Does anyone have the definitive word on whether the XP Icons can be used on vB forums like ours?

Sinecure must have set off a revolution, because I'm seeing them everywhere now. I've started to develop my own set, which are closely inspired from the icons on the MSDN site -- but I do respect property law -- especially intellectual propery.

So does anyone know if the rumor is true -- that Microsoft has licensed their icons for use on web sites or has released them into the public domain?
