I installed it and looks work. Just two quoestion :
1. I installed it two days ago and I am going down in Google pages. Is it early to make decision about this product?
2. I see spiders as guest in my forum but there is no search engine "Bots Activity Log" in sitemap reports.
Pls share your experiences friends and tell me about "what's going on" Developer???

Upgraded, but have a problem.
I run sitemap generator and it went all well. When I click on the link of newly generated sitemap, I received error 403.
Then, I change the location for sitemap in the setting, and run it again. But same error occured. Found out that it generated the sitemap inside vbseo_sitemap/data folder..
I tried to access it via http, but still received error 403. the folder has been CHMOD to 777. Dont know why it cant be access.
can you help me with this vbseo?

Hello,
After my sitemap is generated the search engine ping always fails. Ive found that my host has firewall rules that stops outgoing requests :o
Google FAILED
Yahoo Disabled
Ask Disabled
Moreover Disabled
I therefore have to request that outbound connections are allowed to certain sites. Could somebody please confirm the DNS names that the sitemap generator pings?
Many Thanks

1. Yes, it takes time to see the results and it's never an immediate change.
2. That feature requires you to have "vBSEO (http://www.vbseo.com)" v2.4.1 or greater installed

you should leave "Sitemap Files URL" setting in options empty. If you ever change it, you should create additional .htaccess file in corresponding folder.

iojam, I leave the Sitemap Files URL blank. It generated the file yes, but when I click on "Your Google Sitemap Index URL: http://www.yoursite.com/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz" The link brought me to 404 page.

stop playing with chmod 777 noobs
Assuming this rude and ignorant comment was directed at me, folder permissions for the data folder were set to 777 (per the above who don't have a reading comprehension problem) and this error persisted.
In fact, unless the data folder has these permissions the sitemap generator does not build the sitemap at all as it cannot even write to the folder. This was not my problem. Again, those who read the nature of the error read where the files were fully generated but, for some reason this error persisted.
Problem was resolved by deleting the contents of the data folder and running the Sitemap generator again. Not sure what was causing the error but this action cleared it up.

Hello,

SemperFideles,
Sitemap generator runs fine but I'm getting errors when I try to view the sitemap:
make sure that vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder permissions are set to 0777 and all *files* inside data/ folder (if any) - to 0666.
shaynehammy My sitemap_index.xml.gz seems to be stored under forums/vbseo_sitemap/data
When i run the sitemap generator is says the file is under /Forums/sitemap_index.xml.gz
So do i manually have to move the file?No, there is an .htaccess entry to handle that - although files are stored in vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder, they still can be accessed via forums root folder.

That depends on what you had in .htaccess before, usually you want to combine them (you can add Sitemap Generator rewrite rules to the top of existing .htaccess).

I think this is a chmod problem, nor the log files are unwritable so there is nothing to read in it then, nor the files ins't readable and you cannot read in it, make sur to assign correct chmod permission in the /vbseo_sitemap/data/*.log, personnally I have them to a chmod 600 but if you are on webhosting shared I suggest you to chmod 775 all the /data/ folder recursively and pay attention to restrict web access to it with the htaccess deny directive.

sounds easy to fixe (the script can't write the sitemap compressed files)
chmod 775 the folder /forums/vbseo_sitemap/data/ and all files inside 775 and also make sure to deny web access to this folder with a .htaccess or directly within your server *.conf

Just "deny from all" is enough, the .htaccess is included in the zip package , in the data folder, this will prevent malicious web user to try writing in the /data/ folder which is often set to too much write permissions and this leave access only to the script accessing files without your webservers but localy. You can set the same .htaccess file in the /includes/ folder of vb for example, this is always good to restrict all folders (with chmods+web server directives) that are supposed to be called only with php.

I said 775 not 755 but if 775 fail, go on a 777 but thats really really not safe to do this, chmod 777 will probably solve your problem but then any guest is supposed to be able to write in /data/ so you should then double check if the http server correctly deny all access here. this is the most hacked door in a webserver. Best way to go around the nasty 777 is to find out under wich user/group your php files are executed and to chown the /data/ folder to this user then you can lower the 777

If you are on a shared hosting and not understanding very well how to play with chown/chmod commands, I think the best you can do is unfortunely with 777 and make sure the .htaccess file is always present in the data folder, this will deny attacks from the web for sure but the weakness is if another customer is hacked and a worms infects the machine, that worm will have a write access here, this is not really your fault but the webhost than runs apache as php module, if you are on a VPS or dedicated server then you have to learn how to run php as cgi and you can go down to a stricter chmod like Im doing with 750, you can go down to php files to 400, works fine here, but not simple & easy to setup all this, 777 saves time but not your ass heh ;)

Ok, Question...
Why is it that it makes the large files, in our case 100 of them with 50K in each, and Google says it only shows a MUCH LOWER amount submitted?
Example...
From Map Report - TOTAL URLS 5,086,481
Google Shows in Webmaster Tools - URLS Submitted 86,481 (Last downloaded 13 hours ago.)
If I go into DETAILS and look at a random sample of the file details in Google most show 0 URL's in sitemap....

Yet IN the the file that is on my server it shows all the data in each.
So kind of concerned tat maybe that Google does not like what is being made. Anyone have any ideas. Anyone else using a webmaster account as I am can care to look.

