Hi,
The visitors of our website would VERY much like to see a chat-functionality on our website. Sorry for being a bit impatient...but I thought I'd start a poll to see how many people are waiting for this in a future version also. I think there is a very high demand for the following 2 chat-functions: 1. Integrated CHAT. - A CHAT is a room where you forum-members can logon to, so they can chat with all the other forum-members who are in the chat at that moment. The CHAT function HAS to have the ability to choose a chat-room/channel. For example....we run a website for people who suffer from a hairdisease like alopecia, chemo, trichotillomania, etc. We would like to have a chatfunction where you could choose a room/channel like 'alopecia' or 'chemo', so you can talk to people who suffer from the same disease. 2. Integrated INSTANT MESSAGING. - Not everyone uses MSNM or ICQ, not everyone wishes to give away their MSNM or ICQ profile to our members, because privacy/anonymousity is VERY important to our members. We just NEED an integrated one in VBulletin! How many times have I wished that I could instantly contact a member of our forum, when I saw that he/she was online on our VBulletin-board! Many, many, many times! We are dying for those 2 things in Vbulletin! We can't be the only one? Grover. --> PS: with an integrated chat I mean a chat where ONLY forum-members have access. I do NOT specifically mean that it has to be integrated TIGHT with VBulletin! I hope it can be provided as an add-on module (where people have to pay separately for, for instance). Please see the official www.vbulletin.com forum: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showt...threadid=35631 for the poll there. Vote there as well! (yes, I AM desperate.....that's right! ) |

i put together a jpilot chat integration you may want to use: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthrea...threadid=33093
for the instant messaging... that would require... aw geez... a lot of extra stuff. for the end user's computer to be constantly aware of instant messages while on your forums the vb forums would need to use some sort of applet that keeps in constant contact with the IM server (similar to how the jpilot chat works). i just don't think an IM feature is very plausable. |

Hi Jakeman,
I also posted the poll on vbulletin.com: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showt...threadid=35631 Nobody has voted 'NO' at vbulletin.org yet, but on vbulletin.com there are more critical notes in the messages. Although I DO think that an INSTANT MESSASING function would be GREAT....I realize that it would take a lot of work. Therefor....at least I hope that there will be some sort of CHAT function available....this gives people the ability to chat in real-time. Grover. |

The problem is, many shared servers would not allow you to run either chat or instant messaging. Both would require a heavy server load.
Thus, the price of vbulletin would be driven up to include features that many of us cannot use. Now, if vbulletin wanted to release separate chat and instant messaging scripts for a separate price that integrated with vbulletin, that would be a good thing. Amy |

Well I'm using the multicity chat hack that's not in the official releases forum but works great! It's remotely hosted so no issues with extra server load and it integrates in with my styles. Auto logs the user into the chat room. I'd post a link but my board is currently closed to guest viewing.

Well, doesn't the jPilot hack pretty much do what you want? If it hasn't got that yet, it's not hard to make it so that only registered users get access...

Konqueror,
Yeah, but JPilot is an IRC client, so it is possible for others to use another IRC client and get access to the chat-channel anyway. I'm looking for a solution that provides chat-functionality ONLY for registered members, with IRC you have many backdoors. If there's a solution to prevent non-registered visitors visiting an IRC-channel, then it would indeed be something to look forward to. Grover. |
