good looking graphics

I am using photoshop right now to create buttons for my forum. however, andy time i try to create one it becomes either very fuzzy or very pixelated. I am looking at buttons for instance that are on this site that seem to be very smooth.

I have tried using different resolutions, to no avail. can someone give me an idea as to how i need to create these images so they are smooth and not as jaggedy or fuzzy.