If you are running multiple servers with load balancer I suppose that googlebot might hit "wrong" server (not the one where sitemap has been generated).

Try by adding all your sitemaps which are in you index xml directly within the google master tool

This would be true except for the fact that in cases like this I make one master directory on our image server and then link the directories on each server to it. Thus all the servers have the same data directory. (Do the same for attachments, custom avatars, CSS files.) Thus not the case at all. The data is their.
Class101...Adding all the site maps are redundant. Google does find and use the list. Not to mention I have over 100.

Upload the verification file to your site.
Please upload the key file that you downloaded or created yourself at the root level of your site directory.
The expected file path is http://www.nokiasymbian.it/ns/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz/y_key_115b71d5ed5ca957.html .

sitemap_index.xml.gz isn't a folder!!!!!
about the auth file , just upload it in the exact same folder you have defined, wich must be from your example in ../ns/forum/
That's normal you do not see the sitemap_index.xml.gz in your forum root because the .htaccess inside the forum root does the redirect, if you have setup your rewrites correctly, all requests to /ns/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz must be forwarded to a php file inside the /ns/forum/vbseo_sitemap folder, and this last php file call then the sitemap from the /ns/forum/vbseo_sitemap/data folder . In short, if you request http://www.nokiasymbian.it/ns/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz in your browser and you have a 404 this is because you didnt configured the rewrite.
And also when you add a site to yahoo, add the link that point to the directory not the sitemap url, the sitemap name goes in the feed section.

class101

from your error message this is due to an invalid link passed to your forum root look
The expected file path is http://www.nokiasymbian.it/ns/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz/y_key_115b71d5ed5ca957.html
Yahoo think your forum root is http://www.nokiasymbian.it/ns/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz/ which is wrong and so on , you must delete this wrong website and create a new one with this directory url only: http://www.nokiasymbian.it/ns/forum/, you dont have to place the full sitemap link with yahoo, this is when your forum root is setup, then you just have to add a new website feed called "sitemap_index.xml.gz", only the sitemap name in the feed because yahoo knows the forum root you must have previously entered.

I think this is a chmod problem, nor the log files are unwritable so there is nothing to read in it then, nor the files ins't readable and you cannot read in it, make sur to assign correct chmod permission in the /vbseo_sitemap/data/*.log, personnally I have them to a chmod 600 but if you are on webhosting shared I suggest you to chmod 775 all the /data/ folder recursively and pay attention to restrict web access to it with the htaccess deny directive.
hai i have one .htacess file default in this root path /vbseo_sitemap/data/ and in the .htacess file am having this msg only (deny from all) is it correct and one more thing i cant change the permission of .log files in cuteftp software.....................

The forum path more precisely, if you're using the licensed product vbseo you must already have an htaccess in your forum root to rewrite urls, so instead of to delete the one from vbseo just open it and add at the end the sitemaps rewrite.

Yes vbseo is another licensed product they have made and probably directly imported the sitemap rewrite in it, to check if you htaccess is valid that's simple, just open it and if you do not have the lines highlighted in red, just add them.

Yes this is correct this is a securiy prevention in the case you setup too much restriction to the data folder, malicious hackers knows this folder could be hackable if it's not surveyed enough. If you cannot change the permission from your ftp this mean the user under which runs the ftp software isn't the owner of the files nor do not have enough access, you'll have to find out under wich user your ftp server is running, in the case of a shared hosting the ftp user is your ftp login name so you will probably have to change the owner of some files with "chown user:group files" command.

the forum root is the folder where you have lots of vb files like showthread.php,forumdisplay.php etc, you must have the .htaccess placed in the same folder, you don't know if you're licensed to vbseo ?? then you probably dont have it this is a 150$ software you buy on vbseo.com but the sitemap plugin is free and doesn't need it, they mention about the vbseo plugin because they are the same authors and this to provide a support to the free sitemap plugin to the paid vbseo plugin for vbseo customers because anyone that has buy vbseo has installed the sitemap plugin I guess.

if you dont have any htaccess file already existing in this folder then just upload the one you have in the sitemap install zip file, in the htaccess/ folder there is the .htaccess you need to upload to the forum root. After that chmod 777 the /data/ folder where are the logs files, make sure there is a htaccess file in the /data/ folder with the deny all directive to restrict malicious attempts and you are all setup:)

Hey,
I've been trying for ages but I can't get the sitemap to work properly with the rest of my site.
The site map generator has been perfect for a few weeks now spidering my forum pages and sending them to Google and the others. But the rest of my site is equally significant and isn't being sent as part of this sitemap.
Can somebody please explain to me in simple terms how I can get this to spider other parts of my site or include the rest in the sitemap?
Many thanks

GPTB,
vBSEO Sitemap Generator only includes forums URL in sitemap by default. You can add other URLs in extra-urls.txt file though and they will be included in sitemap as well.
Lombardo,
if you have mod_rewrite installed on your server, you should simply paste rewrite rules specified in installation instruction into .htaccess file. If it's not supported, you should contact your host to enable it.

