Is it possible for guests to use cookies to record which threads they have read?

I've altered a couple of lines in the sessions.php file:-

$bbuserinfo['cookieuser']=1;
$bbuserinfo['nosessionhash']=1;

This creates a cookie for the guest, but when they return all threads are still marked as containing new posts
