Dynamic reputation
This hack isn't done yet, but I would like suggestions and/or see if someone else (besides me) is interested in it.
Reputation is something that can or cannot be used. When it is used it can effectively show which users had a better behaviour in the forum because they will be voted. There is just a little problem: users don't vote. They only vote when asked (if this post helped you, please give me reputation!!) and I hate to see that in a signature or in every user's posts. Even when you can vote you forget to, then reputation becomes pretty much stalled. In my forum users want to post, not to vote. That's also the reason for thread's rating not to be very popular. I have started implementing some "dynamic reputation" system. But I would like to have more rules and to have rules that make sense. Here is what I have that makes a reputation a number that really changes and that stills shows the user "reputation" When a user replies to anothers user's post the user that is being replied gets reputation. Why? Because if someone has taken the time to reply to my post that might be a good post so reputation is given to me. When a user writes a very small post (like 30 characters or so) he looses reputation. I am sorry but I don't consider that a post worth of the forum. While some posts would only require two words the majority of them need more than that. Whe a user starts a thread he gains extra reputation. Why? Because new threads are sometimes more important than a single thread with 100 pages. When a user receives a pm he gains reputation? And that's mostly the same as the "replying to me" reason. I want to know if someone is interested and to come up with more rules for this. The objective is that the reputation somehow reflects the popularity of the user in the forum, but in a self-managed way, instead of relying on votes. |

I don't understand how nobody is interested in this one... well. Some ideas make it to a hack... some doesn't.
(ah yes, that was to bump the thread, it's the thread's second and last chance) |

kentaurus: I think it's a great idea, and would back your going ahead with it ...
I'd be interested to see an AdminCP section which has a number of actions on the forum which can increase / decrese reputation, and for that to be customisable to the nth degree - aka turn on and off "reputation triggers" and adjust the volume of the effect that it has on a user ... even to the extent that you can specify that on a certain day (a birthday for instance) a person gets extra reputation from the normal set of actions ... aka a multiplier on special days, and maybe a "user of the day" (on my forum it's spammer of the day ) can also be gaining extra reputation by staying in that position ... I think this could be fun to have...
Especially the birthday-give-points-thing But I personally don't think I want to have the post a post and post a thread option on, that could just led to folks just spamming to get more points... a CP where you could turn each setting on/off would of course be great! Hm, perhaps (if possible) one could have the option to give rep points (level) if one resolves a Help Desk ticket (HelpDesk) (if installed),... As a thanks for helping... ? |

Some thoughts....
I can see the PMs being abused for upping reputations. Plus, PMs add nothing to drive traffic to the site, which is what's rewarding in having posting members. It rewards the wrong group, for doing nothing but to chit chat with friends on your dime. Thread creation rep points is a very good idea. That's an incentive for folks to post new threads. But yes, add that the point is lost if it's under 30 characters. Need to prevent exploiters from racking up points they didn't really deserve.. Would be nice if the point system was geared to word count (with Admin moderation, because of cut and paste jobs). Longer posts of, say 500 words, should gain more points, than a "me too" reply of 10. That would really reward your forum seeders, and make them the justified stars of the forum. Chris |
