SMS to a Phone?
I know I can't be the only one in the world that uses SMS. I heard that there are now over 10 million SMSs sent daily.
My question is: Is there a Hack for send a PM as a SMS? Can you have "SMS notification" instead of "Email Notification" I've noticed that some sites have a link at the bottom of a user's post that has the ability to "instant message" them to AOL, Yahoo,ICQ....where's MSN? Thanks for any comments. |

This could be accomplished in many different ways. One is to have an email->SMS gateway, and just send mails there. I know this is offered from several operators. Another way could be to get a deal with someone to use their SMS gateway and let them put ads in it.
In norway pricing starts at around 20 messages/USD, depending on what model and how many messages you send per month. You might have to pay a monthly fee, etc, etc. SMS is still insanly expensive considering the costs the operators have, but enough ranting... |

Why be concerned with SMS.. i believe every single text capable mobile phone has its own email address (##########@mobile.yourservice.com)... could you create a PRIVATE area of the user profile which asks for their mobile email address, then add an option to outgoing PMs where the sender could choose to send the PM to the mobile unit also, provided that the receiver has entered mobile information. Make sense?

The problem with a hack like this is not actually getting the message to a phone, but getting a gateway that works for users in as many places as possible. |

this would be a great idea, i think sms's in return for advertising is pretty cheap, and you could even charge extra kinda like the footy results where you get charged 25p per txt, not that much tho' i reckon like 15-20p per txt which wouldn't be to bad, but all in all it's a great service, especially for places like the uk were the service is so highly used

This is a great idea. You can even set up your own SMS gateway server if you want. Let me dig up the links I have here and I'll post them.
Problem with SMS on a global basis is the lock-down of international SMS messages. For instance, I've tried to send SMS messages to my friends in Australia (I'm in the US) and I can't do it. Reason? Australian mobile-phone companies shut down the ability to transmit international SMS messages because of the spam users were receiving from international locations. While they can control their own country from doing this, I guess they had a hard time with outside countries. See an example of this here. Anyway, there are various pay-for-service gateways that will allow you to send international SMS, but, you do have to pay. Check out THIS site for example. I also noticed that we are spoiled here in the USA with plentiful services. For instance, my friends in Australia do not have the ability to receive SMS via an email address. The service providers (Telstra at least) do not provide them with this feature. My phone, via Verizon Wireless, has its own email addy. So, when people send mail to that address (@vtext.com) the Verizon SMS gateway will convert that to SMS and deliver it to me. Hope this helps. |
