You mean the administrator doesn't choose? I thought that in order for a threaded option to be available, a 'reply to thread' option could not exist, but instead have 'reply to post' options (like as in UBB.threads).
I'm pretty sure there is an option for the administrator to disable threaded views altogether, but the idea, as it has been presented to me, is that the users can switch the format in which they view the thread as they please (probably by providing a link on the thread page).
As to your question I don't have an official answer. Personally I see two ways of handling the problem: One, that any answer that isn't specifically an answer to other posts in the thread is regarded as an answer to the first post in that particular thread, OR (two), that any answer that isn't specifically is an answer to other posts in the thread is regarded as an answer to the last post in the thread.
The Admin will choose the default view for the board (linear or threaded.) The users will then be able to choose their default view. They will also be able to easily switch back and forth between views by clicking on the appropriate button.

That's how it will work, there will no longer be a big reply button, but instead reply buttons for each post.

Thats one of the reasons, why I think vb is better than ubb.threads. My members will be very confused by this "feature". It would be much better, if the admin could turn off this feature for all.
Im seriously looking forward to VB3, Id really like {as would most of the vbulletin community} to know a few details about it, is there any details been released so far?