i installed as per the readme file, and everything went ok
logged in to vbseo-map page, and clicked on "Run Sitemap Generator "
it generated the files successfully
then at the bottom of the page, when i click on "view details"
it shows me the stats of the links created
and there is links to the files, which the URL shows its in my root http://www.myforum.com/thefilename
however, when i click on the file, it shows me a 404 page not found
i found that the files are generated inside public_html/vbseo_sitemap/data/
what is wrong here?
one more thing, from what i understood, is that it notifies google of the changes, do i still need to add the sitemap in my Google Webmaster Tools ?

iettafune,
possibly your host disallows outgoing http connections for the scripts and so all ping requests fail.

sorry if this has been asked already and covered, but can someone briefly explain the differences between this and the vbseo that costs $149?
This only GENERATES a map to send to google and yahoo
but vbseo actually converts all your links on vbulletin to be keyword rich...
instead of showthread.php...blablabla this time it would be example www.domain.com/forum/threadnumber/something.html
which makes google and yahoo crawler index your pages higher because of the keywords
that's the difference
That's a rough explanation but check vbseo.com for more info

IMHO...
I have two sites, one with vbseo and this and one with just this. Being 100% honest Vbseo doesn't make a huge difference other than you can administer settings and monitor your site a lot easier. If you would have to struggle to afford it I wouldn't bother but if you have spare ?s go for it. It does have a lot of handy features.

I have vbadvanced installed in the root, so I setup the .htaccess to include /forums/ in it. I can access the xml.gz files just fine from the root, but when I try and access urllist.txt.gz, I get a "The webpage cannot be found" error. The urllist.txt.gz file exists in data just like the .xml.gz files.
http://www.broncosforums.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz works ok
http://www.broncosforums.com/urllist.txt.gz results in page not found
My .htaccess in the root (not forums folder) is:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(sitemap.*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ /forums/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
Any idea why I am getting an error?
Also, as I am using vBadvanced, I put vbseo_sm_vba in the addon generator modules and changed the sitemap file URLs to http://www.broncosforums.com. Is there anything else I should do to include my vBadvanced page in my sitemap? Do I need to add anything to the extra-urls.txt file?

just77me,
make sure that you set 0777 permissions for data/ folder.
tnedator,
you should use this rewrite rule:
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap_).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ /forums/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ /bbs/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
My forums are in the web-root/bbs folder.
Now google sees my sitemap and the url list, no problem.
But in the ACP under "vBSeo Sitemap Reports" when I look there it says my homepage is:
www.myforums.org/bbs whilest it should be www.myforums.org.
Also it says "Your forums sitemap index url: www.myforums.org/bbs/sitemap_index.xml.gz which also should be www.myforums.org/sitemap_index.xml.gz.
How do i fix it so vbSeo is displaying the correct url's?
By the way, does this make any difference if google is getting the sitemap in good order?
Or should I better point the sitemap to the /bbs folder so move my .htaccess file?

Got another question, how do I use the vbseo_sm_vba.php? Or is that being used automatically? I removed both the // in front of this line:
$vba_url = preg_replace('#[^/]*/$#', '', $vba_url);
Same question for downloads2.php. Both in the addons folder.

Hi I have a question.. I have this installed for 3 days, on the first 3 days I had about +150 URLs change per day.. And yesterday, I got a + 195 000 URLs change..
Is that good/normal? what does it mean?

I arealdy figured out my previous questions myself.
But there is a problem with the downloads2.php addon, this will give an error, maybe it's not up2date anymore? Becaue we already have updated Downloads II several times.
Can this be fixed?

i installed as per the readme file, and everything went ok
logged in to vbseo-map page, and clicked on "Run Sitemap Generator "
it generated the files successfully
then at the bottom of the page, when i click on "view details"
it shows me the stats of the links created
and there is links to the files, which the URL shows its in my root http://www.mysite.com/thefilename
however, when i click on the file, it shows me a 404 page not found
i found that the files are generated inside public_html/vbseo_sitemap/data/
what is wrong here?
My forums path is http://www.mysite.com/forums
- How do I have to configure the .htaccess ?
- What url should I submit to google : http://www.mysite.com OR http://www.mysite.com/forums
thanks

I did read them but I still have problems.
My server is MS Win 2003, and I don't have access to "httpd.ini". I used .htaccess in my http://root/forums and I changed the 'http://root/forums/vbseo_sitemap/data/' folder to 777 from my control panel.
Any ideas ?

No sorry, on windows you don't have any chmod 777 as far as I know that's only on Linux servers. So I wouldn't know.

I wonder if the coder stopped support over here, that's no good commercial for the big vbseo. It would be little effort to put the updated downloads2.php in the download packages.
It was already fixed in 2006!!!
Anyway I'm still thankfull for this mod though.:)

I don't have VBSeo, I only have this mod. Seems with the adjustment in this thread somewhere the downloads II addon works fine unless for a parse failure in the sitemap4.xml.gz.
But another problem now resides, since I installed this, Google Webmastertools gave me this:
Unreachable URL's (805) with reason "network unreachable".
All the threads in there are pointing to my whole site, thus to /forums and also /forums/archive so it seems google can't read my archive directory anymore. And I don't have a clue why.
Any idea's?
If I click a link which is in there, I can see the posts without problems.
The Webcrawl statistics give this error notices.

