HACK: Additional emphasis method for posts (_word_ becomes italic word)
BY: KuraFire [www.kurafire.com]
DESCRIPTION: If users use _underscores_ to emphasize words (old skool italic), it will make those words italic in posts
DIFFICULTY: Easy
INSTALL-TIME: 20 seconds
STEPS: 1
EXTENDED DESCRIPTION:
I know plenty of people (myself included) who use _underscores_ when they emphasize words. This is mostly with people who use IRC a lot, which lacks italic words, so people use _these_ to emphasize instead. And sicne _underscores_ are a lot faster than typing blabla or using the button (if you speedtype, going to your mouse is just sooooo slow ^_^), I figured people might want to have this on their board as well.
It will parse words with lowercase, uppercase, numbers and/or - or _ inside them. However, it won't take multiple words at once (ie. no spaces in-between) for then you couldn't use a normal _ without causing the rest of the text to become italicized. (not that I can really see people put a random underscore in a sentence, but still...)
No, but don't you have any people on your board? They might type fast and enjoy it. And it's not like adding 1 single line of code (that's all!) is gonna be a big problem for when you upgrade to vB 3, now is it?
Originally posted by xiphoid I personally have never seen users use this and complain it won't go italic
;D
But a nice addition though :>
That's cos nobody is used to this ever becoming italic, since no program or anything still uses _this_ method, but a lot of people _do_ use it
Personally, I do it incredibly much, but I never realized that with a small regex I could make it go italic (the way it used to) on my board, so when I did I made the hack ^_^
nice hack - I don't see why you guys insist on posting comments about a hack in a negative manner - hey , if you don't want to use it , or find it's not useful for you , how about just continuing on to the next hack to see if it fits your needs instead of posting needless , worthless comments ? It would make these forums a much nicer place to visit and seem less filled with egotistical asses.
