Is phpinclude_start obsolete?
Is there any good or necessary reason to put code in phpinclude_start instead of making a global_start (or other) plug-in?

By using phpinclude_start you avoid a call to unserialize();.
Honestly for my own forum I would use phpinclude_start, if I where releasing something to the community i'd use the plug-in system because it makes it easier on the end user to install. |

phpinclude_start is style specific, global_start is really global.
so none of them is obsolete. it just depends on what code you want to add there. there might be code which is just usefull for one style, so that belongs to phpinclude |

phpinclude_x is deprecated and is subject to be removed in future versions.
