The only time at which vBulletin uses excessive resources is when people install monster hacks on them that perform over 100 queries per page..
I haven't heard any such problems with vB3 though. |

is your host one of those who puts 50 or more accounts on a celeron box like those that advertise at webhostingtalk.com?
i personally have always wanted to run tests and put about 25 forum installs on a single box with about 100 folks per forums using it to see what kind of load there is on the box.. but i only have a single license and can't do that.. either way, i don't believe your host is dealing with people who know how to manage their forums if this is the case.. or they have too many accounts on a single box.. |

Ventures Online is one of the more reputable hosts out there. They didn't outright ban Vbulletin like they did hivemail, but they did try to force me to upgrade to a dedicated or virtual private server shortly after I upgraded to VB3. My traffic levels didn't change - only the version of vbulletin that I was using. I know I wasn't the only one who had this problem.

Many of the clients on my servers run vBulletin and I don't have any complaints. Some hosts will just look for reasons to complain.

my mate that runs a host complains that vb3 uses more resources than vb2... but it's never become much of a problem...
I'd say ditch the host and find a new one...their loss... |

I believe that any community software is going to take more resources than your average html website or even the average PHP/MySQL website. Why they choose to point vB out I have no clue.
The host I'm with (HostRocket) used to say that if you had more than 30 people on at a time posting and other stuff to your board you might be useing to many resources. That statement was said during vB2. I have asked about vB3 and they said they had no clue about what to say since they installed MySQL 4 with query chaching and the fact that vBulletin 3 uses less querys. The most we have ever had on with vBulletin 3 is 42 and they have yet to complain. |

I've had 120+ on a vB site that's on one of my servers that also hosts other vB sites (including an extensively hacked and extended vB2 site). The server didn't even breathe hard.
