It seems I can add rows to the zoints_tag table and it just works. Which is great.

So... how about we add a userid column to the zoints_tag table?

Once we do that, we offer a maintenance tool that sets the historical data so that the userid is the one who started the thread the tag is assigned to.

What do we get from creating this column?

Personal tag clouds in our member profile page showing what tags I have tagged, or you have tagged.
Everyone can tag everything without restriction
Ability to generate stats to show who has tagged the mostSo we can make tagging more powerful by allowing anyone to tag anything, as well as making it a personal thing as people get their own tag clouds, and we get to incentivise those who tag by showing that they're doing it.

The ability to set default tags on a per forum basis? So that when you start a thread in a forum about "Gigs in London" the thread automatically gets given the tags "gigs, london" based upon a per forum setting within the Forum Manager of the AdminCp?

Not at this time. But we'll explore the feasibility of that as I can certainly see the usefulness.

You could allow people to search for tags by inputting comma delimited searches, splitting on the comma and adding additional where clauses according to the number of parts.

Very feasible, and easy.

The URL would probably have to allow additional folder seperation though so a search for "gigs, london" would result in a URL of "/forum/tags/gigs/london/" for the results.

I need to stop giving scope creeping this hack!

I don't think it does. The SQL side of things is pretty lean (though adding an index on the 'tag' column of the zoints_tags table will help fractionally), there are only 17 queries on my tag pages, a standard forum page has 15. And an explain of the page shows that the SQL is taking less time to run than that on a standard forum listing.

There is a lot more work in the PHP though, possibly room for optimisation there. But it's fractional and you'd gain very little for a lot of effort.

For an idea of this:
A standard forum display page:
Page generated in 0.25203 seconds with 15 queries
A zoints tag page:
Page generated in 0.21700 seconds with 17 queries

Ignore the minor difference... the point is that the load is almost identical in terms of processing time, and the SQL doesn't tax the server at all.

You certainly could exclude guests from viewing tags, but I cannot think of a benefit from doing so. You'd also be preventing Google spiders from seeing the tags, and frankly the potential for tagging to improve your Page Rank is pretty good, because they provide more context to the threads and a URL in which the context is present.

Yes it's possible, but seriously think about why you would want to do it when performance isn't a strong argument to use.

Seemed to do the trick. Something with AJAX still seems wonky, I have to refresh the page to see the tags. But overall this is a very nice hack.

Hmm, weird, now it seems to be back to, I enter a tag, nothing happens. Hit refresh and the tag didn't stick.

It would perhaps be nicer if this was automated, that the user doesn't have to enter any keywords each time they create a thread. But that the tags plugin actually generates these based on words from the thread title, first post, and with lower relevance the post replies to the thread.

let me explain my scenario:

I have a custom movie database script similar to IMDB and need would like the "discuss this movie" feature and believe tags would the easiest way to do it.

Is there a way to add the movie title as tag automatically so that I can put a new thread link with auto tag? Something like this 'crude' example

I installed this about 3 weeks ago and Google just picked up our tags pages. It added around 3,000 indexed pages, it's my opinion that this really does help SEO immensely. We also jumped up significantly in ranking with some nice keywords. Very nice hack, great work. :)

I have read the article DChapman links us to in the first page on the importance of tagging. I think there is no need to downplay traditional file system. Each system has its own advantages and disadvantages. for one thing, you can't tell the subordinational relations between tags in a normal tag system, not to mention Zonits tag system's inability to show any relationship between tags. It's not the way we organize things. How do you understand a concept? One of the ways is to understand its parent-concept or child concept or the substitutional instance of a concept. The other way is to understand its related concepts, including contradictory or other relevant concepts etc..

The personal Brain (http://www.thebrain.com/products/personalbrain/support/tutorials/pbtour.html/), a mind mapping software used in the DVD verison of Encyclopedia Britannica and Webster Dictionary, shows how it's possible to merge both "tag system" and "file system" together. Each central bubble in the brain is linked to two kinds of bubbles, parent or child bubbles on top/ below, and related concept bubbles on the left. The former resembles to a file system while the later a tag system. This mind mapping system is a network, contrary to a linear, one-level system in Zoints tag system.

For the Usergroup based Favorite personal tag which was mentioned before, its' pretty self-explanatory. It's just an additional feature only. I hope DChapman will put more effort in building a related tag system. If Zoints can merge both "file system" and "tag system" together like The Personal Brain does so that not only related tags are shown but also sub-tags are shown, that would be great!!

How to define "related tag" properly? thread tag cloud? It's another challenge for Dchapman.

Despite the "criticism" above, I love zoints tag system. It's something I think we should add to make it better.