Nobody any clue? Also my sitemap is giving 1 error:
Line 99909 Parseerfout (Dutch for parse error), only in sitemap_4.xml.gz but I can't find anything.
Also in diagnostics under webcrawl (in google adsense webmastertools) my amount of unreachable url's is growing every day with error network unreachable.
I really need help with this otherwise I have to uninstall because this is killing my site on google.
Also these kind of links are being created wrongly:
http://www.mysite.org/forums/archive/index.php/index.php?t-1180.html instead of
www.mysite.org/forums/archive/index.php?t-1180.html (so 1times index.php too many).

sokorelis,
in case of IIS server you should setup rewrite rules in ISAPI_Rewrite module configuration. If you don't have ISAPI_Rewrite, you can manually move sitemap files from vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder to the forums root folder.
Black Tiger,

Black Tiger
02-13-2008, 03:21 PM
What is the error you get?
Either downloads2.php (adjusted with the text found here in this thread) or the vba addon is causing my last sitemap file to have a parse error.
This is wat my downloads2.php says at this moment:
$mods = $db->query("SELECT id,name FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "dl_cats ORDER BY `id`");
while ($mod = $db->fetch_array($mods))
{
$url = $vbseo_vars['bburl'].'/downloads.php?do=cat&id='.$mod['id'];
if(VBSEO_ON)
$url = vbseo_any_url($url);
vbseo_add_url($url, 1.0, '', 'daily');
}
$mods = $db->query("SELECT id as fid FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "dl_files");
while ($mod = $db->fetch_array($mods))
{
$url = $vbseo_vars['bburl'].'/downloads.php?do=file&id='.$mod['fid'];
if(VBSEO_ON)
$url = vbseo_any_url($url);
vbseo_add_url($url, 1.0, '', 'daily');
}
And ofcourse the problem described in post 620 about the rising amount of unreachable url's by Google's crawler, but that has nothing to do with the downloads addon.

Maybe he only views this thread once a month, I don't now.

Yes, you can make a cronjob for it. Normally by installation this cronjob would be generated automatically for version 3.6.8.
See section E in the readme.html in the docs directory, for how to put in a cronjob manually.

MySQL Error : Lost connection to MySQL server during query
I know not much about Mysql server, but this speaks for itself. Problem is you're losing the connection during the query. Maybe you can try to put persistent connections to on in the /includes/config.php.
$config['MasterServer']['usepconnect'] = 1;
I'm not sure if it helps, but trying can do no harm. If it's already on, try turning it off.
If this won't help, I don't know either.
Found also that all the php files in this mod were made using some Windows editor like Wordpad or someting like that.
Wenn looking in Editpad Lite, they can all be converted to "unix", and that's no good either. Should already be distributed this way. Using windows editor can cause the risk having unvisible layout signs in documents, which can cause linux configfiles cause strange things.
So the mod is very nice, the quality and support are bad. Sorry but that's an honest opinion.

Fixed, code over here was wrong, problem: missing html entry's in the downloads addon.
Now we are lucky to have such good coder as RSJelle who DOES know what the word "support" means and even fixes code-error for a mod which is not his.
Anyone else having problems with the downloads addon (for Downloads II by RSJelle), check this mod:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?p=1446414#post1446414
Threadnumber #2355
There's the solution to the downloads addon problem. Working like a charm now.
I'm going to click uninstall now, not because I uninstalled but because of the missing correct files in the download zipfile, the bad coded files (not linux but with windows editor) and the lack of support by the coder (last post by him 13th april 2007 almost a year ago?)
He at least lost 1 future customer for the commercial product.
Any other member here, thanks for trying to give me support with my problem.
iojam
02-19-2008, 01:46 PM
binkuang,
that feature is only working if you have vBSEO product installed additionally to vBSEO Sitemap Generator.
Black Tiger,
I'm glad you got it resolved! Btw, I'm providing "official" support for vBSEO Sitemap Generator mod here, so it's not left unsupported :)
The downloads mod add-on code included in the package was prepared for an older version (the one that was available at that moment) and new downloads mod release has db table names changed.
Black Tiger
02-19-2008, 02:06 PM
IoJam:
I'm sorry, I did not know you were providing official support over here, I thought only the coder was doing that, I already complained about it, cause I was going mad and did not know you took over, sorry.:(
It's great to here it's not left unsupported so I will click install again.
And I did not resolve the problem, RSJelle did.:)
The new mod indeed had db table names changed, but somewhere in this thread (I pointed to it in an earlier reply) somebody updated it but it still not worked with that now code (dl_cats and dl_files).
It would be a good idea to integrate the new addon in the release zipfile.
Also it would be a good idea to check the release php files with an editor like Editpad Lite because with almost every file you can use the "convert to linux" option, which means they are edited with something like Wordpad, which can cause strange things on some linux distro's due to the hidden layout signs wordpad generates.
Suggestion: If the release zip could be updated with these things, it would be fully up to date again and used without problems.

