Is there a hack to make thread/forum icons "turn off"

i recently upgraded from phpbb. one thing i liked about it was that after you read a thread, the indicator saying there was a new post would turn off. i've noticed in vb, you have to mark all forums read to accomplish this. is there a hack that makes vb act like phpbb in this regard?

Just create your own, replace off.gif with one that's transparent.
