Katelynn,

you can move sitemap to domain root as described in http://www.vbseo.com/wiki/Sitemap:FAQ#How_To_Move_Sitemap_To_Domain_Root

Pebbled,

what is the sitemap URL you submit?

Pebbled
03-25-2008, 07:43 AM
The sitemap I'm submitting to Google is http://www.example.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz

Where obviously the only piece Google ask for in their input box is after the /

as in sitemap_index.xml.gz

I don't understand why it's only the 1st sitemap generated which displays errors and not the 2nd?

Like I say, I'm not a php coder :(

Katelynn,

you can move sitemap to domain root as described in http://www.vbseo.com/wiki/Sitemap:FAQ#How_To_Move_Sitemap_To_Domain_Root

Pebbled,

what is the sitemap URL you submit?

THANK you iojam ...

I Created .htaccess in domain root: (with the code)
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap_).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ forum/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

I defined "Sitemap Files URL" option in vBSEO Sitemap Generator configuration to: "http://www.mysite.com"

And I then reopened the sitemap generator on my site and re-generated the sitemap.

Now for Google Web Master Tools, do I setup ONLY the one sitemap for /ROOT? Or should I have one for both sitemaps?
One for /ROOT http://www.mysite.com
and One for /FORUMROOT http://www.mysite.com/forum

I have my robot.txt file pointing to my sitemap in the "ROOT" location ... I hope that is right?

Thanks for the help! Trying to get those Threads and Posts listed in MSN, Google, and Yahoo so I can get some people to start really finding my site! ;)

Should I remove .htaccess information pointing to my forumROOT? sitemap generator?

Sorry for so many questions, thanks for the help!

Hi,

I hope you can help me with this

I've installed vBSEO Google/Yahoo Sitemap Generator v.2.1 in my vbulletin

and I did everything as mentioned in the Installation Instructions

and everything went but

when I go to add my sitemap in google webmaster tools it gives me this error:

General HTTP error: 404 not found
We encountered an error while trying to access your Sitemap. Please ensure your Sitemap follows our guidelines and can be accessed at the location you provided and then resubmit.

I don't know what's wrong and I hope someone can tell me how to get over this issue

I've installed this in another website and everything went ok and I hadn't any problem with it and it works just great and a few days later I installed it to my other website but I have this problem...

why do I have this problem with my new website and I didn't have it in my first one?

any idea about how I can fix this, please? because this problem is reall driving my crazy

thank you

What URL did you submit to Google?

Was it the same as mine, i.e. sitemap_index.xml.gz

Katelynn,

you can keep a sitemap in your domain root only now.

Super Jinni,

make sure that you created .htaccess file and that your server supports mod_rewrite.

Pebbled,

I meant what exactly is your (real) sitemap URL, including domain name? You can PM it to me so that I can check it.

Super Jinni

Super Jinni,

make sure that you created .htaccess file and that your server supports mod_rewrite.

thanks for your reply iojam

I've uploaded the .htaccess as mentioned in the installation instructions

and I believe that the service supports mod_rewrite because that already works with my first website just a few days before I installed the vbseo generator in the second website.. both websits are in the same server..

I don't know what's wrong.. and I hope you can really help me with this and solve this problem I face...

it's really driving me mad...

Super Jinni,

What URL did you submit to Google?

Was it the same as mine, i.e. sitemap_index.xml.gz

not exactly

after I generated it it gave me url like this

www.mysite.com/forum/sitemap_index.xml

no gz in the end

and I've tried both with gz and without it

and every time tells that sitemap file not found...

I don't know what's worng...

Super Jinni,

do you have sitemap files created in vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder?

JustAskJulie,

what do you see when executing it manually via vbseo_sitemap/ interface?

beatthecasino,

please check the html source of that page to find out what exactly is the db error message.

raagaswaram,

vBSEO Sitemap Generator is a separate mod and can be used without vBSEO product.

Super Jinni,

do you have sitemap files created in vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder?

these are the files that I found in vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder:

.htaccess
index.php
sitmap_1.xml.gz
urllist.txt.gz

does that mean my sitemap is the third one?

JustAskJulie
04-01-2008, 06:54 PM
When I tell it to create the sitemap it looks just like what Beatthecasino posted except that it says it's done and doesn't say there's an error. Then when I click "here is your google sitemap" I get a 404.