Hi folks, thanks for this mod.
I had been looking into sitemaps before finding this mod.
I've created a google webmaster account, found a website that creates a sitemap.xml for you and uploaded the sitemap.xml to http://www.domain.co.uk/sitemap.xml.
Then I found this mod, installed and it seems to be working ok. I get a ping ok message for all search engines and I get an email saying it's been done.
I've added a .htaccess file to my http://www.domain.co.uk/forums folder.
I've read pretty much this whole thread and it's only confused me more lol.
Should I remove the sitemap.xml that I uploaded to google the first time? Is this mod uploading a sitemap as well as the one I currently have?
How does google access the file uploaded by this mod if the map is at /vbseo_sitmap/data/sitemap_1.xml.gz? Does it not need to be at /sitemap.xml? Does the .htaccess file allow a 'virtual link' from /forums to the actual sitemap??
So confused! :confused:
Any clarification would be much appreciated!
Thanks
Glen
EDIT:
I've not added a url of http://www.domain.co.uk/forums to my webmaster tools in google and added the sitemap http://www.domain.co.uk/forums/sitemap_1.xml.gz and it's accepted it ok. So I assume that everytime this mod updates the sitemap, google will be able to extract it from that location.
Think I'm understanding it now. lol
iojam
02-20-2008, 04:22 PM
You should not remove your older sitemap, you can submit both to Google. Although files are stored in data/ folder, you can still access them via forums folder using rewrite rule in .htaccess file.

yes mod_rewrite is allowed on my server and the rewrite rules are allowed in my .htaccess file. I already rewrited my url so it changes from http://www.domain.com to http://domain.com
so i know its working, it just gives an error with this SEO thing.
if my forums is in a folder and not in the main public_html area such as
http://domain.com/forums/
i put the rewrite stuff in the .htaccess specifically for that forums folder in the forums folder.
RewriteBase /forum/
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
is that good?

momo2,
make sure that you have 0666 permissions for data/downloads.dat file.
mdcdeve,
does your sitemap looks ok if you open its URL in browser?
JVCode,
yes, there are no known issues with it.

zatzy,
if you have any files inside data/ folder, set them to 0666 too.
i put the rewrite stuff in the .htaccess specifically for that forums folder in the forums folder.Yes, you should put rewrite rules in forums folder, and do not forget about "RewriteEngine on" line.

When I go to view my sitemap via the url provided, it has this error:

I did add the proper lines to my .htaccess file, any ideas what's wrong?

Actually, I didn't set this part "Addon Generator Modules" I guess I have to? I thought it's optional.
Ok, well that made it worse. Database error while trying to generate sitemap.

Hi,
Does anyone know how to get this working with DownloadsII?
I've made the modifications suggested on page29 but they don't seem to be working.
I ran the sitemap generator and there were no urls to add.
I then added a test .zip to the downloads and ran it again.
It still shows as 0 new urls.
Is there anything else I need to do?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Please try to modify your vbseo_getsitemap.php file
FIND:

you should disable "Include Blog URLs" option.

i have a question or a kind of a problem.i have installed it all but i do not think it is all working properly.firstly mysite.com/public_html/vbseo_sitemap/data/
in this folder the sitemap.xml file does not exist there is only .htaacces file which inside it says deny all. and a index.php file.
Is that how it is meant to be as on google sitemaps under the webmaster website when i submitted the xml after a day google gave error saying
General HTTP error: 404 not found
We encountered an error while trying to access your Sitemap. Please ensure your Sitemap follows our guidelines and can be accessed at the location you provided and then resubmit.
so i think i may have gone wrong somewhere but not sure where.
Can i have help please .thank you

Kalina,
Please try to modify your vbseo_getsitemap.php file
FIND:
if($ext=='gz' && ($umatch[1] || !strstr($_SERVER['HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING'],'gzip')) )
replace with:
if($ext=='gz')
I tried that and when I click my sitemap url it then wants me to download it instead of letting me view it in the browser, so I can't tell if it looks right that way, any ideas? Thank you.

I installed the mod and I do not get a sitemap file generated in my www.mysite.com/forums/ directory. When I run the generator, I do not get any errors but when I look at the detailed report, all of my search engine pings fail. Any idea what is causing this?
Also, I am using vbadvanced so I have the htaccess file in my /forums/ folder and when i run the program, I can open my sitemap file using my browser but the url is www.mysite.com/forums/sitemap_1.xml.gz. How do I get a sitemap in my root directory - www.mysite.com/sitemap_1.xml.gz or do I even need one in my root directory. Sorry for all the questions but i am very new at all of this.

mahmuttunc,
did you generate the sitemap?
PAKIDIL,
make sure that you have set folder permissions as described in installation instructions.
zatzy,
please try the latest version of vBSEO Sitemap Generator (v2.1.)
Kalina,
just submit your sitemap to Google to make sure that it's processed correctly.
whitlecj,
sitemap is submitted as yourforumsroot/sitemap_index.xml.gz.
Please check this thread above for downloads add-on details.
alm3refh,
Try to change it to:
$pf = fopen(VBSEO_DAT_PROGRESS,'w');
fclose($pf);

mahmuttunc,
you should set folder permissions correctly to resolve the issue.
Borden,
yes - ".htaccess" file should be created as described in installation instruction.

yes - ".htaccess" file should be created as described in installation instruction.
I installed the ".htaccess" file that was in the 2.1 download.
This works when I click on it with my web browser: http://www.mysite.com/forum/vbseo_sitemap/index.php
When I click on this, it says, "Page Not Found".
http://www.mysite.com/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz
Is the Your Google Sitemap Index URL, not suppose to open with the web browser?
I ran the site map generator and this happenend:

Borden,
if you have created .htaccess as described and still get 404 error, check with your host that mod_rewrite is supported on your server.
alm3refh,
that is only a note sent by your host stating that script contains PHP mail() function call (to send you email notifications).
Pirat3,
looks good.

the mod works/pings successfully but when I try to manually submit to google or yahoo I get a 404 error
my host is 1&1
All I want to do now is manually submit my sitemap to google yahoo & msn
I installed the ".htaccess" file that was in the 2.1 download in my root directory.
MY SITE IS LIKE THIS www.mysite.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz
NOT LIKE THIS www.mysite.com/forums/sitemap_index.xml.gz
how can i get this to work when I submit it manually?

