Ok, I have searched and read. Answers have been to vague. People are trying to ask the question, while being polite, but not getting an answer because they are...just..too...nice..and not getting their point across.
Here goes.
We Just dished out some cash for alot of vB Lic. Its a gameing site. What we NEED to do is password protect the forums for particular clans. Usergroups are "cute" but noone but myself and 1 other person will have Admin access. Ever. As far as I know, the only way to do this is to add users to users groups as they join...etc.
That sucks and is not efficient. My questions:
HOW do you set up PW for Individual Forums.
Why do I not see this option (maybe im missing it)
When a User clicks a "Private" link. A PW window needs to pop up and ask for Login and PW. If correct then they proceed. If incorrect they dont procees. Simple. Where is this feature? Where is this Hack? Everyone wants to know. Please post HOW to and not say "Oh i have answered this 2 times in 1 week..etc etc and make ppl search for ****" I want an answer. A link to a hack, a link to some post on HOW TO PW PROTECT FORUMS in vB! .. Anything like that will be Acceptable. Please no BS "i am god admin and wont answer" **** answers. Its a Simple questin and requires a simple answer and i KNOW there is one out there. (but i sure as hell am missin it)

The answer to how to password protect a forum is simple. You DON'T.
This means it is not built into the system and has never been advertised as a feature. You will have to hack this capability into your forums if you wish to use it.
I know this was a feature of UBB but that is a different product by a different company. Jelsoft had decided that this was not a feature they were going to provide. It may become a feature in the future but I don't know for sure.
However you want to password protect your forums you can add a field called "Password" to the forum table and check it along with Usergroup Access. I think it would take all of 30 minutes to put it in place properly using templates and vBulletin's security.

Ok . As far as the UBB thing... well UBB sucks and i never even mentioned it. Sitting and making groups for , literally , thousands and thousands of users
, basically sucks. I guess im going to have to search out some mad scriptor to add this feature. Babysitting usergroups , like i said, is "cute" but definitly Unacceptable!
Indipendant forums are for those specific users and who they wish to "see" certain things is up to them. They should be able to pick a password/login once and thats it. The company/site running the boards should have not to oversee everyones usergroup. I know you you moderators and programers understand where im comin from so no need to reply =)
To have a password protected forum is a good feature but after using UBB for 2 years I realized usergroups are much more efficient. Password can be easily said to others but a member can't become a usergroup member if not added by admin. That's more secure, I think.
Usergroup system has been improved in vB 2.0 so adding and creating usergroups will become much more easier. Correct me if wrong.
Add usergroups for each combination of forumaccess you may have.
Unauthorize any Forum the Usergroup shouldn't have access to (the Forum will be invisible to the Users of this group). If the User tries to get into the forum (ie by trying different links (if there is a forum # 20 there should be one # 16) he will be prompted for Username and Password.
that is how I currently run the same thing however, its very time consuming and gets out of hand with as few as 4 or 5 clans. If one clan wants to change moderators you have to add about 8 indicidual forum permissions. This gets to be a very annoying task.
I like the groups design. I'm just looking for an easier way to do this. Maybe assign a forum as "owned" by a group? Then only allow those group members permission instead of the other way around.
Harmo i work on something like this cause i need exactly the same thing you need cause i run barly the same type of board
but i need to give access to the full cp to only one person and give some permision to Clan owner so their can set their own mod change some option in their forum but not the global one anyway if i found something i get back to you
