I was interested in this hack but I've got a question.

It tells me to:

Create a new profile field and obtain the field ID (for example: field18).
-- I suggest making this field nonviewable and noneditable by users

How would I do that?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In your Admin CP, under custom user profile field.