All you put was "followed the steps carefully but did not work". You've then proceeded to insult DChapman and Zoints for not providing support, when they so very clearly do.

You need to say:

1) What does not work.
2) What error messages you are getting - exactly, pasted from the screen
3) If there are no error messages and things are just missing, which things are missing


Just saying "does not work" is unlikely to get a response because nobody knows what the problem is.

Yet if you click Tags in the top menu, search for 'super'... you'll see that 'superlong' is returned in the results, but clicking on it triggers the 403.

Why would this be? Why would a tag return a 403?

This is NOT a bug.

It's because of the word 'perl' being in the underlying querystring. I have a lot of server defenses and this one I put in place ages ago to defend against the PHP vunerability that was bouncing around two winters ago.

Anyhow, amusing PM from and to phlogiston on the matter, who I have to thank for finding it and reminding me of it:

I had a muck around trying to narrow down the 403 and I'm pretty certain it's from "perl" in the tagname (sniperlong 403'd as did a couple others) - do you have a forum named that which vbseo is trying to redirect to or a server setup which could use it as a special directory name or something? :S (servers are beyond my knowledge)

btw - I totally apologise if I may have killed your server by attempting going to http://www.bowlie.com/forum/tags/perl/
I was trying out a few tags and everything was fine until then. Afterwards server death :(

That was indeed the solution, and thanks so much for hitting it several times :)

Oh, and the server is fine... it just added you to the iptables and blocked you. In 15 minutes the block will be lifted. It's a set of defenses to stop any DoS or bot attack. I'd just totally forgotten about it :)

Yes, old threads can have tags auto-generatd via the words in the title. Screenshots showing this are in the first post.

Now that i have auto tagged all 90,000 threads written by my forums 25,000 members

I want to allow two types of non moderators to tag OLDER threads...

1) Long standing members who volunteer to help me organise tag categories and tags threads

2) My advertisers who have their products discussed in the forums, to allow them to tag threads about their products (especially the two word product names, which have not been represented well by the auto tagging process)

My question is how do I allow these groups to go back and tag old threads?

Do they absolutely HAVE to have full moderator status? :surprised:

Is there some safe 'moderator light' status I can TEMPORARILY give people to 'go tagging'?

Can I create a user group with no extra powers, except the power to tag?

Tricky thing is we have a moderators only forum, and I wouldn't want either of these tag team groups to be able to read it..

Like when you are searching for a name in the search window of VBulletin forums.... how about an auto word creation pop up for tagging & tag searches?

So for example when you typing in the text characters when searching tags or creating a new tag...

Thats why I want my forums tags to be moderator only. I would also like to nominate trusted member voulenteers with 'tagging permission' - to go tagging older threads.. My forum is a technical / tips forum - so some control is a good idea lest the inexperienced newbies ruin things...

These could be a list defined by each individual forms moderators or site admin.. acting like a 'please look here first' area, a 'best of' area or a 'get a feel for the vibe of this forums direction' area.

It would be cool if the list was clearly prominent, proudly displayed. Perhaps as a SIDE BAR.

This would help moderators provide instant information resources that they feel their forum visitors might need...or perhaps should have a look at before posting..

GREAT plugin, but could get some additional features. :)
Some ideas, maybe not all of them thought till end.

1)

Right now I show 100 tags per page. I show only one page, with A till Z, because even astro and zero can belong together in seo aspects.

These are rather too less than too many in the main tags index found in the navbar.

I would prefer to have only 30 in special forums, but 300 in the main index, just a different number, because of the design, 100 tags look like too many in subforums.

2) size of tag words.

In the main tag index the size is different depending on how often a tag is used. This looks great !

But in special forums they have all the same size. It would be perfect to have different sizes optionally even on top of threads, but at least in special forums. This might be less important than 1).

3) Character replacement, known bug and feature request.

This doesn?t work if I add new tags to an existing thread manually. One special German letter is transformed to four or five very special "nonsense letters".

In other cases it works - ? becomes ae like wanted, when I automatically create tags out of old threads, then it works, and also when I create new threads and add tags before sending/saving, then it works, too.

I guess this the best solution to have URLs.

But if this is possible, with unicode or however you coders do it, it would be perfect to really use it only as URL replacement function, and still to show the native letters in tags in the forums.

In German it?s not a very big issue, just a design question, because German has only few extra letters and people are used to see them like ae or oe in URLs, (Still, ? and ? look much better for German eyes in forums), but in French or even in Russian it becomes possibly rather unreadable, even though I already saw Russian in Latin letters. :-)

It would perhaps be nicer if this was automated, that the user doesn't have to enter any keywords each time they create a thread. But that the tags plugin actually generates these based on words from the thread title, first post, and with lower relevance the post replies to the thread.

