It adds one query to forumhome.

I don't know how to make the most popular smilie appear, as I'm not even sure if it's possible to search through posts counting how many times each smilie is used, etc. etc.

It would be far too intensive to do the same for smilies though, even if it is possible.

It does it automatically, based on how many users are using the avatar.

you could make a table that stores the info and have it update it on a preset time, like once an hour.

The problem with storing the information in a separate table, is:

1. Another table is added
2. There will still be one query required, to retrieve the data from the table
3. Somewhere, an update must be run, albeit even if it is automatic, some form of query will be run then...
