New Message Icon????

When a member posts a topic, the new message icon changes from a blue v to a yellow v (on the main forum index). I click on the forum, then i see a yellow envolope (Stating a new post) so i click on the post, read the message and then click back to the forum where the message is in. The envolope is now grey/blue in colour, stating i've read the message.

I then click onto the main forum (index.php) and the forum v is still yellow (which indicated a new topic), i click on the forum where the new topic is and there is no new topic. Is it possible to make the yellow v change to the normal v (No new posts). This is doing my head in as i don't know when new posts are being made.
