how do you make your register button disappear when logged in, for your header?

what i want to do is when a user is logged in, the register button disappears and is replaced with the user cp button inplace of that, and when they logoff it is switched back to the register button, any ideas... i remember doing this hack a long time ago, but i cannot find it anymore..
