Is there any way to confirm that the e-mail address that someone uses to register is valid? If the e-mail addy is invalid it should not allow registration to be completed.

this is a vBull standard feature - activation code required
under CP ? User and registration options ? Verify Email address in registration ? set it to YES you can install Bira's Random Password Instead of Activation Code hack instead |

I know that part of registration, but I was talking about something else. What I meant was a way to verify the e-mail before it was ever sent out to the person. If you look at glocksoft you will see what I mean. It would verify the e-mail address and if the e-mail address is invalid it would say that the registration process was incomplete due to an invalid e-mail address and then take them back to the registration page. I don't even know if this is possible to be honest, but I would use this process instead of having the person going to their e-mail and verifying that the address is correct by clicking on a link.

e-mail address is already verified in vBulletin (a simple check for real e-mail format).
I do know of another check, that tries to actually e-mail that address (by connections to the sockets), but it doesn't always work (sometimes the e-mail is really there but you can't get to it). |

ya, there is no email verification. If someone registers with an addy like xxx@xyz.com and all the world knows its bogus, they are still considered a member of the forums. Awaiting email activation..... forever. Technically, they should not be a member, but a guest awaiting email activation.
It would be cool if someone could make a hack to have "members" awaiting email activation accounts expire after a set time if they do not confirm. Having to manually remove all of these is a pain in the rear. |

If this is supposed to be completely automatical, you must use a cron job. However, most webhosters in Germany don't offer these on normal webspace( including mine), so I cannot offer this one.
I have no problem in searching for unconfirmed members with less than 1 post an a registration date of 10 days before today, in order to prune them. But I think a modification verifying at least the synthay of the email addresses would be useful. |
