Looking for thread title display hack...

I've seen this only in a couple of other forum apps, but this is something which we really want to integrate into our vB system.

I've attached a couple of screenshots of an OpenSource forum software (which I'm obviously not going to advertise here), to demonstrate what I'm trying to achieve.

"forum-thread-list-flat.gif" Is the default view of forum thread listing's we're all used to with vB. Sorted by the date & time of the last post that was added to each thread.

"forum-thread-list-nested.gif" is the other view which we are trying to integrate into our site. This view is sorted by the date & time of the first post in the thread.

Is there a hack that allows this to be done? And which of the views being used is a choice made by the user in his CP (but obviously with a default admin setting for guest/default)?

So you simply want threaded view posts? I'm pretty sure that I heard that vB3 was going to offer the option. In the meantime, I don't believe that I've ever seen a hack with that capability. If you know your way around PHP perhaps you could read up on how its done and try to integrate it into the vb system yourself

I read that vB3's going to offer this, but I don't really wanna get this all tweaked and have to hack things all over again.

Yeah, I know some PHP, but with my present lack of knowledge of vB's inner workings, I'd do more harm than good attempting something as big as this, lol.

This has been requested before and I can't see anyone writing this for vB2, not that all thread prior to hacking this in / upgrading to vB3 won't appear threaded anyway.

Okies, well, basically... apparently vB3 won't have a nested thread display like this. The "nested threads" that I've seen thrown around on vBcom is apparently about nesting the posts within threads, and not about nesting post topics in the thread list.

So, I decided to work on this hack myself.

I've attached a screeny so y'all can take a peek so far.

I've got the threaded views sorted out, now I've just gotta hack the user thingemy to give them this choice, and the forumdisplay.php file to actually understand the setting and determine what to display.

A few more bits too, but it's getting there