I was about to post that I was having the same problem as Super Jinni

When I clicked on the link for my site map:http://www.mysite.com/sitemap_index.xml

It said: Sitemap file not found

Then I click on "run sitemap generator" and that didn't change anything

I had to walk away for about 45 minutes and now when I login to my sitemap admin area I see a different link: http://www.mysite.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz

So maybe it just takes time?

beatthecasino,

if you have vBSEO product installed, try to reinstall xml product file in vB admincp.

Super Jinni,

what do you see when executing sitemap generator in browser? Looks like sitemap generation is not completed in your case.

chattykathy,

yes, depending on the number of threads/posts, it may take a while to create sitemaps.

i'm havnig similar problem with jinni

i first tried to create sitemap with default options and ended up with 63mb file and i guess it was still incomplete. (when i download the files and check inside, uncompressed sitemap file was shoing 2gb size)

so i tried to remove all but "Include forum display pages" but it still generates huge files and never finishes.
I was migrated from phpbb to vbulletin last week. vbseo works fine.

any idea what may cause this problem?

I dont know how many links my site have :) Google showing 18.300 but that includes my old phpbb forum's links, still in google's cache.
anyway.
I did not modify anything in that file. But checking now
vbseo_sm_config30x.php
file doesnt have the settings i set via admincp->vBSEO Sitemap Settings
it still has every include option set to 1 like
'vbseo_sm_showpost' => '1',
and the interface access password i set vai admincp is empty here.
I manually set vbseo_sm_xx settings and included only thread and forum in sitemap but it still generates huge files.

I will remove and try reinstalling vbseo Sitemap.

if changes i made in "vBSEO Sitemap Settings" should be written and saved in "vbseo_sm_config30x.php" file than thats related to my problem because this file does not reflect my changes I made in acp.

:up:Make sure that you have 0777 permission set for vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder.

boy do I feel smart now, I was thinking that it was a file I forgot to chmod but wasn't sure which one!!! Thanks .... going to go hide under a rock now! LOL

Super Jinni,

try to increase memory_limit and max_execution_time settings in PHP configuration on your host.

I couldn't do that because PHP configuration settings are customizable by the server administrator. They are listed for reference only.

but I don't think that is the problem, because in my other website it works fine with the same php configuration...

I reinstalled vbseo generator and deleted the vbseo_sitemap folder form the forum root the uploaded a fresh copy that I downloaded just now from here.
when I went to the vBSEO Sitemap Reports I found that the url of (Your Google Sitemap Index) still there before I generate it. after I generated it it still the same as before. and the sitemap ends with .xml not
with .gz as in the other website...

I've done everything that mentioned... but the problem still there..

my sitemaps are getting stored only in vbseo/data/ folder!!! how do change 'em so that they will be stored on root????
i tried this option :

Sitemap Files URL
Enter the url to use for sitemap files in case if you want to specify non-default URLs. For instance:
http://www.example.com

Leave this setting empty to use default vB url.
i wrote my root url in there but still its not storing sitemaps on root!!

also when i generate sitemap, it shows me this :

You should not copy the files into the forums root, although files are physically stored in the data/ folder, they can be accessed via forums root with rewrite rule specified in .htaccess.

varkjie,

try to remove sitemap files from forums folder, create .htaccess as described, regenerate sitemaps via vbseo_sitemap/ interface and try to open http://yourforumsroot/sitemap_index.xml.gz in browser.

nirvana43,

you should change this:
Sitemap: http://www.mysitename.com/vbseo_sitemap/data/sitemap_index.xml.gz
Sitemap: http://www.mysitename.com/vbseo_sitemap/data/urllist.txt.gz

to:
Sitemap: http://www.mysitename.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz

Although I couldnt manage to get vbseositemap working, I can say with my previous sitemap creation experience, your sitemap file seems normal. sitemap_index is an index file as name says. it includes the location of sitemap files. and it really does, it points to sitemap_1 file.
I've seen some software or seo pros do that. an example sitemap_index file could include:
sitemap_forums.xml.gz
sitemap_threads.xml.gz
etc.

So yours seem normal. Did you try to open
sitemap_1.xml.gz
on your browser? try that.

in google webmaster tools:
1) click TOOLS to expand menu
2) click Analyze robots.txt
3) paste your robots.txt file there
4) click the check button

maybe it says where's the problem. also i'd try removing the sitemap: lines from the robots.txt and try that.

