My host allows subdomains, but what's their advantage?
I've seen some sites using http://forums/mysite.com but why is this any better than http://www.mysite.com/forums? Darren. |

Well...
forums.mysite.com is really mysite.com/forums, but usually, things that are / something are an addition to the main site, whereas as something.mysite.com tends to be notified as a Linked site, but it isnt an addition to the site as a whole, just a sideproject, which supports itself rather than relying on the site... Its all psychological... Satan |

there is no real need to use them, but it depends on you if you like them or not
![]() but sometimes it is usefull: lets say you are member of a clan, and a subdomain of the clansite links to your homepage which does not need to be on the same server |

whatever.domain.tld is in essence the exact same thing as www.domain.tld. In many cases it's just an alias to some part of the 'mother' site, in other cases it's on a server on the other side of the planet. Personally, I have a few development sited on subdomain, where I mirror the main domain to get a test platform that has the exact same setup as where stuff will run in the end. I also have subdomains where friends of me that are on cable with static IP's have their webpages. I merely point the said subdomain to their computer, etc... Enough ranting. Most likely noone understood squat of what I just said, but I'll press the submit button anyways... |
