I've noticed some vBulletin powered sites have blocked users with the web accelerator enabled and are giving a message with instructions to turn of the GWA in order to access the forums. e.g whackbag.com displays this message

Reasons you may encounter this page:
(1) You are using a proxy. proxys are not permitted to access this server.
(2) You are using a toolbar that changes your IP address. If you are using google's web accelerator , Please turn it off for access to wackbag.
(3) You may have been banned by one of the staff.

Does anyone know how they've done that?

I can't wait to see the code to block that toolbar.

This is useless hits to our sites and just plain internet pollution.

There is a proxy script here that will keep users with proxys out

try contacting google at labs+webaccelerator@google.com, they can answer your question about this. you can probably block the cache bot or request it not to web accelerate the site/page. their faq doesnt answer this except about increased server load if pages are cacheable
