ive recently added some hacks to my board but somewhere along the line an error has sprung up in memberlist.php.

Code:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected $ in /home/xxxxxx/public_html/forum/memberlist.php on line 906

line 906 in this case is the ?> which is at the end of every vbulletin file.

rather than just take it all apart again - can anyone give me any ideas of what i can do to fix it myself?

That usually happens when you don't have the right # of {}s for your IFs and what not. In my experience anyway.

If you have an editor that highlights each pair of {} (upon clicking on one of them) you can find out pretty easy if that is the problem.