I assume you are able to open www.YourSite.com/robots.txt on your browser succesfully.

my guess for google not crawling;
google has, i dunno, maybe millions of sites to crawl, so it has its priorities. Even if you submit your site to google for indexing it may take long time. if your site has links from important, high ranked sites, i'm sure it will be crawled soon after it sees the links. And its always fast. If no links, than sitemap is one of the helpers. It's worth the effort. After that, it's up to your site's content update frequency.

1) googlebot may be indexing your site content (even if the site doesnt have sitemap)
2) if you have adsense ads on site's pages, then google media agent may be checking content for ad relevancy.

i'm having problem in getting sitemap. Here's what i did
uploaded all the files as per instructions in folder (forum) under my root folder i.e
www.mydomain/forums/
here i installed vbseo_sitemap,
i gave 777 permission to data folder
i also updated.htaccess file too
everything is done i think correctly.

but how to add sitemap
i visited www.google.com/sitemaps
there i don't know what to put, in this forum sometimes i see vbseo_sitemap.xml.gz
and sometimes different
do i have to put like this
www.mydomain.com/forums/vbseo_sitemap.xml.gz or
www.mydomain.com/forums/vbseo_sitemap/data/vbseo_sitemap.xml.gz

Can anyone just mention everything from start to end on how to install and what files have to change, and in which folder we have to install, whether root, or else. Please if anyone did installed correctly give me the step by step procedure. I will be very greatful to him

hi all,
need some help.
I installed vbseo sitemap as per the procedure given here. all generated sitemaps are created in data folder, whichis given 777 permission.
Another thing in the admin cp, under vbseo settings, url of sitemap was blank, and give it the path like this "http://www.mydomain.com/forums/vbseo_sitemap/data/

Under vbseo reports, i checked the generated sitemap links and clicked it and its working...
Hope i did everything correctly.

Next i went to google.com/sitemaps
and added a site like this " www.mydomain.com/forums/vbseo_sitemap/data"
because previously when i put www.mydomain.com/forums/ " its not accepting giving error like sitemap should be in homepage, or if you want to use www.mydomain.com/forums/vbseo_sitemap/data as the link for sitemap, use it as your website in your accounts.
after this i added the sitemap "sitemap_index.xml.gz" and got message ok.
and 3 other sitemaps too got updated and status is ok.

But still it shows, the total urls in sitemap is zero
indexed urls in sitemap is zero..
what does it mean. Because while in admin cp when sitemaps are generated it showed 1,42,000 urls and divided in to 3 parts...

Can anyone explain me why it shows zero urls, because i'm not getting any errors.

Or is there any problem with static or dynamic urls, i'm not an expert here so guide me. My forum is having more than 80k threads but not a single page is indexed in url.

Or is it important to have vbseo, i read in forum 'not'...
please help me out, today only...as its sunday and i'm free to put all my time in updating my forum...

thanks in advance
zia

virb, raagaswaram,

you should create .htaccess file as described in installation instructions, and you will be able to access sitemaps as if they were in forum folder, although files are stored in data/ folder.

ziahaq21,

you should submit http://www.mydomain.com/forums/sitemap_index.xml.gz to Google (not http://www.mydomain.com/forums/vbseo_sitemap/data/sitemap_index.xml.gz)

I've done everything that mentioned... but the problem still there..
hopeless

anyone Can help please?

please:(

Alfa1,

what exactly is the error you get from Google?

steveneff,

vBSEO Sitemap Generator supports only native vBulletin URLs or vBSEOed URLs.

Super Jinni,

do you have sitemap files created in vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder?

Hi,

I have follow the instructions and it seems i encounter a problem. I have transferred the whole vbseo_sitemap folder to my forum folder. At the sitemap Report homepage, there is a link to my Google Sitemap Index URL: http:// my site.com/forum/sitemap_index.xml.

The problem of it is that there is no page found. Did i do anything wrong?

Thanks in advance for helping.

btw, i am using 3.6.9. Does it work on 3.6.9?

Alfa1,

what is the sitemap URL you submit?

Yes, i did it twice and now the report show that sitemap is submitted at the sitemap history. But still i get this when i click the " Google site map URL"

<<Not Found
The requested URL /forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.>>

At my forum folder, there is no .gz file in it. i am not sure what happen. Will the gz file shown on a page normally?

