Private messages should be private, that's my opinion.

And I respect your opinion, Kirby - but there are times when it may be necessary to read them.

Harassing, threatening or unwanted PMs are some of those times. Spam PMs are another. A copy/paste is not a reliable indicator, since the results can be modified. Forwarding PMs is similarly suspect.

I've had this ability with numerous non-vB packages and have rarely used it, but when I have to, the ability is very welcome.

In an ideal world, privacy is paramount. In this day and age of wackos on the Internet, I prefer to think of PMs as Personal Messages and not Private Messages.

As for Thug's question, the URL is typically vB truncated. Can you try again so we can tell exactly which hack you're using? I believe there are a couple - I'll go search.

Hmm, for such things like spam, users threatening other users etc. one could create a "Report PM" feature, which would take the message from the database (together with a note from the person reporting the PM).
This way it could be made sure that the message is authentic.

Now I like that idea.

As it is, on my sites we have a disclaimer stating that, at the admin's sole discretion, PMs may be accessed by the admin. Fortunately, we've never had an issue with my ability to do this. Of course, I would never go browsing member PMs without cause - I believe my members know this.

Then again, on most forums, members think that the admins can do anything anyway....... so maybe they just expect that PMs aren't fully private.

Some members will believe you, while others won't. There will always be those who will think that the soul with the admin title cannot be trusted.

Unfortunately it appears I can't. I could only locate the mod you evidently used; I looked for the second one I thought existed, but to no avail. Maybe someone else can help here?
