I just upgraded my testboard (heavily hacked as it's a direct copy of the *live* board) from 2.2.8 to 2.3.0 and IT WORKED!!!. Yay! I'm sure I'll have a few hacks missing here and there as this is the first time I've attempted a manual upgrade, but so far things are working good. *hugs araxis merge*
*lol* It didn't take so long. Most of the morning - I'd say a couple hours. I can't believe just how easy Araxis made it. I mean ... I've heard about it, but sheesh! This was super easy. Like I said, I'm sure I'll have to go back in and fix a few hacks that I may have overwritten, but for the most part ... yay!
You get better using Araxis as you upgrade with it again and again. When I first started, took me 2 hours. Then I had to reapply some hacks. Now, just under an hour. Just remember to reapply templates for certain hacks like the Country Hack, the Away hack, (basically any hack that automatically installs templates into the default category, which gets overwritten if not modified).
LoL, I usually just overwrite the files on my test board every so often, erasing all the hacks, then i start hacking a clean board.

Firsttime Manual Upgrade - Success!
Just remember to reapply templates for certain hacks like the Country Hack, the Away hack, (basically any hack that automatically installs templates into the default category, which gets overwritten if not modified).
