Wow this thread is still going... I guess I should make some form of announcement...

There's good news, and there's bad news.
The bad news is that it's not going to be freely available here, due to the sheer amount of time I've put in it.

The good news is that I am working on v4, and it is shaping up to be awesome. Not necessarily with features alone, but because it's module based. What it means is that if you want only, say, support for Guilds, and you don't care about Battles or Items or any such things, you can get only those two features.
You're not paying a huge premium for features you don't want, and you're not bogging your forum down with queries for features you don't want.

Since I'm barely done with the Core (which is nothing beyond character creation), and even that's not fully ready for all the modules I'll be writing for it over time, I don't have any time frame or pricing (not that I would be allowed to mention the latter even if :p). All I can say is, it's going to be quite reasonable, and you will be able to pick up every single module without feeling like you just bought something that should be delivered to you via a Concorde with fox skin seats and a parade of dancing girls.

v4 is also going to be easier to install, and I've scrapped the installer used in v3 in favour of vBulletin's own product installer system.
Thus far, nothing is requiring template changes either.
Additionally, it's not going to require an external money modification to work (but I'll probably add support for it at some point in the future), so none of the configuration hassle that's apparent in this thread.

You can check the progress on the RPG via the site I have listed as my Home Page. Just keep in mind:
Please don't join there just to PM me asking for details or updates or anything. When there's updates available, a post will be made in the RPG forum on that site.
Oh, and don't join there to tell me I suck for "selling out" either; I have the banhammer and I'm not afraid to use it =P

Revan,

I have to say THANK YOU for coming back and letting us know that something is being worked on. Recently, our current verson of your hack has had to be disabled due to it messing with our 3.5 vB showthread.php...and it's one of the most popular features of our board.

If there's any way you can keep it so that it works with the 3.5+ series I would sincerely appreciate it. I'm not sure if that's doable, but there are alot of us still using the older versions.

Still, and regardless, I can only wish you the best...you have truly made an exceptional mod, and I know tons of us are happy to hear this announcement. Good luck, and I'll definetly be paying attention. Mahalo!

I hope there will be a way to migrate users experience points and perhaps automatically sell everyones equipment prior to an upgrade to 4. I will not mind paying for a robust RPG.

I didn't have any immediate plans to provide an upgrade path from v3 to v4, since it's a vastly different mod where very little will actually seamlessly port.

However, I might look into creating some form of importer - though it's going to be filled with a fair amount of default values, I reckon.

An importer with many default values or even just a way to initially distribute base exp. based on post count would be fantastic. I just don't want everyone who worked on their existing RPG characters to feel like they've just been wiped.

I'm very much looking forward to the new product!

An importer with many default values or even just a way to initially distribute base exp. based on post count would be fantastic.A "Rebuild EXP" feature for re-calculating all users' RPG levels based on their current post count was always going to be included in the new Maintenance area.

I just don't want everyone who worked on their existing RPG characters to feel like they've just been wiped. What I meant was, equipment. Not only does that depend on having the Items plugin installed, but I'm relatively certain that that will be different enough from v3's equipment system (even if we discount the fact that the Stats system - meaning how Defence and such stats are calculated - is 100% different) so that writing an accurate importer is going to be difficult.

swiftor
03-09-2009, 04:33 PM
Understood. Might there be a way to force everyone to sell their equipment prior to switching to the new version? If not, I will ask folks to just start selling their equipment a week prior to the switch over.

Thanks for the replies, I'm very much looking forward to the add-ons!

Revan

The only way I can see would be for the importer to just calculate how much the equipment would be worth in the itemshop prior to removing them, and adding that amount to the users' gold amounts respectively.

I'll probably end up contacting you when it's time to write the importer, since you're the one with the most interest in it and also having the most extensive v3 setup I know of XD

And thanks Revan for starting back up on this. I look forward on seeing the new version. :)

If that's much trouble to do, I'd say don't sweat it, I'll just send out a mass email to users letting them know to sell their goods by X date.

I'm really looking forward to v4!

Small update just to keep you guys in the loop:
I haven't been able to do much work on actual features for v4 this week, due to some heavy restructuring work being needed on my forum.

What I spend my spare 10 minutes doing, however, is adding small "smarties" to the Guilds plugin.
For instance:
You'll be unable to delete, change the guild rank and change the guild affiliation of a character that's a Guild Master. If you could, then you end up with a guild without a Guild Master until you manually gave another character the Guild Master rank.
Which could potentially be never.

Another example:
When you change the Guild Master via the Edit Guild functionality (you'll also be able to do it via a Guild Members page, to mass-change guild ranks), the GM you're demoting will be automatically assigned the second highest rank (of course, this is guesswork, but it's better than nowt) in the guild.
If you wanted to demote the GM completely, you'd be better off doing it via the Guild Members page, as there you'll be able to select from a dropdown of all available Guild Ranks, as well as "Unguilded".

Small things like that. Such things that aren't strictly needed, but just gives off a feeling of higher quality IMO.