I finally figured out why the mod couldn't see my sitemap, it's because on 1&1 servers you can only execute rewrite rules from an .htaccess in the root where your domain is attached. Dumb but true, so I ran a test in a test sub-dir and this worked:
RewriteRule ^test/foo.html /test/bar.html [R]
However the vBSEO Sitemap code still doesn't, even when adjusted to the forums DIR:
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ /forum/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
Maybe it's because I need a /forum in the first part too but this stuff isn't exactly easy to understand. Suggestions?
UPDATE:
Ah this fixed it.
RewriteRule ^forum/((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ /forum/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
from reading this seems like 1&1 severs allow rewrite rules

make sure that you created .htaccess file in forums folder exactly as described in installation instructions. If it still doesn't work, check with your host that mod_rewrite module is supported on your server.

Thx I did b4 I removed it now I manually upload my sitemap to my root directory everyday after the 2am run.
If my server does not support mod_rewrite module what should I do?
BTW this is a great mod my UNIQUE VISITS has increased since installing it.
I recommend it

If my server does not support mod_rewrite module what should I do?The only option would be to manually move sitemap files from data/ folder to the forums root after they are generated in this case.

@newbuck
I was having a look at the config files for this mod and spotted this...
It's in the /vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_sitemap_config.php file.
define('VBSEO_SMDIR', dirname(__FILE__));
define('VBSEO_DAT_FOLDER', VBSEO_SMDIR . '/data/');
define('VBSEO_DAT_FOLDER_BOT', VBSEO_DAT_FOLDER . 'hits/');
define('VBSEO_DAT_FOLDER_ADDON', VBSEO_SMDIR . '/addons/');
//define('VBSEO_DAT_FOLDER', dirname(__FILE__) . '/../'); // choose this to place sitemap files directly to your vB root
define('VBSEO_DAT_PROGRESS', VBSEO_DAT_FOLDER . '/progress.dat');
define('VBSEO_YAHOO_SM', 'urllist.txt');
Maybe the red line is what you want to enable.

The install instructions say add "RewriteEngine On etc" to the end of your .htaccess but I already have "RewriteEngine On" at the start so can I leave it out and just add the "RewriteRule" line? Or does it make no difference?
Thanks in advance

I was having a look at the config files for this mod and spotted this...
It's in the /vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_sitemap_config.php file.Sitemap Generator will try to put all logs in forums folder as well in this case.
As a workaround to get it automatically updated, you can create symlinks in forum folder to the files located in data/ folder (if you have ssh access to your host).
iojam

Basit,
set permissions for data/downloads.dat file to 0666.
IRANCITY,
yes, it's compatible with vB3.7B5.
punchbowl,
you can leave it - there is no difference.

I've installed the sitemap generator and have imported the product and also configured the sitemap as per the default settings which assume http://www.xxxxxx.com/forum which work a treat, the generator generates the sitemap as expected.
Have just attempted to add the sitemap to Google using the following URL http://www.xxxxxx.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz via the webmaster tools, and encountered the following error:
1. I have created a Sitemap in a supported format. Help
2. I have uploaded my Sitemap to the highest-level directory to which I have access.
3. My Sitemap URL is: http://www.xxxxxx.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz
Example: sitemap.xml
General HTTP error: 404 not found
We encountered an error while trying to access your Sitemap. Please ensure that your Sitemap follows our guidelines and can be accessed at the location which you provided and then resubmit.
For information I am using vbadvanced as my homepage which links to the forum as per http://www.xxxxxx.com/forum and have set google webmaster tools to view http://www.xxxxxx.com rather than http://www.xxxxx.com/forum
I've viewed several of the earlier posts on here and have added the url for my site in the extra URL.txt page though assume it's not that txt file I should be modifying!
Apologies now, but I would appreciate it if you could provide me with plain and simple information on what I may need to alter in the files and folders because I feel like a fish out of water with these settings :erm:

Just an idea here which would reduce the workload on vBSEO and help all of us less tech minded in the install of the sitemap :cool:
Why not video a live install of vBSEO Sitemap for use with www.xxxxxx.com/forum and also a version for installing on www.xxxxxx.com when vBadvanced is used, and upload it onto YouTube - If you put a link for your site on YouTube you will also gain new traffic from the post :)
Either vBSEO tech could upload the video, or if someone else (a rival?) wants to gain some traffic from potential vbulletin users then I guess they could post the video :eek:

You should add your site as http://www.xxxxxx.com/forum in webmaster account and submit http://www.xxxxxx.com/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz as a sitemap.

