strange problem, number of users 0

I am having a strange problem with the chat.

When I click on the chat, it opens the chat window and I see number of users is 1, then a moment later, it goes to zero, and there are no users listed on the left hand side.

I have done the edits several times and double checked them. Any thoughts on what might be causing this.