Did you create .htaccess file in forum folder as described? Does your server support mod_rewrite?
Yes, to both.
I see the sitemaps are being created.
The contents of my .htaccess of my forum DIR is:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^$ index.php
RewriteRule (^[-_A-Za-z0-9\ ]*$) member.php?&username=$1
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

I do have a .htaccess active at site root.

Here is it's content:
RewriteEngine on
RedirectMatch permanent ^/index.html$ http://www.mysite.com/index.php
RedirectMatch permanent ^/$ /index.php
RewriteRule local_links/links/(.+)/(.+) local_links.php?catid=$1&linkid=$2 [R]
RewriteRule local_links/links/(.+) local_links.php?catid=$1 [R]
RewriteRule local_links/jump/(.+)/(.+) local_links.php?action=jump&id=$1&catid=$2 [R]
RewriteRule local_links/jump/(.+) local_links.php?action=jump&id=$1 [R]

Super Jinni,

there should be also sitemap_index.xml.gz file, so probably sitemap was not completed.

baghdad4ever,

do you mean vbseo_sitemap/ folder? Why do you want to put it into archive/ ?

nsolanki,

Yahoo now supports xml sitemaps, there is no need for text sitemap now.

Alfa1,

you should set "Sitemap Files URL" to http://www.domain.com and regenerate sitemap.

How long should it take before google indexes the urls in the sitemap?
Yahoo is all over the place with up to 1100 bots.
Google lists to have downloaded the sitemap on the 23rd, but nothing indexed yet. Listing: 'No data available. Please check back soon.' Previously google indexed my site immediately.

and when I go back to the vBSEO Sitemap Reports page it shows as the attached pic
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=79657&d=1209676127

and when I press on the link that gives me this sentence:
Sitemap file not found

so what's wrong?

and why it gives me the link ends with sitemap_index.xml not with sitemap_index.xml.gz as it should and as it is with the other people?

is there anyway I can get it work?

Oups, here is the right thread ...

So, how is it possible that the file sitemap_index.xml.gz is in root whereas all the others ( sitemap_x.xml.gz) are elsewere? Google demands the index to be in the root, but its impractical to have 30-40 files in the root. :)

what is he asking is if your host or you can create an .htaccess file (i think in the root) in it you can put your rewrite rules for vbseo.

It's usually done with (i did) notepad and just name it .htaccess and upload

some host doesn't support it

Most likely you have edited the file incorrectly (added a few extra line breaks at the top or at the bottom of file). Try to reupload file from the package and apply modification again.

I checked the files and didn't find anything related. However my question is:
All the search engines require the site index to be in the root folder.
However vbseo creates it in www.company.com/[...]/vbseo_sitemap/data (http://www.company.com/%5b...%5d/vbseo_sitemap/data).
How can I change sth like that? There isn't even an option from the admin panel.
Also, would it be possible to only have the index in root and not all the zipped files, in order to reduce the file clutter in the root folder.

There's an .htaccess re-write that makes them appear at the root level.. check it out.

Should i edit the .htaccess located in the root?

LinkBliss_com
05-12-2008, 11:47 AM
It depends if you already have an .htaccess file in your forum root... look at the readme in the docs folder, there are installation and upgrade instructions. I think the part you want is this:

B. Enable rewriting via .htaccess (vBSEO Users skip this step):
Upload the vBSEO Google/Yahoo Sitemap .htaccess file (located in the 'htaccess' folder) to your forum root.

Note: In some operating systems, the .htaccess file is not visible. If this is your case, find the htaccess.txt file in the same folder, (1) upload it to your forum root folder and (2) rename it to .htaccess.

Note: If you already have an .htaccess file in your forum root, DO NOT upload the vBSEO Google/Yahoo Sitemap .htaccess file as it will replace the contents of this file. Instead, enter the following code in your 'forum-root/.htaccess' file at the bottom:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

hope this helps!

This is on a clean install of 3.7.0 and a new site. We are in the process of getting the site set up and running.

The issue is that the site map is not being saved to the root, it is not being saved anywhere.

I have the chmod set to 777 on the data folder, I checked my providor to make sure they support mod_rewrite and they do. I have the .htaccess file set up just like this:

AddHandler x-httpd-php5 .php
AddHandler x-httpd-php .php4
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

It's not designed to save them to the root. Read the instructions - that's why you need to add lines to .htaccess - the files are saved to {forum_root_}/vbseo_sitemap/data/

I have a feeling this is a problem at the (relatively new) server I'm using but, not being very experienced with such things, would appreciate some advice please.

