what is firstpostid used for?

I dont know if this is the right forum, if not then I hope someone will move it.
I'm trying adding threads and posts direct from my website into the forum, but I cant see anything logic in "firstpostid" in the thread table.

What is this used for?

The postid of the first post in the thread easy right?

I think this is used to structure the thread, so one knows where to start (if using that funny thread layout)

it also used in grabbing a thread's beginning post, you know that highlight you get when you put your cursor over a thread link is actually a snippet from the first post