I am using 3.7.5, but am considering moving to 3.8.1 after I make sure all my mods will be ok at that version. As for RPG version, should be the latest 3.5.1 version plus patches posted in earlier posts (to my knowledge, those patches were required for it to work on newer versions).

Here's a small screenshot that should indicate how much effort is being put into just one of the modules for v4:

I'll post back with more details (and screenshots) once the module is complete.
Currently it sits at approx. 40%; I've done all GM management except
Guild Applications
Guild Invites
News Management
Add
Edit

Delete After that, all these features need to be duplicated in the front-end on a per-guild basis, based on permissions of the character the user has selected.

Heck mang, my version of the RPG killed my forum...you should have seen it. You want to talk about extensive...the amount of work I did on it was pretty nuts. Everything from custom style design, to gazillions of armor and weapons as well as avatar work.

It's a shame that I had to uninstall it...the forum wouldn't work with it installed, and people were getting upset. I hope this new one does well, it was quite fun. Thanks!

You seem to be the kind of person that would enjoy tinkering with the stats formulae as well ;)

I have 6 files left to do in the Game Master CP for the Guilds module before it's time to get started on the front-end.
So things are progressing :)

can you upgrade this hack to 3.8.x version?

ArchangelX
05-05-2009, 11:31 PM
Good to hear, Revan...with RPG Inferno dead, this seems to be the only hope for us on the horizon. The last iteration of this one was only removed because 3.8.2 didn't like it at all and I couldn't figure out how to get it to work. So here's hoping this new version is compatible. I really love the guild idea...so keep up the good work!

Revan

Since it's still a ways off, by the time it's ready for public consumption vB4 will be out (if not 4.1), so I'm mainly going to be aiming for vB4 compatibility.

It's a load of hassle to support two versions, and by then most of the more popular mods will also have moved to vB4, so there's little reasons not to upgrade :)

EDIT: After having seen how people reacted to the postbit I originally created for v4, I've decided to revert to a look similar to v3.
So, here's some screenshots of the revised postbit in v4. Thanks to swiftor for still running v3 so I could dig up the HTML code I used easily :p

Collapsed View:

The magnifying glass icon will take the user to the extended RPG information page, which in this version will be fully integrated with the tabbed profile system found natively in vBulletin, rather than opening a pop-up window.
This decision was made because pop-ups are generally annoying, and because having a tab in the profile allows for much easier extension by modules (Guilds, Items, Battle, etc) than a fixed-size popup would.

Don't worry, it opens a new tab in the browser, so you won't face angry messages from users saying "OMFG I JUST LOST MY HUGE EPIC RP POST JUST BECAUSE I WANTED TO CHECK OUT MY OPPONENT, WTF YOU SUCK" ;)

I didn't make the icon bar in the bottom collapse alongside the main content because that would just cause extra clicks for people who just don't want the in-line display of RPG info - should you disagree with me and want it collapsed, it's a simple template edit to move the image bar into the rest of the fold (pun intended).

And finally, a note about the collapsing:
It's unfortunately not feasible to create a system where collapsing one member's RPG info collapses it globally for all posts made by this member.
Not only does that produce XHTML validation errors when this member posts more than once per page, but the JavaScript code vBulletin uses for collapsing only collapses the first post.
To compensate, I'm going to create a setting that allows users to see the collapsed postbit by default, so that they can expand it as they desire.

Hope you liked this little update, more to come in the future once I finalise the design on the Guilds front-end.

it seems like everything is going great with the new version. I know this is too early to ask and it might also annoy but when can we expect the release of this new version of this great mod?

Revan
05-07-2009, 05:46 PM
It is a bit early to tell; I'm rebuilding everything from scratch, which takes its time.

Also, it's not going to be released here, which is why I'm making it in different pieces (modular) - so that people won't need to pay for a complete package that they may only use some parts of.

I'm not posting about it here to generate hype or anything, just because the people who still follow this thread are the ones who would care about the v4 in any form, so yeah.

I just installed the mod. Everything works except for the Admin CP, I cant see the navigation bar and when I go to the URL manualy like "admincp/rpg_index.php" it shows a blank page. But when I go to an url from the mod outside of the Admin CP it works like a charm. Can someone tell me what's wrong?

I'm running VBulletin 3.7.3 and the RPG Integration Hack is the latest version on this site with the 3.6.x patch. I also re-uploaded the files into the site just in case and re-imported the mod manually. None of this things worked.

Any kind of help with this problem would be great.

The project's been put on hold until vB4 is released - I would need to re-do everything anyway, so no point in doing duplicate work :p

This hack is working almost perfectly in vb 3.8.4

Little issue: It never showes RPG menu at navbar... yeah, that's all I found testing this hack.

I think you can make your own menu right?.
If you go to http://www.mysite.com/FORUM_PATH/rpgmanua.php you'll be able to see all needed links to make your menu.

I hope this info would be useful for you.