Hi iojam and thanks for your reply, I was hoping to generate the sitemap from the index page generated by vBadvanced rather than the forum page.
At risk of sounding like a right n00b, why can't the sitemap be generated from the index page, is it really so difficult to adjust the settings?
I've noticed that I can add the string into the robots.txt file to inform search engines where the sitemap is but that doesn't help me with Google Webmaster which is currently looking for the sitemap in the index page - I appreciate what you are saying about adding the http://www.xxxxxx.com/forum in webmaster account and submit http://www.xxxxxx.com/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz as a sitemap.
Incidentally, is there any benefit to generating the sitemap from the forum page rather the index page created by vBadvanced???

I have adjusted the .htaccess lines for the /index.php page as follows...
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ forums/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
This goes in the .htaccess file in the root of your public_html folder.
This is the .htaccess lines I have in my /forums folder...
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
Hope this helps. :)

Pebbled,
you can move sitemap to domain root as described in http://www.vbseo.com/wiki/Sitemap:FAQ#How_To_Move_Sitemap_To_Domain_Root

Not quite, but if you hasve submitted your sitemap to Google, Yahoo etc then you should start to see an increase in spidering activity and better indexing of your site in the search engines.
It's not instant though...it can take many months to improve, but it will almost definitely improve.

mariocaz,
check the post above in this thread: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1393540&postcount=491
I didn?t find this part in my :
function vbseo_query_http($url)
{
..
}
I only found this part:
function vbseo_query_http($url)
{
return @implode('', file($url));
}
Is that ok?, to replace it for this part:
function vbseo_query_http($url)
{
ini_set('default_socket_timeout', 5);
$purl = parse_url($url);
$connsocket = @fsockopen($purl['host'], 80, $errno, $errstr, 5);
$start = 0;
$timeout = 50;
while($start < $timeout)
{
$start++;
if ($connsocket)
{
$out = "GET ".$purl['path']."?".$purl['query']." HTTP/1.1\n";
$out .= "Host: ".$purl['host']."\n";
$out .= "Referer: http://".$purl['host']."/\n";
$out .= "Connection: Close\n\n";
$inp = '';
@fwrite($connsocket, $out);
while (!feof($connsocket)) {
$inp .= @fread($connsocket, 4096);
}
@fclose($connsocket);
break;
}
}
preg_match("#^(.*?)\r?\n\r?\n(.*)$#s",$inp,$hm);
return $hm[2];
}
Confirm me.
Thank you a lot!! :)

Cool Beans! ;) Yeah, I've definitely seen a huge increase in spider activity. Lastnight I had 22 spiders on there just crawlin their butts off. lol
Everytime something is updated on the site now, another spider jumps on there. The only problem I'm having is I can't seem to upload my sitemap to Google or Yahoo. Seems they are expecting an xml file and all I see are compressed files sitting on my site.

Thanks iojam, I've finally gotten it working from the homepage rather than the forum after a bit of help from my hosting company who took a look at what I had done and moved the .htaccess file as per your instructions to the forum like you said :o
Then I added ANOTHER .htaccess file in the root folder using the following code (as you suggested) :o
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap_).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ forums/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
(NOTE: change the forums/ to whatever you are using and NOT the whole domain name)
Once I did this I went into the ADMIN CP > vBSEO Google/Yahoo Sitemap Generator and added the Sitemap Files URL to http://www.example.com then regenerated the sitemap
Have also gone to the Google Webmaster tools site and added the URL successfully using http://www.example.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz
I was originally failing because I was missing the point that I needed an .htaccess file in both the forum AND the root folder for this to work. :eek:

One question regarding the robots.txt file
In my particular instance where the sitemap is to all intensive purposes for the search engines in the root directory so that the sitemap starts from the homepage and not the directory http://www.examplesite.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz
Do I add the line of code at the bottom of the robots.txt file to read:
Sitemap: http://www.examplesite.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz
To anyone wondering why I wish to add the sitemap position in the robots.txt file, this is a way to tell the search engines where the sitemap is if you have one.

Any ideas why sitemap_2.xml.gz is OK but sitemap_1.xml.gz shows this error?
i'm always getting this error when browsing www.mydomain.com/vbseo_sitemap:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function vbseo_startup() in /home/user/public_html/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_sitemap_functions.php on line 56
Tried to disable vbseo but problem persist. Tried to change the previous suggestion of blog.php, but nothing:
Find:
vbseo_add_url(vbseo_any_url($vbseo_vars['bburl'].'/blog.php') , 1.0);
Replace with:
vbseo_add_url(VBSEO_ON ? vbseo_any_url($vbseo_vars['bburl'].'/blog.php') : $vbseo_vars['bburl'].'/blog.php', 1.0);
Any hint?

