Default Publish Date when editing Article

The default Publish Date when I go to edit an article is 1 Jan 2004? Sowhen I save it will change the date to that date. So I have to makesure to change the date to the old publish date.

Can this date just be the current publish date so it won't change unless you make a change?

Thanks
