A little update...
I've been playing around with the code..it seems the issue of random threads being loaded has to dowith the hook named "vRewrite Redirects" in global_start.
I disabled it and it works like a champ
I'm off to 2nd job and will play around with the code to see if I can help witha solution :)

I am still having problems witht he username -- go back a few posts for more details:)

Immortal-
A moderator brought to my attention that there is sitill a merge bug.
If you use inline merging it works great, however, if you try and merge to a thread (by entering the URL) it gives an error.
I've been trying to find a hook to take care of the 'conversion' but have been unlucky.

Outstanding bugs I can think of:
1) Merge issue (inline works okay)
2) FIXED - Incorrect member.php linking
3) Markforums - still produces an error (I think I know of a fix)
4) FIXED - Directly clicking on a THREAD from index.php produces incorrect thread linking (traced to URL rewriting).
5) TEMP FIXED those running vbGallery (and possibily other scripts which use /dir within forums dir) will have problems - cause of this is headinclude's baseurl
I'll try and see what I can do (though I doubt it will be much!)
thanks! :)

EDIT: #5 added, fixed #2

Hey Immortal

I was thinking about about a work around for the IE bug (attachment timeouts). Why are making newthread.php & newpost.php SEO friendly? Spider bots cant access these parts of the site anyways, so it seems logical to exclude them. By not including this, I think you should automatically resolve the issue.
What do you think?

Immortal
02-25-2006, 09:21 PM
They can't actually post, but they still can see the URL. So I thought it would make sense just to rewrite them. But, that's not the attachment problems with the IE. It's just because it's in a different directory, and IE doesn't recognize base href for that section of vB.

Hmm, I never had an incorrect user problem. The links always brought me to the right place I think. Or, maybe not?? I can't remember.

YAHOOOOOO!!! This sounds like it will also fix the problem with the links on the front FORUMHOME not working (since those are NEWPOST links) right?

I really hope this works!! :) I was just thinking how my site is growing, but only a couple of members each day. I'm nowhere in the search results and the forums I've visited tell me exactly why. I don't know how they can tell, but I've asked and some people tell me which listings of mine are in the search engines and which listings google is having trouble with, etc. (ie. I was told it doesn't like my link www.420boards.com/420kid for my profile). This should fix everything right up guys!!

Thanks so much everyone (in advance) haha.

Once this problem is fixed, I guess the next few steps will be to add some features to the product. :) For instance I think everyone is always saying that you know which commercial seo product doesn't just rewrite URLs, it also does this and that and that and this, etc.

Because this is a free product and not commercial, is there any problem with us finding out which great features they use and implementing our own version of some of the features? I would imagine that's ok, because how can they say that no one else can do something like this, when they won't even let sites like mine buy their product.

I'll see if I can find any ideas.

I don't think I was having all of those problems, I think the problem that I saw was with the NEWPOST links on the front bringing everyone to the wrong place. So I can't wait to see what you did.

I just took out that part of the .xml and from the .htaccess file and it does work (doesn't rewrite the front NEWPOST urls) woohoo. I scrolled down to see that it also didn't rewrite the NEWPOST urls on my xstats hack on the bottom of my site (lists recent posts, new members, top posters) which is good also.

However for some reason hovering over the usernames I saw that they were rather messed up. Some blatanly said other peoples user URLS rewritten, I saw mine for instance on someone elses, etc. I disabled the rewrite thing again to check to see the original .html output for the xstats on the bottom of my site and see it's just a simple member link http://www.420boards.com/member.php?u=1 and they all go to their correct locations.

Once rewritten the usernames on the rest of the site seem to work, but on the xstats I've noticed otherwise. I'll look further into this.

*EDIT* It looks like I see the bug in other places, but the only other place I found so far is the moderators box in a forum where you have several moderators. :) I can let that one slide somehow, I can disable showing mods if I have to. :)

Also it looks like when it's happening it's using someone elses rewritten URL and attaching the user ID to the end of an existing persons. For instance. My rewritten URL is this: http://www.420boards.com/u-420kid-1.html but I see another member has this: http://www.420boards.com/u-420kid-1.html4 or http://www.420boards.com/u-420kid-1.html8

:( Any ideas? As I said you can see instead of their userid in these cases generating their own rewritten url, it uses mine and spits it's own user id to the end.??

Yeah this has been fixed. It was happening because the text was matching
member.php?u=userid

when it should have matched something like
member.php?u=userid'

That';s why you sometimes see a number after the .html -- it wasn't matching the full userid which caused this :)

Hey Immortal,

I was just noticing a problem with trying to delete a single post and seemed to have the same error performing other moderation things. I wonder if it is because I took out a line or two of the .xml file hahaha. I didn't see this reported in this thread, but I saw someone asking in vbulletin.com yesterday the same error message as me.

