Default GoDaddy Warning / Rant

I'd just like to give GoDaddy a big fat thumbs down on service and support.

I've had all my services with Siteground for 2 years now on Sept 10th. My domain was with GoDaddy. The domain name expires on Sept 10th and I've been getting two to three spam mails a day from GoDaddy to renew my services. I just ignored them because I had planned on transferring my domain to Siteground. Yesterday morning at around 5AM, my site just goes down for no aparent reason. I get siteground on the horn and they say, the problem is with GoDaddy and the name resolution.

I get GoDaddy on the chat. Here's how that went.
Them:Your domain is active but not configured at all.
Me: Why?
Them: You never configured it.
Me:It's been configured and working for almost two years.
Them: That domain is up for renewal, would you like to take care of that now?
Me: No, I just want to get it working again.
Them: Do this....blahblahblah.
Me: Ok it's configured, how long for propagation?
Them: Oh, usually around 30 to 45 minutes but can take up to 48 hours.
Me: Ok, thanks. I'll be transferring my domain.
Them: Make sure you fill out the survey.

Alright, that was 8:30 yesterday morning. I know it's only been 36 hours and they said it could be 48 but still no name resolution. At 9:00 AM yesterday morning I had the bright idea to use my shortened mobile URL to go directly to the IP/directory with a redirect for a quick fix so the guys could at least access the site. Siteground domain, fully propagated in 25 minutes and the site was accessible again. I had to change the base url to the IP instead of the name to get it to work using the tools.php. No big deal.

After all this, I think GoDaddy has the worst customer service and actual services I've ever had to deal with. Their domain management interface sucks too. I had originally bought the domain there fully intending to get my hosting there also, but after doing some research on the Linux plans they offered, I found it lacking the necessary requirement for VB5 at the time. I'm glad I didn't get stuck with them for hosting services. I still haven't found out why my domain name quit working. It's almost like they threw a monkey wrench into my operation to force me to go to support so they could ask if I would renew. I don't know that for a fact but it sure does seem that way.

That being said, I can't recommend GoDaddy to anyone for anything. Hopefully, this rant will be of use to someone who is considering GoDaddy.

Wow, I have over 50 domains with godaddy and never had an issue. Their hosting is not so great but for hosting domains I have always thought they were the best with easy transfers, etc. I never had an issue with a domain and have only contacted them for other services through live chat.

Hope you get everything sorted.

:erm: If you don't get this straightened out Mr! You are interrupting my daily browsing routine!

Seriously, I'm surprised Godaddy isn't making you bid on your expired domain in their auction block!

Use k5bp.com resolves to the ip. I'm not going to worry about the other one until it is transferred on the 28th.

Their transfers are too easy. Someone hacked my email and transfered/stole my domains away from godaddy within an hour (just reset my password with godaddy and away they went!). And then I went through two months of sh*t to try to get my domains back (but I didn't transfer them back to godaddy!).

Godaddy is the one and only host where I've had a site hacked. And that was one that ran on another provider for 5 years before going with godaddy. The attacker hit every site that was on a shared host there. So I wasn't the only one involved.

I've since changed to using my own servers and I've haven't had a site hacked yet.

Yea that's also a reason why I never use shared hosting. I've also never been a fan of GoDaddy.

Not that I'm a fan of godaddy, but things like this are often an isolated issue based on the representative.

To me, it sounds like the guy was using canned messages and had no interest in actually helping you.

The security has increased as far as passwords go and you need to verify browsers so even if someone has your password now they will not get in.

The ease of transfers was really only godaddy to godaddy or at ;least that is what I have used mostly. If someone using another godaddy account to steal your domain you probably could have found out who did it though I am not sure if would have done any good.

I highly doubt that was a hosting issue.

Granted I do not use their hosting but many of my clients due. I think it is more restrictive then too open though. Chances are if you hot hacked it was due to a vulnerability with your site and not due to the hosting.
