does anyone know how to increase the # of posts and threads displayed on the home page

i don't see why you want to increas the post/thread count, but in your index.php you'll find this:

$countposts=$DB_site->query_first('SELECT COUNT(*) AS posts FROM post');
$totalposts=number_format($countposts['posts']);

$countthreads=$DB_site->query_first('SELECT COUNT(*) AS threads FROM thread');
$totalthreads=number_format($countthreads['threads']); 


replace it with something like this:
