News headlines on index page...

Hi!

I'd like to place a vertical column containing updated news headlines (linking to news articles on various sites) on the main index page. It seems to be several possibilities for such a thing, however comments on which would be the best and easiest to implement would be appreciated - I'm not looking for a portal type frontpage, just the news bit...

Maybe this could be accomplished using vB portal etc. - the main concern is that I only want the news column; other than that the index page should look as it normally would.

Please advise...