I posted this in another thread related to this MOD, but it doesn't really have responses there ... so if you don't mind I am going to repost here because I would really like to figure this out with peoples help :)
Here is my post:

Great MOD!
Question? Can I use this to create a sitemap for my whole site? I am a bit confused ...
I am using vbAdvanced (as my root) and vBulletin as my root/forum
I have this working for my forum, and seems to be working, but when I do searches for things that I "should" be pulling up in google, they aren't showing up? It has been about two weeks since I have been submitting these sitemaps.
I am wondering, do I need to submit a sitemap for my root folder as well?? (This mod seems to only make a sitemap for the http://www.mysite.com/forum and not for the root section http://www.mysite.com)
I guess that is where I am confused because I am thinking that this mod created a sitemap ONLY for the vBulletin forum. (http://www.mysite.com/forum)
When I have vbAdvanced in the /root (http://www.mysite.com)
and I would like to create a sitemap for the entire site? Even though I don't have toooooo much yet in the front page (aka vbAdvanced)
Let me know please ... thank you very much! :D

Katelynn, first off, take a look at, and sign up to Google Webmaster Central which can be accessed from this link http://www.google.com/webmasters/ from here, click on 'Sign in to Webmaster tools'.
Once you have submitted your domain and sitemap you will learn all kinds of stuff and errors that Google is encountering when visiting your site, along with tons of other really useful stuff!
As to the sitemap stuff from your vbadvanced homepage (which is the same scenario as mine), you will need to add another .htaccess file into the root folder with the following details:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap_).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ forums/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
And pay particular attention to forums/ because you may need to change this to 'forum' or whatever variation you are using to access your forum.
Please note that I'm still awaiting a reply back from vbSEO as regards the error Google has picked up on with the sitemap URL errors!

Thanks for the quick reply!
Cool, you have the same setup as me, so you understand what I am trying to do!
- root is http://www.mysite.com (vbAdvanced)
- forum is http://www.mysite.com (vBulletin)
When you say add "Another" .htaccess file into the root folder you mean one similar to the .htaccess file in my root/forum directory? accept with the changes you made above?
This is where I get confused ... I have this .htaccess file in my root/forum folder
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
What about the robots.txt file in my root folder? Should I add anything to that for the sitemap? I already have this at the bottom of my robots.txt file
Sitemap: http://www.mysite.com/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz
Thanks!!

Katelynn, I quite understand your comments, it took me some time to figure out what was going on and I'm still not entirely sure!
So, from what I understand, you have your website at www.examplesite.com where your vbadvanced page is displayed, and you have your forums for the site at www.examplesite.com/forums
From what I have read so far is that you have the .htaccess code already installed in the forums folder for rewriting the position of the sitemap - So leave that file where it is
What you need to do is create a new file called .htaccess by duplicating this .htaccess file, then placing it in the root folder, then edit the text within it to display:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap_).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ forums/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
As to the robots.txt file, this is telling search engine robots where the sitemap is.
After you have added the second .htaccess file into the root folder you can change the text in the robots.txt file to view the file in the new position, namely Sitemap: http://www.mysite.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz
Please note I am on a steep learning curve with this, and don't understand .php coding so have no idea what it all means, all I do know is that Google webmaster tools has located the file and has downloaded it (with an error message), so I've nearly cracked it.
I think the problem with this sitemap generator lies with the instructions which presume that the forum will be in the root of the site, ie on the homepage, rather than in a sub-directory.
Those who understand .php coding don't need instructions, those of us who don't understand .php coding need very precise instructions!
Once you have the Google webmaster account you can see whether Google is encountering any problems with the sitemap
How do I include my vBadvanced and vBgallery pages to the sitemaps ?
Thanks

Yes, you assume right about how I have my site setup:
www.mysite.com is vbadvanced
www.mysite.com/forum is vbulletin
Thank You for your input Pebbled ... I am trying your advice ... I am wondering if I should only be generating the ONE sitemap for the main page? Cuz in google webmaster tools, i essentially have TWO(2) sitemaps for www.mysite.com and www.mysite.com/forum but they are the exact same file?
Anybody have any input on this? I need to increase my rankings, and not quite sure how to do it ... with this setup!?
Thanks soooooo much!

I am concerned about the above post ... will having this setup hurt my google rankings?
... cuz I have two sitemaps submitted for ROOT and for FORUM but they are identical sitemaps created by this mod.
Sorry to sound so new, I am just not sure of the proper way to get my site in the search engines properly.
Thanks

Katelynn, I think you will find that you have two sitemaps after following the above because each has a upper limit of 20,000 URL's, so the overspill goes into the second sitemap, etc. if you take a close look at the numbers you will probably see 19,999 in the first.
My stats which I received in an email state:

Yahoo ping: Disabled.

Also note, the 2nd piece of code merely rewrites to the 1st - As far as I'm aware you're not actually creating a duplicated sitemap.
Like I said, if you have Google Webmaster installed it will tell you about any problems it's encountering - I'm still waiting for some advice from vBSEO ref the following error:
Sitemap included in this sitemap index
1 - 2 of 2
Filename Status
sitemap_1.xml.gz - Errors Details
sitemap_2.xml.gz - OK Details
When I click on the errors report it says:

This is not a valid URL. Please correct it and resubmit. Help

Guyz, I am having trouble ... I have been using this mod for 3 weeks+ now and my site is just not getting into google search engine. I search for words I KNOW are in my forum and they are not coming up in google?
They are not coming up in Yahoo either ...
What am I doing wrong with this MOD?
I have 1000 members on my site and almost 40000 urls that the sitemap is generating, off my forum.
Thanks for any help ... Please see my posts above to explain my setup (which is vbAdvanced ROOT and vBulletin FORUM)
Cheers!
