Alternating rows rather than columns

Is it possible to get rows to alternate colors in the forum display rather than having columns alternate?

I found a hack that does this in forumhome_level2_post, but it doesn't carry through the forum display.

I've searched all the sister sites but I didn't find anything for vb3.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