I'm getting this error when trying to access the reports page. I'm running vb 3.7.2. This used to work on 3.7.1 PL2... It seems to be creating the sitemap file ok.. There's nothing in the server error log that I can see about this error either.

Any ideas how to fix this?

EDIT: Disregard this - I fixed my error. The issue was caused by a change I had made in my .htaccess file. My primary domain is kv-guild.net and talkvirginia (the site I was having vbSEO issues with) is a subdomain. I want traffic to enter through talkvirginia.net (http://www.talkvirginia.net) so have rewrite code which ignores requests for talkvirginia.kv-guild.net and redirects to talkvirginia.net, however the change I made in my .htaccess file, I had it redirecting to talkvirginia.net/forum/. vbSEO didn't like that. LOL :) Thought I would mention this in the event someone else ran into the same scenerio.

ok I have a quick question or questions regarding this, my apologies before hand if this has been answered but now my head hurts from looking thru 40 odd pages.

Vbulletin 3.7.1 Patch 2
vBadvanced CMPS v3.0.1

Installed the sitemap back on 3.6.10
its keeping itself up to date but when I click 'show reports list' it goes back to login screen. Forgive me if I am losing it but isnt there a report there? what am I missing here?

I should probably add what I have done already, the basic browser things because that was my first thought, happening in both IE and Firefox. Uninstalled all the way and pulled the files and reloaded.

Thanks in advance

A site map is supposed to be generated?

I have to back into Google's tools to get the exact error but when I used the sitemap checker Google didn't recognize it.

Edit... here it is:

I deleted vbseo and re-installed it due to it not working........Now I get this error message from google: Empty Sitemap

How do I fix it?

I figured out why I got the message. I gave the URL of just the folder, not the actual sitemap....... Doh!! Now I get a 404 Not Found error message......... Anyhow, how can I get it to where I don't have to manually submit sitemaps?

upload the 2 folders that are inside the upload folder into your root directory instead of the entire upload folder.

Those are two different products - vBSEO Sitemap Generator creates sitemaps for the forum, while vBSEO is a product that has many features including URL rewrites.

Ok, I've solved it... I'm using vBSeo 3.2... so there is a file modification that must be done with vBseo 3.2.x

yes. I copied the .txt file to my root and then renamed it without the .txt

when doing this I was then able to log into my admin site reports but have all reports have been blank when i run them :(

WOW..that's harsh. It is a free plugin and yet you act like you deserved the prompt support. lol.. look at iojam activity, he was here almost everyday and answers almost everything asked. So, chill, he will answering you in a short while or you can just go to vbseo.com and ask the question there.

I'm sorry. I didnt mean for it to sound harsh at all. the only reason I ask is because he made this product available in the 3.7 forums.

I was NICELY asking if he is referring to all support/questions in that thread. I'm not demanding prompt support at all. just wondering if I should move my questions to the other forum.

iojam, please dont think I was demanding anything. I appreciate all your hard work. cheers

jlew24asu,

it looks like your host doesn't support mod_rewrite or rewrite rules are not allowed n .htaccess, you can check that as described here (http://www.vbseo.com/f77/how-check-if-mod_rewrite-working-my-site-21502/).
Also, I'd suggest to install vBSEO Sitemap Generator v2.2 that was released a couple of days ago: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=184573

but when I click on Your Google Sitemap Index URL:

I get Sitemap file not found

Why would this be

I did just install it a few hours ago.

do I have to wait for this or should it still find the file even if I have just installed it?

I have what might be a noob question, SIA (did a search, found nothing):

My site's setup is simple, a wordpress blog for my front pages, and a vBforum for my community discussions.

My question is: Can I have two site maps in different directories (i.e. Wordpress Sitemap Plugin + vBSEO)???

If not, what are some suggestions, so I can get my full site on one sitemap?

If not, are there any good tutorials to use the straight up python script distributed on code.google.com.

Is it possible to get an older version of this mod? The new one is just not working for me, due tu VBSEO 3.1 i guess.....it generates the sitemap, but doesn't log anything, nor ping the sites, etc...it haults somewhere, dunno why...

I would like to rollback but can't find the previous version.
