Sort memberlist by custom fields

Is there a way to sort the memberlist by a custom profile field? I presume it would involve modifying memberlist.php a little.

At the moment, I can sort by username, join date and posts. I'd like to have an option to be able to sort by a custom field so that all members who have something in that custom field are shown first.
