Why are moderators and advisors demoted? I noticed that some staff members were demoted.

I would say the vast majority of the time it is voluntary. If a person is serving as staff, and changes in their life make it so that they can no longer fulfill the duties to which they have agreed, then it is best for that person to voluntarily step down.

This way the site owners can take steps, if necessary, to fill the vacancy or otherwise make sure things are not left undone.

As Mark said, it is usually voluntary. Sometimes they find life to require more of their time and they just don't have as much time to spend here helping people.
