Installed/not installed
Hi guys,
Just had a thought as I was flickin round your forum, and something struck me.. No not the mouse, keyboard, or the missus tryin to get my ass of the computer (although thats a normal thing)... I like your installed/not installed thing as it givesme an area where I can see what I have and have not installed, as sometimes tryin to remember what is an original part of vb is not as easy as ya think LOL Anyways, I uninstall if I remove the hack, which is great as it shows me how many hacks I have, and coders how many people have installed there hack. Now for the question...... We have an upgrade to VB meaning all hacks need to be re-writen, but if people uninstall then the coders don`t get an acurate look at how popular the hack is, and may not convert a hack due to thinking it`s not very popular... So how`s about an upgrade button, that resets all hacks to unistall user-side, but shows the coder previously installed before upgrade.. This way what was thought of as unpopular hacks may be seen as more popular and therefore encourage people to re-create.. Will save on requests, and should in effect mean priority on hack releasing for coders who produce lots of hacks can be acheived Thoughts anyone? |

I don't think that would be a fair and accurate account at all. If a hack is popular for one version, and you used it, why would you click uninstall if you went to an upgraded version? The authors work hard to make the hacks here and the install button is a nice way to say thanks for that. By clicking uninstall you take a way the thanks that you gave them while using their hack until you no longer need it? Where is the sense in that?

Bob, that's what he just said
He wants it to still show as installed for the number of people who have it installed stats. But NOT show it on his profile page as an installed hack. |

I still don't think it's right for someone to click un-install when they are done with the hack and are upgrading. He said he un-installs the hack and clicks un-install when he upgrades. That's what I was referring to, Amy.

I actually agree with you myself Boofo .. I would love to keep the install switch on, if not for the fact that when I click on the button to find al installed hacks, it bringing up things I no longer have installed ....
Ya see to me this is Thanks Vs Usefullness. Untill you just mentioned it, I saw the install button as one a usefull tool for myself to use, as I can see which ones I`ve already looked at and installed.. And two, a usefull tool for the coders to see who and more to the point, how many users are using there hack. At the end of the day this is a forum, I would rather say thankyou for a hack within a thread, than click an automated button (just a personal opinion). But the point is, regardless of which you use it for, whether be for thanks, for usefullness, or just for the hell of it, the addition I suggested is only an idea for an addition to this. At the end of the day you are saying that I should not click uninstall because it means I`m removing the thankyou, however this is not what it says, it says uninstall, and this is what I took it as being. If I am wrong in this I appologise. EDIT:- I have done a couple of searches, literally only a couple, to see if I can see a thread that states what the install/uninstall button is for, and cannot see one.. I therefore thought it may be in the FAQ .. not there ... It`s only reasonable to assume I am not the only member who thinks that the hack is to show yourself and the coder, what is and isn`t installed. Don`t get me wrong, the hack is excellent as is the forum, just I feel it is portraid (spelt very wrongly I know LOL) in the wrong way. I would have no way of knowing that this is a 'thankyou' type hack. I honestly thought it was more a tool, for both coder and user. Just for the record, I have not yet had the need to click uninstall due to a major upgrade as of yet, as I was not a member during vb2, was mearly stating what I would personally do. |

I guess sometimes I come across a little rough, but when it comes to the org here, I get a little excited about certain things. My apologies if it was mis-interpreted. |