I'm getting an error message at the top of the forum during those things, apparently someone else on vbulletin.com is too: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=176653

Has anyone mentioned this before? I tried looking at my inlinemod_start hook code and saw this:
if(preg_match("(t-)([A-Za-z0-9\-]+)-([0-9]+).html$", $vbulletin->GPC['mergethreadurl'], $tmatches))
{
$vbulletin->GPC['mergethreadurl'] =& 'showthread.php?t=' . $tmatches[3];
}
Is this valid?

Hi

Just a few suggestions:

The f is not really needed in the the forum display url: techhelpforum.com/f-windows-xp-11.html (in fact it would be better if it were not there from a search engines perspective)

The t is also not really needed in the thread display url: techhelpforum.com/windows-xp/t-how-to-do-a-repair-install-of-xp-439.html (again, it would be better if it were not there)

However the forum number should be present in the thread display url - because many of us make slight changes to our forum names from time to time so making sure the forum number is the 'key' should ensure no deadlinks if we change forum titles in the future :)

Would also be beneficial if the latest post links show the same urls as the main urls (and not a new url eg techhelpforum.com/windows-xp/t-how-to-do-a-repair-install-of-xp-439newpost.html like some rewrites do). So techhelpforum.com/windows-xp/t-how-to-do-a-repair-install-of-xp-439.html#post522484 is preffered.

Would also be great if once a reply is made the person is directed back to the mod-rewritten url (as going to a showthread.php url might make google think its duplicate content as adsense will pick up the url..).

Sounds like a nice hack! Look forward to seeing it develop :)

The t-, f- and p- helps vRewrite tells which is which. There's really no other way to accomplish this without changing a good majority of the script.

As far as newpost is concerned, that part doesn't have a problems as you will get redirected back to the t- (not the p- mind ya ;)). SEOs really doesn't see this as duplicate content.

As far as the reply URL is concerned, make sure you have vRewrite Redirects enabled.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me.

Is it possible to move these to the end of the urls instead then?

What about renaming forums/sections do the old urls using old names find their way to the correct thread once a forum is renamed?

Thanks.

It is stable enough to run on a live board, only a few minor annoyances are going to be fixed.

Uhhh....weird, it should work? There is a known bug with newpost, but that's only that it doesn't go to the correct page, and sometimes it goes to a random thread. I'll try and post a temporary fix in a few hours until 1.01 is released.

in 3.5.4 I get this error:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING, expecting T_NEW or T_STRING or T_VARIABLE or '$' in /home/ttuohy/public_html/forums/inlinemod.php(220) : eval()'d code on line 3

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/ttuohy/public_html/forums/inlinemod.php(220) : eval()'d code:3) in /inlinemod.php on line 627

I had to turn off the "merge fix" in the plugin manager of inlinemod_start hook. Is this bug known? I mean, the merge fix is suppose to fix the merge issue but it creates an issue when someone tries to delete a post/thread I believe...

And when is the new version supposed to be released?

You also need to fix the changing of skins while viewing a thread. It just refreshes it and not changing it.

Hi.
This is the first hack I've ever done to vBulletin and now I'm hooked! So congrats to the authors, you have taken my vb hack virginity :)

I do have one "issue". Everything works fine except this. Whenever I go into a forum or a thread, clicking the Main Forums link at the top left corner (here at this forum it is the one that says "vBulletin.org Forum") causes me to go to mywebsite.com instead of mywebsite.com/forums. When I go into my admin cp however, it knows that my forum is /forums so I'm confused. Please help.

Try this...

vB ACP->Plugin Manager->Plugins->Find vRewrite under "global_complete". -> Open it -> Scroll to the bottom and you should see something like str_replace('index.php',../') and remove the entire line. If you can't find it let me know.

4) FIXED - Directly clicking on a THREAD from index.php produces incorrect thread linking (traced to URL rewriting).

That is the error I am getting currently!

Minor issue I came across that I seem to have isolated to VBrewrite. I tested without VBrewrite installed and the issue is not present.

Say I have a user with userid 3 and user with a userid 33 when viewing the profile of userid 33 I get userid 3 profile.

I can post a url for a example if that would help.

Is there a way I can disable SEO'd url's for the member profiles?

Still a great mod. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Immortal

Yah, its another known issue. That already has been corrected for 1.0.1

In order to disable that, you will need to do this:

vB ACP->Plugin Manager->Find vRewrite under global_complete->Copy it to notepad or whatever->Find Replace Users, and comment it out (/* CODE */)

I have one minor issue - I have the vBa gallery, which uses native vB templates - the line "<if condition="THIS_SCRIPT != 'index'"> <base href="$vboptions[bburl]/" /> </if>" is conflicting and screwing up the data because the actual base href is not the bburl...

Is there any other place I can inject this, or a way I can exclude it or limit it to the forum. subdomain that the forum proper is on?

jlaine
03-11-2006, 09:17 PM
And now that I've spent 10 seconds thinking about it... I'll move the few hundred megs of data into my subdomain and make it work as I think it will if I put it there, there is no reason you should need to come up with work arounds to integrate with 3rd party software.

