Duplicate Link Checker

I run a pretty active forum where users like to post links to one news article or another they find on the web. Posts scroll so fast I generally wind up with anywhere from 2-5 topics on the same subject. I'd like to make up a small application where a user could type in a link and see if its been posted in another post. URLs are not currently search indexed, but I could probably write a new DB for URLs to go into.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried something like this out, or if you feel its just not possible.

instead of reinventing the wheel why not try velocd's existing topics check, it searches for existing topics based on the thread's title. this prevents double threads about an already existing topic

I use that hack as is.

The link thing would be beneficial imo.
