There is a 4px each side padding so your image doesn't fit and stretches the box.

Make sure it is in global_start hook location and keep changing the execution order until it works. I can't recall what it needs to be off the top of my head.

Make sure you import the product file too.

Using Vista to unzip the file causes errors which are not readily apparent. Including leaving files out without telling you. So when you upload, you think you uploaded everything but you didn't Very annoying. It might help if someone would recompile using Windows.

I have two problems:

Everything was well with USC, it had installed step by step USC 2-2 but, without doing nothing yesterday in the afternoon the column right moved 1cm to the right (they watch photo 1) www.motofanaticos.com (http://www.motofanaticos.com)

This problem is with I.explorer, if you check in Firefox all Ok.

I will update the release post, but the docs won't be updated just for a small change to the instructions.

And the block codes was originally in the vBOptions but was moved to the templates as the use of the vBOptions severely limits the functionality available in the blocks. Simple things like basic variables are not available via contents through the vBOptions. It doesn't mean that I don't think about a better solution for it for 3.0 when I start writing that (I'll get to it eventually).

I followed all of the instructions twice, was about to give up, and then went through every page of this thread to find this information. Why not update your first post with the critical information and add it to the files when you have a chance?

Edit usc_block to add content to your columns. Blocks 1 -> 10 are defaulted to the left column and blocks 11 -> 20 are defaulted to the right column.

Each block must start with: <tr> <td class="alt1">

The alt1 may be replaced with another class as desired.

Each block must end with:</td> </tr>

Failure to include this compulsory code at the start and end of the templates will render the templates malformed and cause display issues with your columns.

This error condition is only given when USC is active, when disabled or removed the bbcode template functions without any problems.

Any solution for this error?

The file seems to be corrupted. Could you please update the download? It saves as an unknown file type. Well, I mean it says it is a zip file and I can run Extract All on it, but then I get an unknown file type. The one file that gets extracted doesn't seem to be anyting Windows recognizes. Thanks.

Last, if I add a <br> inside the block templates, instead of creating a break within the block, it is putting a break between the blocks themselves.

Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated!

Kerry-Anne, excellent hack. It works great. But I have one simple question, my apologies if I'm showing my ignorance.

I'm trying to get my Photopost feature to work vertically in one of your templates. The way you usually do this, is to put this, $photopostfeature, in the FORUMHOME template. It then pulls a few thumbnails from the Photopost Pro installation. It works fine on my site, (www.russbo.org/vb/index.php), but I can't get it to work in one of the UCS1 boxes.

Thanks a lot for this hack, Kerry Anne! I'm migrating my old, hardcoded sidebar to this system. It's really useful.

However, I'm finding a problem when I try to use it with Logician's webtemplates custom made templates on my website.

The webtamplates powered pages only seem to display correctly when I disable completely the USC plugin. I attach an example for you to see (can't link you to them cause the style is still private).

forumhome.png (screenshot) and forumhome.txt (the source code) are the columns displaying correctly.

webtemplates.png (screenshot) and webtemplates.txt (the source code) show the page broken.

Have you changed the usergroup permissions for this mod?

After reading through, what, 42 pages of comments, it seems 50% of them are "My columns do not show" (including my post) Perhaps it would be better to make them show by default in usergroup permissions. At least that way the columns would show fom the start and then users could edit usergroup permissions and simply uncheck where they dont want them to show.

Found a fix for the delete custom link problem

Open usc_cp.php and find the following line of code (line 83):

$linkid = $vbulletin->GPC['id'];

replace it with

$linkid = $_POST['id'];

Not sure what the question is, are you asking where the custom links are displayed? That is determined by which block you edited and whether or not you are using right or left columns. Or are you asking where people insert their custom links? If you have custom links enabled then there will be a link at the bottom of the usercp menu in the person's control panel.

I managed to change the color of the side column background by changing the Table Border color but it messes up the main forum color. For instance, when I change the color of the border to white, the side column background turns white, which is what I want, but the colored borders on forum page disappear.

But if you want to know how to change the color of the background on 3.7 , I have attached screenshot. If you have another way to do this please post it.