That is a lot of work Josh! You can add:
<base href="$vboptions[bburl]/" />

To the following templates, and then remove that part in headerinclude:
FORMDISPLAY, SHOWTHREAD, & STANDARD_ERROR

Ok i got it to work now.. almost. I forgott to change the .htaccess basedir

But i have some funny probs, when i turn the rewriting on:

1. Goto newest post doesnt work any more.. It always jumps back to the Forum index
2. The Link to the Forum Index above the Navbar (when u r in a Subforum) always takes back to the index site of the complete Domain.. Instead to http://www.dsa-ring.com/vbb2 it takes to http://www.dsa-ring.com

When i deactivate the SEO the URLS are still rewritten but the Errors dont occure any more..

Just installed it in my test forums...

This is a very long thread so I did not read it completly.
I was wondering if it is possible to put an old style link on every page - for debug etc at the bottom of the page.

---
Changing the timespan in forum does not work for me - it always shows 30 days

http://url/f-small-talk-31.html/page1-daysprune365-orderdesc-sortlastpost

everything after html/ seems to be ignored...

Next edit - ok just the daysprune gets ignored... order and sort is ok

Can you give me the exact steps you took to get to this link? (i.e. what you clicked, etc.)

This is a hack for having more options on getdaily
The original url is
http://URL/search.php?do=getdaily&days=7

You can than provide links for posts of last week, last month etc...

The getdaily script DOES have the day parameter but I think vBulletin is not using it out of the box - so it might be no common problem - just for those who use hacks like posts of last X days/minutes/whatever

So it is your decision wether to add this or not...

Using the feature "search this thread" does a world of good.

As I've said, before, and before, and before, it does not matter, it gets redirected to the proper URL.

zlos

I have installed and after 5 minutes uninstalled...

Reason:
1. goto=lastpost link on forumdisplay.php is not solved and redirects always to one old thread. Does not matter which link I clicked, redirect points the very same thread.
2. problem with ABCDEF links on members list.

Well done, but I cannot afford having such problems with goto=lastpost, which is one of most clicked links on my site.

vRewrite 1.5 Beta

Hello everyone, Bhuwan and I are going to release 1.5 Beta to the public, vB licensed users. If you need to post these URLs, please use http://www.techhelpforum.com/vrewrite/vRewrite_15_beta.zip

This thread is NOT for support, or bugs of vRewrite 1.5. Any bugs or support request needs to be accomplished on the bug tracker.

For people who have a habit of not searching the thread, any repeated questions for vRewrite, will be ignored from now on. I am getting sick and tired of taking the time to reply, when you cannot take a second to search the thread.

I am still learning Mantis, and I believe you need to register. I am sorry that you need to register. But, please report bugs so we can get 1.5 stable out as soon as possible :)

http://www.techhelpforum.com/vrewrite

Thanks everyone! :)

All you have to do is add the .htaccess details from DC-SEO to your own htaccess (with vRewrtie htaccess) and it should wor k fine.

That would cause duplication content penalty at google, however you inspired me the solution. To update DC-SEO .htaccess in a way so DC-SEO'ed pages are 302ed to vRewrite ones.

You know you could've warned me before I clicked that. Just read install.html thoroughly, and search the thread, and follow Ntfu's advice :)

love this plugin, but I have a small problem. When I go into a forum with it, it breaks all the relative links I had for images and the member link doesn't work because it's relatively wrong. my forum is at forum.domain.com and I have the rewrite base a /

any ideas why this breaks it?

You must have missed the step with the template edit. The headinclude template, if i am not mistaken.

1) example on 302 (too lazy to google)
2) difference between 301 vs 302
3) why isnt what is iad duplicate
4) example of duplicate

thx for your help!( I am not a SEO expert )

There are virtually no differences between 301 and 302 except that 302 is temporary and 301 is perminant. 302 also has a keyword exploit problem, so 301 is the way to go.

Yeah, I had, but I fixed that. I'm getting a really weird problem now.

On SOME of my posts, the first username link will look like this: http://forums.domain.com/u-jonathan-1.html63 instead of the regular u-username-###.html -- any ideas why this is happening? I'm having similar issues in the calendar.php with the wrong username being displayed and it's tagging on this extra ## after .html for some reason.

Additionally, the 'lastpost' isn't matching up correctly with the actual last post made. It's giving me a random post that was not the last post in the forum.

when should I expect there to be a new release? I don't want to be losing my SE rankings because I'm running a bad version or anything =/

I am very picky at this. I make sure EVERY SINGLE URL is exactly the same as every release before it. I'm a firm believer in SEO, and I make sure of it.

RC2 will probably be released this evening.

There are a few in the first post, but your best bet is just to look at a few pages in the thread and click in their signatures.

Hm, yah. I did a v3Arcade rewrite awhile ago, you may want to search the thread to find it. You would want to do basically the same thing for those two. If you still can't figure it out after that, just let me know.

For people who have a habit of not searching the thread, any repeated questions for vRewrite, will be ignored from now on. I am getting sick and tired of taking the time to reply, when you cannot take a second to search the thread.

Was reported beyond countable times.

A new feature that allows a user to write their URLs as they would want for 2.0 would be great. :)