Having the tag cloud in the search menu would be nice as it consolidates search options.

Other things that would be helpful:

Instead of a tag cloud have a multi-choice check box search. I am using a restricted set of keywords for tags so that information is properly organized. With a multi-choice is allows people to search for more than one tag thus narrowing searches.

Also restricting the tag cloud and tag addition to certain usergroups.

Allowing capitals in tags. (ie "Zoints" instead of "zoints")

ok, found that if you embed the thing into the first post of the thread then if you try and submit a new tag it thinks you're trying to moderate a thread. the work around is something i'm working on now. i'm gonna try and get the form to be a drop down ala the reputation for AJAX users and a separate form for non-AJAX users.

That's what is taking a long time with the new build. We're working to provide proper language support. The problem we've run into is the fact we have tags in the url so we're having to provide quite a few options and write a lot of new code. But by the time we're done, your language should be supported. :)

Very strange. Large forums such as http://forums.livingwithstyle.com/tags are operating ok. We'll look into if there are any slow queries though and get back to you when we know more.

You likely added a trailing slash in your vBulletin admincp > vbulletin options > Site Name / URL / Contact Details > Forum URL.

Get rid of the trailing slash if you have one there.

this is hackers that trying to hack your board. I have the same situation with this problem around 1.5 month.
They tried to hack board for bugs in forums engine phpBB etc. so... right now this is not danger, because we use vbulletin.

For tag which does not exists and user tries to type in this tags, this should re-direct by-default (301 redirection) to main clouds pages.
(do consider implementing SEO for navigation pages as well)

(Tag which does not exists appear as direct link at the moment, which is bad for SEO)

While Importing I have added following numeric values to stop/ignore lists 1, 2, 3, 4 ... but this still appear as live tags (very bad)

couple of times if the tag is a mix of numerics and alphabetical charachters which shows more then 100 + thread results, instead of first page this directly goes to last page.

I'll add my suggestion here.

If specific user groups are going to be allowed to add/remove tags, then I think logging all actions in the moderator log would be very helpful.

I would forsee allowing certain users to be taggers... but if there is no log you can't tell if someone's causing problems.

Seem I have a problem with tags with numbers in them. For instance. One of the tags is 360. In the tag cloud the 360 turns into a 0 and when you click on it this message is received.

I've made a mistake I believe. I think that I selected all forums to not display the tags, thinking I was enabling tags on them. So I then went and tried to reupload the xml file via the mange products option and I got the following error

The only reason it wouldn't show is if the pertinent xml file wasn't uploaded via FTP. Doublecheck all the files you uploaded.

Members on my forum want a "favourite tags" option.

What they want is a place in their control panel to enter a list of tags, that then appears on the forum home as a list of shortcuts.

Essentially, every user gets their own list of virtual forums which they are interested in.

This is how it was described to me:

Uninstalling this hack not clean. After uninstal version 1.2.1 I still have table in DB called zointstags_search. So, you need to fix your uninstall code to remove this table also :)

The good news is that the links are rel no followed so it isn't going to hurt you.

The bad news is there isn't a whole lot we can do. We created a hook so that devs can create plugins for their software. Without a vbseo license or access to the code, we can't efficiently troubleshoot the issue.

Members on my forum want a "favourite tags" option.

What they want is a place in their control panel to enter a list of tags, that then appears on the forum home as a list of shortcuts.

Essentially, every user gets their own list of virtual forums which they are interested in.

This is how it was described to me:


I'm not sure if that's the best place to surface it (if they've got a lot of favourite tags it will be cluttered) but it's certainly a great idea.

i've used this mod before on vbulletin 3.6.3 without any problem whatsoever. i just installed it on 3.6.4, though, and it's now allowing me to enter tags. the AJAX does not work (when i hit the add tag button the page reloads) and the tag itself does not appear on teh thread page or on the tags page.

i am using zoints tag v1.2.1. this is not related to the above posts/below posts tag placement issue, as the issue persists in either scenario (i tried both).

any idea how this can be resolved? eager to use this fantastic mod! :D

It should work fine with 3.6.4. A few things:

1. Please double and triple check that you uploaded all the files.

2. Are you using a custom style or the vb default? Do you do the template edits automatically?

3. Are you 100% sure you downloaded this 3.6.x version and not a 3.5.x version?

Thanks for a GREAT mod. Is there a way to make the "add" tag box above the first post of a thread available for normal users as well and not just for mods? I only want mods to be able to delete a tag, but I want my whole user base to be able to help adding tags to existing threads, which is now impossible, since they cannot edit their first post.

Any ideas?
