on the old layout can you get it to display which ones you've installed as it does on the new layout?

noppe, as this would mean a greater hack of search.php which we don't want to do

(at least not before final vb3)

Yeah, not yet. The current method of doing it is not perfect, but it's a quick way of doing it.