Just a note to those who may run into this problem (I just did): if you're using Cyb's Sub-Forum Manager hack / mod, it can conflict with USC 2.2 (in vB3.7.4 anyway) and break the formatting so that right-hand columns will extend out past the right side of the template / layout. Turning off the sub-forum manager solves the problem.

update to my original post. I had not noticed that you would need to go and remove any old code from the previous version of USC, hence when I did this issue resolved itself. :o

The install went fine. If I were to try and write the code I feel version 5.0.0 will be out.

i know what ur talkin bout, ive been tryin to accomplish the same thing. altho i havnt found any mods that specifically show the content in the the side menu. pretty much all would have to be done would be some coding changes but im not exactly the best at this stuff.

why have you NOT updated the installation instructions(.txt file) to include 'ok, now, for your side columns to show, you need to update your usergroup permissions from the usergroup manager for each usergroup' and left that part up to all your installers to figure out and complain about?

No, I just found that by chance looking here. Someone really needs to rewrite the readme, it's useless.

The readme does leave out the bit about the usergroups, but it is well covered here. The rest of the readme seems quite useful to me.

I have noticed on several examples here a problem that I have also. The left and right collapse buttons do not line up the same. The left collapse is above the column, but the right collapse is to the right of its column. I think that is a glitch in the template, but I could not find it. I liked the idea that one user suggested of using a separate button to condition the columns. He put the button in the user login bits at the top of the screen. A nice little set of buttons would have a screen icon with a column on each side that changed color and controlled its respective column display.

I would also love to see some nice full examples of how to generate a text stream from some of the local information. I tired using an iframe with the result that all my Ajax controls were disabled. I will look on vb.com to see if I can find the technique mentioned earlier for displaying the contents of a thread. It would be good to have a nice dictionary of the conditionals information useful for controlling block contents. That may require just reading on my parts.

In reading all these posts I have been surprised at how often examples have been posted with bad html. i.e. <tr><td>some stuff</tr></td> instead of correctly nesting the tags. The other common error was leaving off the closing tag on an <a href=.......>Link stuff </a>.

I am surprised that any browsers allow such code, but browser developers must try to be tolerant of errors.

If someone has a clue how to fix the collapse button positioning I would appreciate seeing that. One of my users is giving me fits over it. If anyone has a site where the buttons are used and display correctly, that would be useful too.

Try the usergroup permissions. Look at the very bottom and find the setting to show side columns. :D

Yes it works on 3.8 you need to go to user permissions and turn it ON there for each usergroup you want to see columns..

Hi Kerry-Anne, UI have searched now through these mod threads and have not yet found an answer or directions on how to include an external RSS feed into Ultimate Side Columns 2.2.

Is this possible? If someone has posted the solution could someone or yourself please post the link to that solution. Many thanks.

Also a second question: Are you able to place the Ultimate Side Columns 2.2 under the welcome template area so it aligns with the forum categories etc. The reason for this is so my breadcrumb and login areas don't begin to wrap due to the right column beginning to the right of them

Yes, usergroups are set to view the left column. I have also enabled the left column in vboptions and checked which boxes I want to display.

First I am going to say I love this mod, best thing since sliced bread :)

How do you add the side columns to the DownloadsII pages? The mod I am talking about is found here https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=120122&highlight=downloads

If I enable them to be displayed on all pages the side columns show up but I am now running vbadvanced 3.0.1 so this causes a problem on my home page.

The only way I can see to get it running right would be to add the DownloadsII to your page list. Is there a way I can edit the xml and add the DownloadsII pages then re-import the xml?

Better yet, maybe make a disable on index.php option?

Update:

I found a way around this for now, I renamed my vbadvanced homepage php to something else and renamed the index.php back to the forum... so now the index.php points to the forum again :(

I wanted the index.php to point to my home page (vbadvanced index) then I forwarded my domain to the new php file that points to the vbadvanced.


Last update: I have uninstalled this mod, vbadvanced is the way to go for side columns. It can have side columns on any (every) page you want. It took a little of searching in the vbadvanced forums but finally I have done it. Hope this helps someone.

I can't delete custom links from my UserCP. I added the link, it added to the custom column, and it worked. I decided to remove it (it was a test link) by clicking "delete" in my UserCP... it brought me to the screen where it said it was deleted, and the reloaded my UserCP. The link is still there. Logged off, cleared cookies, log in on a different computer... clicked "delete" a dozen times and it always says it's being deleted, but never gets deleted.
